A former 49ers player issues a caution regarding the Browns acquiring Brandon Aiyuk.

Part of the Cleveland Browns reportedly having “negotiated the framework” of a trade with the San Francisco 49ers for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk involves Cleveland possibly sending San Francisco a package that includes fellow receiver Amari Cooper.

On the latest edition of his podcast, former 49ers star cornerback Richard Sherman explained why he isn’t a fan of such a deal for the NFC West club.

He fits in some ways into [49ers coach Kyle] Shanahan’s offense, but in other ways, he doesn’t, Sherman said about Cooper, as shared by Tristi Rodriguez of NBC Sports Bay Area. Brandon Aiyuk blocks his butt off every single play. You’ve seen viral clips of him blocking 60, 70 yards down the field against the Pittsburgh Steelers and in numerous other games. And that’s just the culture in San Francisco. That’s something Amari Cooper would have to adjust to. No offense to him, but I don’t ever remember seeing a clip of Amari Cooper blocking 60 yards down the field.

Sherman may have little to worry about regarding the 49ers possibly replacing Aiyuk with Cooper. It was reported on Wednesday that individuals within the New England Patriots believe that Aiyuk’s “preference” is to end up with the Steelers, and Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk later wrote that the most likely outcome to this saga is that Aiyuk either gets traded to Pittsburgh or signs a long-term contract extension with the 49ers.

Aiyuk is in the final year of his rookie deal and reportedly wants to become one of the highest-paid players at the position.

While ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on Wednesday that the 49ers “are not in a rush to make a move” regarding Aiyuk’s future as they eye a second-straight trip to the Super Bowl, it appears the previously mentioned Shanahan is just about done with any drama related to the situation. Sherman suggested Shanahan isn’t the only person associated with the 49ers feeling that way heading into the second weekend of August.

It’s just one of those situations where I don’t think anybody feels great about it right now, Sherman added. I think [Aiyuk] should be in San Francisco. I think both sides would feel better if he was in San Francisco. It just doesn’t seem like it’s going to work out that way.

As long as San Francisco possesses Aiyuk’s rights, there remains even a small chance that the two sides could come to an agreement for the 26-year-old to feature for the club through at least Super Bowl LIX.
