Alex Ovechkin Can Beat Wayne Gretzky’s Goal Record in 2024-25???

It has been debated about whether Ovechkin can reach this milestone during this upcoming 2024-25 season.

The Washington Capitals’ 2024–25 season is jam-packed with several topics. The entire hockey world is watching captain Alex Ovechkin try to surpass Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most goals ever scored. Gretzky scored 894 goals in 1,487 games to cap off an incredible career. Ovechkin has scored 853 goals in 1,426 games as of right now. He needs 42 more goals to take the record for most goals ever scored.

Whether Ovechkin can accomplish this feat in the next 2024–25 season has been discussed. Though it might not occur until the 2025–2026 season (Ovechkin’s final season under his present deal), some think he will overtake The Great One. The record should be broken by him, but when he does so will depend on how successfully he meets his target production in 2024–2025.

Alex Ovechkin Can Still Score 42 Goals

Some may point out that during the previous season, Alex Ovechkin appeared to be slowing down. In 79 games, he totaled 65 points at the end of the 2023–24 season with 31 goals and 34 assists. Even though he turns 39 in September, he continues to score goals on a regular basis. Furthermore, Ovechkin is the only player who can bounce back quickly, score 40+ goals, and be close to 40 years old.

Even though he only scored 31 goals in the previous year, Ovechkin scored 42 goals in the 2022–2023 campaign. He’s not far from reaching that target figure. I think he can pull it off in 2024–25 if he can do it twice as well. He is surrounded by excellent players who will facilitate his achievement. Important players from previous teams like T.J. Oshie, Nicklas Backstrom, and Eugeny Kuznetsov will be absent for him. Nonetheless, Tom Wilson and Dylan Strome, two strong teammates, can provide support. Wilson was fourth on the team in points last season with 35, while Strome led the Capitals with 67 points.

It is still necessary for head coach Spencer Carbery to work out the lines throughout training camp and the preseason. Additionally, Ovechkin may be paired with one of the younger players whom previous general manager Brian MacLellan traded for, such as Andrew Mangiapane or Pierre-Luc Dubois. He might score more goals with a different line-up. MacLellan attempted to raise the team’s target total by trading for Dubois and Mangiapane. They had the fewest Goals For in the Eastern Conference last season, with only 220 goals scored. In addition to helping Ovechkin move closer to beating Gretzky, increasing his goals from 2023 to 24 will help the club win more games and go farther in the playoffs.

Alex Ovechkin in His Office

When Ovechkin is set up in his specific location in the left faceoff circle, it will greatly aid his goal totals. Regardless of how frequently he visits that location, he consistently finds methods to score there. Despite being aware of how automatic that area may be, all the other teams in the league are still unable to prevent him from scoring goals there. Feeding him as much as possible in his place during a power play is one strategy to assist increase his goal totals. By doing this, he may surpass his 31 goals from the previous campaign.

In the worst case scenario, Ovechkin will have one more year remaining on his current deal to beat Gretzky’s record if he doesn’t do it this season. He will undoubtedly clinch up the record in 2025–2026. I still believe it takes place in late 2024 or early 2025. Perhaps the new players can help. Perhaps a fresh line will find favor, or perhaps he will simply go on a scoring binge. Numerous options exist. The hockey community will soon find out if this campaign breaks the previous record.
