The next year, Garner had cameos on the television shows Law & Order and Spin City.

Garner started getting roles in TV series and films after relocating to Los Angeles. In 1997, she landed her first major part as Mary Rose Clayborne in the television film Rose Hill, which was adapted from Julie Garwood’s Western novel For the Roses. Not too long after, Garner starred in her first feature films, Washington Square (a drama) and Mr. Magoo (a comedy) (both 1997). She was cast for the television series Significant Others in 1998 and Time of Your Life, a Party of Five spin-off, in 1999; however, both programs were canceled after a few episodes. But in 2001, Abrams gave Garner her big break when she was chosen to play Sydney Bristow in the action-thriller television series Alias. Garner received the 2002 Golden Globe Award for best actress in a television drama because of the show’s critical praise. Despite never drawing a sizable following, Alias ran for five seasons before coming to an end in 2006.
