Julian Alvarez responded to Pep Guardiola’s comments about him as he focuses on Argentina at the Olympic Games in Paris.

The Manchester City striker helped his national team to book their place in the quarter-finals of the men’s football with a 2-0 win over Ukraine on Tuesday, but had already attracted headlines for comments he made before the game. A pre-match interview where Alvarez appeared to indicate he was unhappy with being left out of important matches was put to Guardiola at a press conference on Monday, and the response of the City manager was blunt.

“I know he wants to play important moments, yeah,” he said. “But the other ones [do] too. 18, 19 players as well want to play the big games. I read he wants to think about it. Okay, think about it and after that he will inform us what he wants to do.”

Alvarez spoke to reporters after Argentina’s win over Ukraine and said his thinking this summer is no different to any other as he reiterated he is happy at the Etihad. “I heard what Guardiola said,” he told TyC Sports. “I don’t have much to say about it.

“I never said anything bad. I just said that I was going to think about it like I do every season to make an analysis of what happened last season, a projection of what may come. I always say that I am comfortable and happy at City, which is a great club. I didn’t say anything bad.”

Claudio Echeverri, a young midfielder signed by City from River Plate who has stayed on loan at his former club as Alvarez did in 2022, scored for Argentina against Ukraine as he continues to build his reputation. Argentina will play hosts France in the quarter-final, who topped their group with three straight wins.
