Luka Doncic talks about joining Slovenia NT, duel vs. Giannis
2024 June 27 18:23
Luka Doncic once again confirmed that he’ll play for Slovenia whenever he can. He also talked about a possible matchup against Greece and Giannis Antetokounmpo, admitting that there’s basically no way to stop the Milwaukee Bucks star.

Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic joined Slovenia’s national team and took time with the Slovenian media to discuss various topics, including his decision to represent his country, a potential matchup against Greece and Giannis Antetokounmpo, a partnership with Josh Nebo, and more
“It wasn’t that easy to make a decision, mainly because of all the injuries and the length of our season, but now I’m here, and it’s an honor to be here,” Doncic admitted while talking to the Slovenian media. “I didn’t doubt it; I didn’t even think much; I knew that in the end, I would be part of the national team.”
“In the playoffs, I was only focused on Dallas and the games, but I knew how it would be. The Mavericks know that I will always play [for Slovenia] if I can, so there were no dilemmas,” added the Mavericks superstar.

Doncic once again talked about the joy he feels while playing for his country.
“I enjoy playing basketball very much. I’m really happy that it’s my job. Every time I wake up, and there’s a training session or a game waiting for me, I’m happy. It’s always an honor to play for the national team. I love playing for Slovenia. I always say that I will play for Slovenia whenever I can,” said Doncic.
While discussing his physical condition, Doncic admitted that he’s far from being 100% healthy, but his overall situation improves daily.
“All the injuries hindered me, then I kind of got used to everything and fell into the rhythm of the games, because they were scheduled from day to day. As for my knee, I wouldn’t go into details, but everything is getting better day by day,” he noted.
Doncic and Slovenia are set to travel to Piraeus, Greece, to try to win a ticket to the Paris Olympics.

Doncic admitted that he expects a difficult tournament while adding that it’s basically impossible to stop the Greek and Milwaukee Bucks Giannis Antetokounnmpo.
“We expect an exceptional atmosphere in Piraeus; we know that the Greeks are very loud; we know where we are going,” Doncic said. “We’ll face exceptional opponents, led by the Greeks and Giannis Antetokounmpo.”
“I don’t think anyone has an answer on how to stop him, we all know what kind of player he is. It’s difficult to stop him, we can only limit his contribution a little,” he added.
Nevertheless, the Dallas Mavericks star believes that Slovenia is capable of making its 2nd Olympic appearance in a row.
“Playing at the Olympic Games would mean a lot, not only to me, but to the whole team and, I believe, to the whole of Slovenia,” Doncic said. “Qualifying for the Olympic Games is not easy; we have managed to do it once so far, and it would be an honor for us to succeed again.”

“I don’t know if this tournament will be more difficult than the one in Lithuania; even then, the Greeks have an excellent team. We will focus on Croatia and New Zealand first, and we talked about how to proceed,” he noted.
On Thursday, Slovenia’s head coach, Aleksandar Sekulic, decided to cut Mike Tobey from the extended roster, meaning that Josh Nebo will be the naturalized player who will represent the Olympics.
When asked what he thinks about the potential partnership with Nebo, Doncic didn’t have an answer yet.
“For now, we haven’t practiced five-on-five, at least since I’ve been here. Today we have the first such training, so I’ll be able to say more after Friday’s match with Brazil,” Doncic concluded.

Jamie Carragher gives honest Phil Foden verdict after watching him for England against Slovenia
Wed 26 June 2024 09:00
Updated Wed 26 June 2024 09:27
Tom Procter
Jamie Carragher was keen to make a point about Phil Foden, after watching the Manchester City star in action for England against Slovenia at Euro 2024 on Tuesday night.
England could only manage a 0-0 draw with Slovenia last night in their final group-stage match, but it was enough for them to top their group with five points.
It was yet another awful performance, although marginally better than against Denmark and Gareth Southgate’s substitutes did give good accounts of themselves.
It was largely more of the same from the Three Lions. There was a lack of control in the midfield and more sloppiness at times.
Slovenia, to their credit, defended well. But this was no doubt another highly disappointing collective performance.
Phil Foden has again been a big talking point for many, and Jamie Carragher believes he needs to do more.

Southgate once again deployed Foden out on the left against Slovenia.
Although last night, he came into the middle a lot more, rotating with Jude Bellingham.
When Foden did come inside as the number 10, he looked far better and played with more freedom and was more difficult for the Slovenia players to pick up.
He was probably one of England’s better players on the night, but he is still far from where most expect him to be for the national team.
He didn’t come in for much sympathy from Carragher, who mentioned the City man in his latest column with The Telegraph.
He said: “The tactical decisions taken by the manager so far can be debated – there is no question they must change in the knockout stages – but they have hardly been outrageous.
“Phil Foden has played wide for most of his career at Manchester City.
“He has played the same role for England for four years and never replicated his club form.”
And this morning on X, Carragher replied to a fan: “Foden has played wide for most of his City career, Jude plays off the front for Madrid, Saka plays wide right for Arsenal & Kane is up top. They are all brilliant players but they have to do more, it can’t always be about the manager!”
It’s very different with England
READ MORE: Who is Phil Foden? Inside the life of Man City’s ‘Stockport Iniesta’
Granted, Foden has underwhelmed in an England shirt and most people would probably say that at this point.
As Carragher points out, Foden has spent a lot of his career so far playing in wide positions. But it’s just a different experience for him with England.
The level is not the same, and also at the moment he’s got Kieran Trippier behind him, a player who is playing out of position. Perhaps the story would be slightly different if Luke Shaw was playing and holding the width more.
It is so frustrating to see Foden playing for England at the moment.
We all know that he’s had success playing for City on the left in the past. But it just seems negligent from Southgate at this point to not play him centrally, when he’s just had the season he’s had. Especially knowing that Bellingham can operate as a number eight to accommodate him.

We’ll take VAR’s word for it, but we have to admit the offside call to disallow Mo Salah’s cameo goal is rather dubious.
Screenshots of the incident shared online during Liverpool’s Europa League clash with Sparta Prague certainly indicate it was, at the very least, a particularly tight call.
Errrrrrr…. is that offside? pic.twitter.com/4e7siWRb41

We’re not quite sure if the VAR operators have based the lines on our Egyptian King or one of his teammates though.
He looks, in our view, to be just about onside.
Ah well. A 5-1 win it is in Prague, thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai’s late effort!

5 talking points from Liverpool’s 5-1 win vs Sparta Prague
Alex Caple
ALEX CAPLE
Liverpool beat Sparta Prague 5-1 in the first leg of their Europa League Last 16 meeting. Here are five talking points from the game.
ONE RISK TOO MANY?
Jurgen Klopp didn’t take too many chances with his starting XI. No abundance of kids here in what was a very strong team, but also one that didn’t risk fitness.
Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai both started on the bench, with Conor Bradley and Virgil van Dijk also out of the XI for once. It was a team that offered plenty of hints for the plan against Manchester City.

The downside? Ibrahima Konaté went off early in the second half, bringing Van Dijk on earlier than planned. We’ll see how that affects things at the weekend, though the Frenchman did walk off.
DARWIN NOTCHES NO.1000
Darwin Nunez put on a show here. He only played 49 minutes but managed to score two fantastic goals that essentially killed the tie.
The first saw him compoase himself before sending a swirling shot over the goalkeeper from the edge of the box. The second was a first-time finish to send a bouncing ball into the far corner from distance.
Just two moments of magic from a player in fantastic form.
His first was also notable for being the 1000th Liverpool goal under Jurgen Klopp – a historic one, then. A no better player to score it than someone who is epitomising the German’s style of play right now.
KELLEHER INCREDIBLE ONCE AGAIN
Caoimhin Kelleher has one of the most difficult tasks going in living up to Alisson Becker. He’s somehow doing it.
The Irishman came into this one on the back of three clean sheets and was bitterly unlucky not to make it four. His first-half save was world-class, and he then provided another brilliant stop to tip a dipping ball over the bar.
Jurgen Klopp has long said he’s the best no.2 goalkeeper in football. He’s certainly playing like that right now.
MUCH-NEEDED RESULT
Liverpool have some enormous games coming up. The big win here just eliminated one of them – the Reds can go into the second leg next week with a four-goal headstart.
That should allow plenty of rest ahead of the FA Cup clash with Manchester United before the international break. And it means Klopp and co. won’t be worrying about that fixture during the big one this Sunday.
A positive game all-around, then – except for that Konaté injury.
ONTO THE MAN CITY GAME
Liverpool’s attention now turns to Manchester City and the biggest game of the season this Sunday. A win would leave the Reds as title favourites.
They very nearly set themselves up perfectly here. Darwin Nunez got 49 minutes, Dominik Szoboszlai and Mo Salah both got second-half minutes, and they were able to rotate well in midfield across the 90 minutes.
Of course, the Konaté injury (we’ll mention it one more time) is an issue. If it turns out to be nothing, then this was exactly what Liverpool needed going into Sunday.

Darwin Nunez is just an absolute pleasure to watch, isn’t he?
You’ve seen him hit some stunners, you’ve seen him miss sitters – but he never (NEVER) fails to entertain in the famous red shirt Liverpool.
Nor our white and green away shirt for 2023/24, with the Uruguayan doubling our lead in Prague with a superb long-range effort.
All that and in his 50th start for Jurgen Klopp’s men! How about that, eh?

Confirmed Liverpool lineup vs. Sparta Prague: Nunez starts, Salah on bench
March 7, 2024
Jack Lusby
There are three changes to Jurgen Klopp‘s starting lineup as Liverpool visit Sparta Prague in the Europa League, with Mohamed Salah back in the squad after injury.
The leaders of the Premier League and Czech First League meet in the Europa League this evening, with the Reds hoping to keep up their momentum with a valuable win.
Having been plagued with injuries in recent weeks, the situation is easing for Liverpool, though Klopp has named a rotated side at Stadion Letna.
Caoimhin Kelleher makes a seventh consecutive start in the ongoing absence of Alisson, with Joe Gomez, Jarell Quansah, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson making up the back four.
Wataru Endo starts as the No. 6, with Harvey Elliott and Alexis Mac Allister in the more advanced midfield roles.
And with Salah available again on the bench, Klopp fields a forward line of Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez.
Virgil van Dijk is among the more senior options in reserve and could replace Konate at half-time, with one eye on Sunday’s visit of Man City.
There could also be a debut for 20-year-old forward Mateusz Musialowski, who is named in a matchday squad for the first time.
Liverpool: Kelleher; Gomez, Quansah, Konate, Robertson; Endo, Elliott, Mac Allister; Gakpo, Diaz, Nunez
Substitutes: Adrian, Mrozek, Van Dijk, Bradley, Tsimikas, Szoboszlai, McConnell, Clark, Salah, Gordon, Koumas, Musialowski
Sparta Prague: Vindahl; Vitik, Krejci, Sorensen; Preciado, Kairinen, Solbakken, Zeleny; Birmancevic, Haraslin, Kuchta
Substitutes: Vorel, Surovcik, Olatunji, Karabec, Tuci, Sadilek, Mejdr, Laci, Vydra, Wiesner, Sevcik, Rynes
