Phil Foden discusses the impact Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has had on his career – and is grateful the Spaniard has been patient with him
Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden says Pep Guardiola’s faith in him has been “massive” for his own belief and confidence – and thanked the Spaniard for his patience as he continues to develop into a top player.

Guardiola has made no secret of his admiration for Foden, previously stating that he is “priceless” and that City would not sell him even if they were offered 140m euros (£145m).

The 20-year-old, recently called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the first time, made 38 appearances for City last season – starting key games such as the Champions League win over Real Madrid – and is set for a bigger role within the City team for the 2020/21 season as they look to regain the Premier League title from Liverpool.

Asked about the impact of Guradiola’s faith in him, Foden said: “It’s been massive. I’ve played in some massive games this year, like cup finals and big Champions League games. They’re the games that everyone wants to play in.

“Sometimes it’s difficult for young players to be involved in those games. I think he’s been patient with me and played me at the right time. Now I’m learning a lot and feel ready to go.

“He wants to see good attitude every day, he wants to see you training and playing well.

“I go to training every day and give 100 per cent – that’s where you can’t go wrong. I’m giving everything to get in the team. That’s what I’m trying to do.

“If I don’t get in the team, I know that I’ve put 100 per cent in. If I get in the team, I know I’ve earned it. That’s how I work and I think that’s what he (Pep) likes about me as well.”

Foden says he always dreamed of playing for England while growing up on his estate
Foden, quizzed on his first call-up to Southgate’s England side, admitted that it “hadn’t sunk in yet” but that he always dreamed of playing for his country while growing up on his estate.

”When I was young, every kid on the estate dreamed of playing for England,” Foden added. “We all pretended that we were the players. Now I’m in the senior team, it seems crazy and it hasn’t really sank in.

“I just hope that I can make my debut, it will be a big moment for me and my family.

“We’ve got a great coach in Gareth. He gives young kids a chance and he’s not afraid to put you in.

“The U21s are full of quality, anyone can step up for sure. Sometimes you have to be patient, the step is there and it’s not far off.”

Enzo Maresca wants talks with the Leicester City hierarchy over finances and transfers as he looks to correct “things I didn’t like” ahead of the club’s Premier League return.

The City manager has avoided some of the more difficult topics of conversation around the club this season in order to keep the focus on their promotion bid. But with a place in the Premier League secured and the Championship title now wrapped up, he’s ready to sit down with the club’s directors and work out some of the knottier issues.

After being charged with a breach of Profit and Sustainability regulations (PSR) for the 22-23 campaign, City are expected to start the new season with a points deduction. More financial troubles mean sales of players would be required this June in order for the club to avoid a second breach.

Concerns that they would go beyond the EFL threshold stopped City from completing a transfer for Inter Milan midfielder Stefano Sensi in January. The Italian arrived at Seagrave on deadline day, but time ran out as City and Inter debated the minute details of the deal.

With loanee Cesare Casadei recalled by Chelsea that month, it left Maresca one midfielder down for the second half of the season, and he expressed a few times his irritation that Sensi had not been signed. He also revealed at the start of January that he had only been made aware of the club’s financial issues as the transfer window opened.

Those incidents have left Maresca wanting to “clarify” and “modify” processes behind the scenes at City. Asked after the 3-0 win over Preston if he was beginning to get excited for the Premier League season, Maresca said: “No, to be honest. Now it’s time to enjoy a little bit, finish well, then we’re going to sit with the club.

“I’ve told you already this season that, in January, when we had the problems with Casadei and Sensi, that was not the moment to talk about that. I told you when we had the financial problems that it was not the moment to talk about that because we needed to be focused on our target. Now the season is finished, I need to sit with the club and to try to clarify things that unfortunately this year I didn’t like.”

Put to Maresca that he sounded frustrated, he added: “No, I’m not frustrated. I’m the most happy man in the world in this moment. But because I’m in charge of this club in terms of being the manager, I need things to work well. For me, there are things we need to clarify and we need to modify. Now is the moment to enjoy, but things happened this season that I didn’t like.”

And Maresca is not the only person who needs to sit down with the club before the summer begins. City have six players out of contract at the end of June. Jamie Vardy is looking increasingly likely to stay, but the futures of Jannik Vestergaard, Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Dennis Praet, and Marc Albrighton are up in the air.

TRANSFERSReport: Manchester City midfielder ‘desperate’ to join English football giantsPublished: 12:30 on April 30th 2024 | Last Updated: 12:07 on April 30th 2024By Freddie Pye

Manchester City are likely to entertain offers for first-team outcast Kalvin Phillips, with the player now said to be ‘desperate’ to join his former club Leeds United.

The England international is on the verge of facing a major crossroads in his top-level professional playing career, with his stay at the Etihad Stadium not expected to go much further beyond the end of the ongoing season.

In an attempt to force his way back into the thinking of England boss Gareth Southgate ahead of the European Championships, Phillips sanctioned a move to West Ham during the recent January transfer market, but such a move has not paid dividends.

Following numerous questionable performances and errors leading to goals for opposition teams, Phillips once again finds himself restricted to substitute duties, and is unlikely to feature much more during the remaining matches of the campaign.

However, a fresh opportunity could present itself during the upcoming summer market, should his former club end the season on the ultimate high by securing promotion back into the Premier League.

According to the information of Football Insider, Kalvin Phillips is ‘desperate’ to re-sign for current Championship side and English football giants Leeds United during the upcoming summer transfer window.

The report has detailed that West Ham United coaches – whom the midfielder currently operates under whilst on loan from Manchester City for the remainder of the ongoing season – are ‘convinced’ that “all Phillips is interested in is playing for Leeds”.

Kalvin Phillips originally signed for Manchester City in July 2022 on a six-year contract, in the same window as the likes of Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez, for a reported initial fee of £42 million potentially rising to £45 million in add-ons.

However, given the exceptionally high standards set by Rodri in defensive midfield for City, it was almost an impossible task for Phillips to establish himself as a mainstay in Pep Guardiola’s system, whilst he also struggled to grasp the requirements of the playing style.

Manchester City may be open to another temporary move away from the club for Kalvin Phillips for the 2024/25 season, but the player would almost certainly require consistent game time if he is to return to his form of earlier in his career.

TRANSFERSManchester City ‘propose a five-year deal’ to versatile €30 million Turkish forwardPublished: 21:00 on April 29th 2024 | Last Updated: 15:16 on April 29th 2024By Harry Winters

Manchester City have reportedly taken steps to sign Besiktas forward Semih Kılıçsoy this summer amid rivalled Premier League interest.

The 18-year-old has emerged as a potential transfer target for Manchester City after a successful campaign with Besiktas in the Turkish top-flight, as Etihad officials face the prospect of a potential summer rebuild of Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad.

Manchester City, who remain in pursuit of a domestic double by winning both the Premier League and Emirates FA Cup, are bracing for a series of potential senior departures from the club for a second successive summer.

Guardiola lost trio Ilkay Gundogan, Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte in 2023, and could lose both Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva in 2024, amid growing uncertainty regarding the future of the midfield pair.

The treble-winners have been linked with a number of potential additions, including Brazilian duo Lucas Paqueta and Bruno Guimarães, as well as the Bundesliga’s Jammal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich and Dani Olmo.

Turkey Under-21 international Semih Kılıçsoy has also emerged a potential transfer target, with North London pair Arsenal and Tottenham having been previously linked with the versatile teenage forward.

The 18-year-old has been directly involved in 13 goals in 29 appearances for Besiktas so far this season, and has also featured in the club’s UEFA Europa Conference League campaign.

The teenager has been watched by Manchester City scouts, and according to outlet Sport Witness, the Sky Blues are ‘preparing to make an offer’ for Kılıçsoy, with a ‘proposed five-year deal’ to the player.

Kılıçsoy would reportedly cost €30 million, making a potential move to the Premier League a record transfer from the Turkish top-flight.

Matchday Gallery | Bowen header gives Hammers half-time lead over Liverpool
2 HOURS AGO
Liverpool
Jarrod Bowen’s 43rd minute header has given West Ham United an interval lead against Liverpool at London Stadium.

Bowen returned to the starting XI following injury to make his 200th West Ham appearance, and he marked it by breaking the deadlock just before half-time, nodding home Mohammed Kudus’ cross following a quickly-taken corner.

Liverpool’s Luis Díaz had earlier struck the post in a closely-contested opening half, but it is the home side who have the advantage.

How would you rate Maresca’s first season as City manager? Let us know in the comments section below.
