What Kevin De Bruyne did at full time vs Chelsea shows Man City truth amid double chase

Manchester City dug deep to secure a brilliant win over Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final – even if they were far from their best at Wembley.

Was Manchester City’s ‘worst performance of the season’ actually their best?

City were tired against Chelsea, kicking off less than three days since crashing out of the Champions League following 120 long minutes against Real Madrid. They kept faith with seven of the starters who faced Real and lost two of their fresher players to injury. No wonder they weren’t at their best at Wembley. They didn’t need to be.

The fact that they still reached a second successive FA Cup final despite all those challenges shows what kind of a team Pep Guardiola has created. ‘You are tired? F— you’, he famously said in the Amazon documentary a few years back, and he was unimpressed with Rodri’s public complaints of tiredness earlier this month.

He dismissed the idea that the tight turnaround this week would be an excuse, insisting his side would deal with it. Kevin De Bruyne was ‘exhausted’ and asked to come off against Madrid but here he was playing 90 minutes at Wembley. He’s still not back to his best and the scope for him to get a much-needed rest to reset is non-existent. But for all his on-pitch frustrations and a fair few misplaced passes, he was at the heart of City’s winning goal.

As Guardiola has also said – De Bruyne doesn’t help you play better but he helps you to win games. And that’s all City needed to do on Saturday. De Bruyne was named man of the match by the BBC commentators, but it was Bernardo who went from zero to hero in the space of three days.

He popped up at the back post – from De Bruyne’s deflected cross – to score the all-important winner at Wembley. He was derided outside of the CFA for his missed penalty three days ago, and here he was keeping the double double dream alive, with 210 minutes in three days.

Phil Foden was bright again despite all the minutes, Rodri looked like a dead man walking fitness-wise but continued to throw himself in front of shots. Manu Akanji covered John Stones’ fitness issues to be the marauding centre-back to decent effect in another big game. Jack Grealish continued his fine form and when he was replaced for the second game running, Jeremy Doku created the decisive goal.

City may be walking wounded, with only 16 fit outfield players after the latest injury issues at Wembley, but they have a spirit that drags them through. The luck that deserted them against Real Madrid was on their side here.

When the full time whistle blew, City players discovered a new lease of life. De Bruyne, Rodri and Grealish (substituted after a nasty-looking kick) all sprinted to the City end. De Bruyne hailed the character and resilience in the side. Guardiola looked amazed at what his players had just produced.

It may not have been vintage City in terms of performance, but it was absolutely ‘typical City’ in terms of character. The notion of ‘Typical City’ being a negative thing is slowly becoming a guarantee of hard work and grit to underline their sick play when everything comes together.

So for everyone online claiming this was City’s worst performance of the season, that they were lucky, maybe they earned their luck this time. Maybe they’re a side who can win when playing badly. And maybe they’re still on for a double. And maybe De Bruyne doesn’t need to play well if he continues to win games.

Mikel Arteta reacts to Pep Guardiola’s furious rant that took Gary Lineker by surprise
Pep Guardiola labelled the decision to schedule Manchester City’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Chelsea on Saturday as “unacceptable,” having played in the Champions League three days earlier

Mikel Arteta echoed Pep Guardiola’s concerns over player welfare after the Manchester City boss’ furious rant about fixture scheduling.

Guardiola’s men were made to play their FA Cup semi-final match against Chelsea on Saturday evening, less than three full days since their Champions League quarter-final clash with Real Madrid. The second leg went all the way to penalties, as holders City were eliminated.

The other FA Cup semi-final between Manchester United and Coventry, meanwhile, was selected for Sunday, despite both teams not playing since last Saturday. The decision left Guardiola raging in a post-match interview with Gary Lineker, saying that his players were “legends” for overcoming the short turnaround and beating Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley via Bernardo Silva’s 84th-minute winner.

Also playing on Saturday night were title rivals Arsenal, who were in Premier League action as they secured a hard-fought 2-0 win away to Wolves. Arsenal boss Arteta was asked about Guardiola’s comments and replied: “It’s not about us, Pep our myself it’s about the wellbeing of the players.

Pep Guardiola set to make history – despite Man City planning for life without him
“When you compete in European competition every team has to compete in the same way. You cannot have a team that hasn’t played for seven days, or three days before and has more recovery time and then you have to play in the Premier League and the FA Cup.

“It is not right. If you look in any angle it’s not right. Let’s protect the players and do everything we can to give them the maximum time to help them recover.”

The pair’s comments came two days after the Football Association announced that they’ll be scrapping replays beyond the first round proper in next season’s FA Cup due to concerns over player welfare. But Guardiola wants more to be done, telling Lineker for BBC Sport : “It’s unacceptable. It’s really unacceptable.

“Coventry, United and Chelsea don’t play in the week, [but] they let us play today. Next week, on Friday it would be better. Instead of Saturday, put it on Friday to let us have a recovery.”

Asked if he felt that City had been treated unfairly, the Treble-winning manager continued: “It’s impossible, for the health of the players! It’s not normal. Honestly, it’s not normal. We didn’t have the courage to tell you, to FIFA we shut up, but it’s not possible. It’s unacceptable – 120 minutes.

“All of you (Lineker, Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard and Micah Richards ) are football players. The emotion against Madrid, the quarter-final, we lose and everything. So honestly, I know this country, it is special for many things but it is for the health of the players. I don’t understand how we survived today.”

Then asked if he’d raised his concerns with the FA, Guardiola replied: “Gary, you think us demanding is going to change something? The only power I have is to say here. It’s not going to change anything. I know it for many years. But why we play today and not tomorrow, with one day off, when Coventry and United and Chelsea don’t play in the mid-week? Why?

“Why don’t you have one more day for the health of the players? For me, as a manager, tell me how you prepare for this game against Chelsea in their best moment of the season? How? It’s impossible. There is no chance.”

Chelsea star spotted laughing after Man City loss as team-mate’s reaction speaks volumes
Chelsea were dumped out of the FA Cup by Man City on Saturday evening.

Noni Madueke risked the wrath of Chelsea supporters after he was seen joking around with Manchester City ace Jack Grealish following his side’s exit from the FA Cup. The winger was spotted in the background of footage of Thiago Silva in tears after the loss.

Pep Guardiola blasts ‘unacceptable’ FA Cup decision as he vents anger to Lineker
A late Bernardo Silva goal dumped Chelsea out of the FA Cup, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side set to go trophyless for another season. It wasn’t for the lack of trying from Chelsea, who enjoyed the best chances of the tie, but were unable to find a breakthrough.

Madueke had started the game, but the winger was hauled off in the second half as Chelsea went in search of a winner. However, despite the disappointment, Madueke was spotted laughing with Grealish following the full-time whistle.

The response of team-mate and elder statesman Silva was in sharp contrast, with the veteran defender covering his face while he held back the tears. It was a reaction that spoke volumes, with Silva clearly distraught by Chelsea’s exit.

Manchester City v Chelsea – Emirates FA Cup Semi Final

It comes after Madueke was once again in the headlines for the wrong reasons earlier in the week, with the England youth international caught up in Chelsea’s penalty saga against Everton. Madueke was one of three players jostling to take a spot-kick against the Toffees – something Pochettino was quick to blast after the game.

Lamenting his players’ immature attitudes, the Argentine coach said: “It’s a shame. I was telling the players before, when we arrived, we had a meeting with all the staff, to explain and we were talking, it’s a shame we can’t behave in this way.

“I told them it’s the last time I accept this kind of behaviour. Involved, all out. It is impossible after a result like this to have that kind of behaviour, it shows that we are in a process, that we need to learn a lot like a team if we want to be a great team we need to think more in a collective way.”

The semi-final defeat means Chelsea will end the season trophyless, with the Blues’ hopes of qualifying for Europe also hanging by a thread. Three points separate Chelsea and sixth-placed Newcastle United, but the good news for Pochettino and co. is they do boast a game in hand over most of their European rivals.

Manchester City are out of the Champions League after a heartbreaking penalty shootout exit to Real Madrid in their epic quarter-final.

Real had taken the lead early on, beating the offside trap to convert at the second attempt through Rodrygo. It would take an hour of patient play, slow build-up and chances slowly being carved out until City were level. Jack Grealish had been brilliant for over an hour and eyebrows were raised when he was replaced – but Jeremy Doku was an inspired introduction in his place.

Doku’s cross was blocked but only as far as De Bruyne, who fired into the roof of the net and sent the City fans wild. The Belgian wasted two good chances before the 90 minutes were up, but extra time would follow to extend this enthralling tie. Penalties were needed to decide the tie, with Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic missing their spot-kicks to allow Real a chance to progress – an opportunity they wouldn’t pass up after a heroic defensive effort on their part.
