Pep Guardiola saw his Manchester City team take a huge step towards his first priority of the season on Wednesday, but still wasn’t happy.

Victory over fourth-placed Aston Villa kept City firmly in the title hunt, beating a top five rival for the first time this season at the seventh attempt. It also kept City ten points ahead of fifth-place as they look to lock in another year of Champions League football – the first thing Guardiola looks for every season.

City could still qualify for Europe with an unlikely fifth-placed finish depending on the Premier League’s co-efficient ranking at the end of the season, or also by winning the Champions League again. It would be a huge surprise to see them collapse from here, but despite that Guardiola was taking aim at the authorities before and after the win over Villa.

“In two days at 12.30pm we have another game,” said Guardiola pre-match, explaining his eye-catching decision to rest Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne. “I think all the teams are top and have big squads and a good squad, and of course we have it. That is the position we decide today for this line-up, for this tough opening and go for it.”

At full time, Guardiola again pointed to the schedule and hinted at changes on Saturday lunchtime at Crystal Palace. “We have an incredible schedule, every three days,” he bemoaned.

“The schedule is terrible. Three days, three days, three days. We have to bring new energy for each game and everybody has to be involved. All the guys were good and in the next game we’re going to play different players.”

That suggests the plan is to recall De Bruyne and Haaland at Selhurst Park, and why wouldn’t you if you had your two best players well-rested. They had both struggled against Arsenal on Sunday, but are players who have that knack of putting frustrating games behind them quickly. Don’t bet against them starting on Saturday – not that those odds would be at all generous.

However, in their place, Guardiola discovered an exciting new front four who put together one of City’s best attacking performances of the season. Phil Foden got a hat-trick from his favourite number ten role, Julian Alvarez was unlucky not to follow him with at least two goals in his preferred main striker position.

Jack Grealish is improving after struggles with form and injury and looked dangerous again on the left, with Jeremy Doku building on impressive recent displays with a first assist since November when he notched four against Bournemouth – 21 games previously.

Guardiola did cite Foden’s dip against Arsenal because of his recent workload, but the pair are 23 and 24, they should be able to handle three games in a week. The manager also rarely persists with a single attacker in every single game, and it’s impossible to leave Haaland and De Bruyne on the bench for any extended run

However, they say don’t change a winning formula, so that would mean sticking with the Foden and Alvarez partnership as a nine and ten if Guardiola subscribed to such basic cliches. Foden has 21 goals and ten assists, and Alvarez has 16 goals with 13 assists. Only Haaland (29 goals, five assists) has more goal involvements than the duo this term).

The obvious selection is to recall Haaland and De Bruyne, but the thought must be in Guaridola’s head after the Villa win that Foden and Alvarez are simply producing more in attack in recent weeks.

Phil Foden’s sublime hat-trick fired Manchester City to victory against Aston Villa to keep up their pursuit of Arsenal and Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

Mikel Areta’s side went top earlier on Wednesday evening with a win over Luton but the defending champions ensured they remained in touch with a strong 4-1 victory.

While it was a controlled collective performance, they had Foden to thank for a commanding victory. After Jhon Duran had responded to Rodri’s early opener, the England international curled home a free kick to nudge Manchester City in front just before the interval.

Foden then swept home from the edge of the box before producing a magnificent strike from distance to complete his hat-trick and secure all three points. It meant Pep Guardiola could leave Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne on the bench, with the two stars rested in a hectic fortnight of football.

Unai Emery’s visitors were without an injured Ollie Watkins and suspended John McGinn, and struggled to produce consistent threat. Aston Villa remain fourth, two points ahead of Tottenham, who have a game in hand.

Phil Foden’s imperious hat-trick against Aston Villa revitalises Manchester City’s title challenge
If hat-tricks used to be Erling Haaland’s personal domain, a rival is emerging. The Norwegian may have the largest collection of match balls at Manchester City but he had a watching brief as Phil Foden scored his second treble of 2024 and his third in 19 months. For someone who isn’t a striker, Foden is contriving to outscore virtually all of them – if not his Norwegian teammate – and his evisceration of Aston Villa took him into previously uncharted territory. He now has 21 goals for the season, reaching 20 for the first time in his career.

Phil Foden: I’m loving my football at the moment
“I’m just loving my football at the moment. I know I am capable of scoring goals, and today I showed that. I’m delighted.

“I always want to better last season, get more goal contributions. I’m doing more. I see myself as a really technical player and I think I can do that more in the middle. The manager has said before that I will grow into that position because I was always going so quick; I think I’m getting the balance right.

“I always try to arrive in the box. You get at least five goals in the season arriving in the box late. There’s still a lot to improve on. I don’t actually practice free kicks, but I felt confident, and Julian gave it to me. It worked out!”

Manchester City 4-1 Aston Villa
So Manchester City move to within a point of Arsenal and the summit of the Premier League table, though Liverpool will be back on top if they beat Sheffield United tomorrow night. Pep Guardiola will be pleased to have got through the game unscathed, with a fresh Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne to bring back in.

Rodri speaks to TNT Sports after Manchester City’s win
“Today we played amazing from the first minute. We conceded the goal, but we kept pace in the game, and in general it was one of the best of the season.

“We knew that we had to have more players in the box from the game against Arsenal. That was the message from the beginning of the game. I want to help the team as much as possible – it’s not my role to score goals, but I know I can do more in the final third. It’s something I’ve been working on and focussing on.

“Phil Foden has grown every year since I’ve been here. He can score from wherever he wants. He has a special quality – I’m so happy for him.”

Aston Villa aren’t chasing overly hard, the legs weary and the task too tall. Brentford, who drew 0-0 in a snoozefest with Brighton earlier, are the visitors to Villa Park on Saturday.

Manchester City 4-1 Aston Villa, 83 minutes
Manchester City of course have a tight turnaround to Saturday lunchtime’s encounter with Crystal Palace, something that Pep Guardiola was already chuntering about ahead of kick off. Right now, though, the Manchester City manager looks rather more content than his Aston Villa counterpart, Unai Emery cutting an exasperated figure on the touchline as his chase fruitlessly with the hosts calm in possession.

LIVERPOOL PLAYERS TURN AFRICAN SUPERSTAR INTO THE ‘WORLD SAVIOUR’

By Siddharth Juyal

April 4, 2024

Liverpool players turn Mohamed Salah into the world saviour like Daniel Craig’s “James Bond” for World Earth Month with SC Johnson
Mohamed Salah turns into “James Bond” as Liverpool players hold a meeting to prepare for World Earth Month with SC Johnson. Andy Robertson, Ibrahima Konate, Dominik Szoboszlai, Caoimhin Kelleher and Darwin Nunez participated in a hilarious ad for a noble cause.

The advertisement has taken social media by storm with many Liverpool fans around the globe enjoying and reacting to it. The advert starts with Robertson taking over the meeting agenda as Nunez takes his place at the table.

The setting resembled the hilarious mockumentary sitcom television series, The Office but with more diverse characters. Fans noticed the language barrier among the player but the friendly environment and their strong bond superseded that.

The advertisement involved hilarious give-and-take between players as they did their best not to laugh with each other. The atmosphere created a very positive and hilarious interaction among the players who are better at football than acting.

Nevertheless, the Scotland captain showed that he can be as good of a comedy actor as he is a left-back. The advertisement (h/t Liverpool’s X account) made to promote recycling needed a Daniel Craig-level superstar with fame and elegance.

The situation called for the Egypt captain to take centerstage once again and become the hero for Liverpool. Salah showed his plastic bottle throwing technique which is hopefully a practice session for him to resurrect his finishing.

The 31-year-old scored the winning goal against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday but uncharacteristically missed many chances. The Reds need their Egyptian James Bond to be at his best in the last nine Premier League games.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has injected that cohesiveness into the squad which has been instrumental to their success this season. The Reds have already secured the Carabao Cup despite facing a severe injury crisis, inadvertently helping the bright academy players.

Red Bull upgrade rumours and tactical slowing: Nine Japanese GP talking points
Formula 1Posted on
3rd April 2024, 7:15 | Written by Keith Collantine

Formula 1 will make an earlier than usual visit to Suzuka this weekend for the Japanese Grand Prix.

Red Bull suffered a rare defeat in the last round and will be seeking to reassert themselves. Will they have things all their own way again? Here are the talking points for this weekend’s race.

Red Bull rebound
ADVERT | BECOME A SUPPORTER & GO AD-FREE

For the second year in a row, Red Bull will turn up at the home race of their power unit manufacturer having suffered a rare defeat in the previous round (inflicted, again, by Carlos Sainz Jnr and Ferrari).
The dominant champions of the past two seasons will be expected to assert themselves once more, not least because the sinuous Suzuka track should play to the RB20’s many overwhelming strengths. It’s one of the most demanding circuits for tyre degradation, requires a strong handling balance through its many medium-to-high speed corners, and the final sector places an onus on straight-line performance.

Last tear Max Verstappen put his Singapore Grand Prix defeat behind him by blowing the competition away at Suzuka. He claimed pole position by well over half a second and contained the threat from McLaren to control the race. You’d be brave to bet against a repeat this weekend.

On top of that, since testing Red Bull have been rumoured to have earmarked this race for their first major car upgrade. Having made a significant change to the cooling arrangement of their RB20 when it was launch, will we see aerodynamic refinements which allow them to draw further ahead of the competition?

Tsunoda rising, Iwasa arriving

Tsunoda holds the upper hand at RB
The only Japanese driver in the field heads to his home race on a high after scoring RB’s first points in Melbourne. It was a badly-needed boost for Yuki Tsunoda who needs to raise his profile in his fourth season at Red Bull’s second team if he’s to be regarded as a potential replacement for Sergio Perez.
He needs to avoid a repeat of last year where he was beaten to the chequered flag by Liam Lawson. However the team’s reserve driver is more a cause for concern to Tsunoda’s team mate Daniel Ricciardo, who has not impressed so far in the second RB.

However Ricciardo’s efforts to get to grips with their new car won’t be helped by his absence from first practice. RB is giving a run to junior driver Ayumu Iwasa, currently racing in Japan’s Super Formula series, meaning it will have an all-Japanese line-up for the first practice session.

Mercedes the fifth team?

Mercedes’ best finish so far is fifth
The penalty which cost Fernando Alonso sixth place in the Australian Grand Prix had a significance to Mercedes beyond merely highlighting his role in George Russell’s crash.
It also spared the manufacturer team the humiliation of falling to fifth place in the constructors championship behind two of its customers. It heads to Suzuka fourth in the standings, just one point ahead of Alonso’s Aston Martin team.

It may prove difficult for the team to keep its neck above that waterline this weekend. The W15 has not been strong in high-speed corners so far, and there’s plenty of those at Suzuka. Aston Martin have tended to qualify strongly, so their drivers may again find themselves resisting pressure from a chasing Mercedes over the closing stages.

Williams back to full strength?
Mercedes can at least console themselves with the thought one of their customer teams is unlikely to beat them this weekend. Williams got into a pickle all by themselves in Melbourne as they were down to just one car by the second day of running, due to Alexander Albon’s heavy crash. Their decision to displace Logan Sargeant from his seat so Albon could drive was hotly debated, though he ended up just one place away from a point.

The team fully expects to have two chassis ready for this weekend, but will again have no spare. That’s a risky situation to face at Suzuka, where the speeds are high and the barriers are close. It will be a nervy time on the Williams pit wall as they hope both drivers keep it out of the barriers this weekend – just as Sargeant failed to do in Q1 last year.

Drivers slowing down

Stewards penalised Alonso for suddenly slowing
Alonso’s penalty for slowing sharply in front of George Russell on the penultimate lap of the Australian Grand Prix provoked much debate over exactly what he was doing, how far he intended to hinder Russell, and at what point does a legitimate defensive move leave a rival facing an unavoidable crash?
It’s an area of discussion where drivers’ views should take greatest weight. It will be fascinating to learn what their rivals made of the incident and penalty, particularly those with no need to favour either team.

What were Alonso’s battery and throttle problems in the final stint of his race?
Teams slowing down
At the previous round in Jeddah, Kevin Magnussen demonstrated how to delay a rival more gradually over a series of laps, holding up a queue of cars to help team mate Nico Hulkenberg score a valuable point.

Such tactics are easier to pull off at some circuits than others. Albert Park’s two pairs of DRS zones made defending in this way almost impossible (which was why Alonso resorted to such an extreme move). But Suzuka, with its winding first two sectors, is another track where this kind of tactic could work – much as Jacques Villeneuve attempted in 1997.

With points only covering the top 10 places, and the five quickest teams likely to lock those out, the incentive for midfield teams to try similar tactics could be strong if the cards fall the right way after the start.

Suzuka’s title-deciding days are done
Since the Japanese Grand Prix first joined the world championship calendar in 1976, with a race at Fuji Speedway, it has always been held in the second half of the season. That first championship-deciding race, and many more subsequent ones at Suzuka, have become fixtures in the folklore of F1.

That changes this year. The 2024 F1 calendar is the longest in the series’ history and Liberty Media has moved this round in a bid to reduce travel time and cut emissions. It remains to be seen what effect this will have on the race, but the days of title-deciding dramas in Japan are behind us.
