F1 team principals rich list as Christian Horner’s net worth dwarfed by Toto Wolff
F1 is the playground of the rich, with even the team principals earning eyewatering sums of money as they seek to win the drivers and constructors’ world championships
Toto Wolff and Christian Horner are the two richest team bosses in F1
Formula One is renowned for being the playground of the richest people in the world, with its glitzy weekends in the likes of Monaco and Las Vegas.
But it is not only the fans and the drivers who have deep pockets, the people running the teams are also worth an astonishing amount of money. Red Bull are currently the sport’s leading team, having won the last two constructors titles.
Before that, Mercedes dominated F1, winning eight successive world championships. The two sides are led by Christian Horner and Toto Wolff respectively, with the duo two of the most recognisable faces connected with the sport.
The pair also led the way in terms of the amount of money each team boss is worth. Here, Mirror Sport looks at the net worths of all 10 team principals and how they compare.

1) Toto Wolff – net worth £1.27bn
Blowing his rivals out of the water is Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. The Austrian became a billionaire last April, also landing a spot on the official list of Forbes Sports Billionaires.
As well as acting as team principal of the Silver Arrows, Wolff also works as the team’s chief executive and has a 33 per cent stake in them. That stake increased in value by more than £475million last year, which drove Wolff’s net worth.
Before buying his stake in Mercedes, Wolff worked in banking, gaining wealth after founding two investment firms. Along with his other ventures, Mercedes’ success over the past decade has made him one of the richest men in the sport.
2) Christian Horner – net worth £40m

Way behind Wolff in second place is Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. He reportedly earns an annual salary of around £8m, making him the highest-paid team boss in the paddock.
Horner has worked for Red Bull since 2004, having previously founded the Arden team in the junior formulas. His high salary comes from the success Red Bull have achieved under his watch, winning seven Drivers’ titles and six Constructors’ championships.
3) Alessandro Alunni Bravi – net worth £4m

While not technically Sauber’s team principal, Alessandro Alunni Bravi is their ‘team representative’ under chief executive Andreas Seidl and handles the duties of team boss. Bravi replaced Fred Vasseur after his move to Ferrari.
Bravi has been on Sauber’s board for several years, having trained as a lawyer. He has also been the Swiss team’s general counsel since 2017 and previously worked as the team principal of teams in Formula 2.
4) James Vowles – net worth £4m
James Vowles was one of Mercedes’ highest-paid staff members before he joined Williams in 2022 ( Image: Getty Images)
Williams boss James Vowles is one of the new boys to the role, having joined the storied British team ahead of last season. Before joining Williams, Vowles had been one of the key men behind Mercedes’ dominance, working as their strategy director.
That would have put him in one of the Silver Arrows’ highest-paid jobs. Vowles worked his way up through the ranks at the Brackley team, having held jobs when it was branded as BAR, Honda, Brawn and finally Mercedes.
5) Fred Vasseur – net worth £2.5m

While midtable currently, Fred Vasseur will likely move well up the list given he has taken one of F1’s top jobs. Now in his second season as Ferrari’s team principal, Vasseur was previously in charge of Sauber and Renault.
He actually started his career with the Scuderia, working as a performance engineer for Michael Schumacher during his dominant years. He returned to the Italian giants in 2022, with his salary as team principal expected to hit £4m in the coming years.
6) Andrea Stella – net worth £1.2m

Like Vowles, Andrea Stella is also in his first team principal job, having taken over at McLaren from Andreas Seidl. Stella has been a long-time presence in the paddock with a number of teams.
Before taking the top job at McLaren, Stella worked as their racing director, likely one of the team’s highest-paid roles. Though chief executive Zak Brown takes many of the headlines, Stella has been credited with leading McLaren’s remarkable turnaround last season.
7) Laurent Mekies – net worth £1m
Laurent Mekies left Ferrari to take over at RB-Honda ahead of this season ( Image: Getty Images)
Laurent Mekies is F1’s newest team principal having replaced Franz Tost at RB-Honda, following the veteran’s retirement. Before joining Red Bull’s junior team, Mekkies was in the lucrative role of Ferrari’s sporting director.
It has been a difficult season for Mekies and RB, where he had a nine-year stint as chief engineer from 20015 to 2014. Before joining Ferrari as sporting director, he was safety director and deputy race director at the FIA.
8) Mike Krack – net worth £805,000
Mike Krack is in charge at Aston Martin ( Image: Getty Images)
Mike Krack is another first-time team principal having replaced Otmar Szafnauer at Aston Martin in 2022. He has worked in motorsport for much of his career, including a stint as BMW’s chief engineer when they were competing in F1.
He remained with BMW after their exit from F1, focusing his work instead on MSA, Formula E, GT and DTM. Now he is leading Aston Martin, with Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll as his demanding owner.
9) Ayao Komatsu – net worth £650,000
Ayao Komatsu is one of the lower-paid F1 team principals ( Image: LAT Photo/Haas F1 Team)
Like Krack, Ayao Komatsu has worked in motorsport for much of his career. He started with BAR and Lotus before joining Haas in 2016 where he worked closely with Romain Grosjean.
The Japanese engineer was then promoted to become Guenther Steiner’s right-hand man. He then replaced Steiner as team principal when the Italian left earlier this year, though his salary will likely reflect the fact he works for one of F1’s poorer teams.
10) Bruno Famin – net worth £500,000
Bruno Famin took over Alpine on an interim basis in 2023 in what is his first job leading an F1 team. He was previously director of Peugeot Sport and initially joined Alpine in 2022 as CEO in charge of engine development.

Toto Wolff launches personal attack after Lewis Hamilton comment – ‘Rules got broken’
Toto Wolff has doubled down on his stance following the controversial Abu Dhabi GP in 2021.

Toto Wolff launched a scathing attack on Michael Masi by branding the sacked FIA chief an ‘egomaniac’ following the controversial 2021 Formula One title decider in Abu Dhabi. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton missed out on the world championship title in dramatic fashion, following a controversial last-lap overtake from fierce rival Max Verstappen.

Max Verstappen ‘plays Lewis Hamilton mind games’ as Toto Wolff U-turns
It remains one of the most memorable moments in the sport’s history. Hamilton and Verstappen entered the final race of the 2021 campaign locked on points, but after a stellar showing on the Yas Marina Circuit, it looked as if the Brit was set for his eighth world championship win. That all changed in the dying moment of the contest, with the race director Michael Masi calling a halt to proceedings after a Nicholas Latifi crash forced a safety car onto the track.
Not that anyone of a Mercedes persuasion needs reminding, but after the race restarted, Hamilton lost what had previously looked to be an unassailable lead, with Verstappen snatching the championship title away from his grasp. And while reciting his memories of the day for the book ‘The Formula’, Wolff remains adamant that race director Masi didn’t adhere to the rules in Abu Dhabi.
On the incident, the Mercedes team principal said: “When I think back, it is very unfair what happened to Lewis and the team on that day. That individual did not follow the rules and allowed it all to happen. He is a completely unimportant person: he lives on the other side of the world and no one is interested in him. He was really a pathological egomaniac.”

He added: “It’s drama and glory. That’s what makes the sport so irresistible. Everyone saw the drama that an eight-time world champion…they took the title away from him. I would have preferred to see it end differently, but there’s no denying that the race has left its mark on history.”
It’s a sentiment shared by the day’s main protagonist Hamilton, who recently admitted it still stings whenever he sees a clip of the fateful last lap. But unlike Woff, Hamilton has revealed he’s made peace with the incident. He told GQ: “Was I robbed? Obviously. I mean, you know the story.

“And I obviously went to congratulate Max [after the race], and not realising the impact that would have, but also I was really conscious of, like, there’s a mini-me watching. This is the defining moment of my life. And I think it really was. I felt it.
“I didn’t know how it was going to be perceived. I hadn’t, like, visualised it. But I was definitely conscious of: these next 50 metres that I walk is where I fall to the ground and die – or I rise up. If I see a clip of [the race], I still feel it. But I’m at peace with it [now].”

EPL: Guardiola angry over Haaland’s ‘refusal’ to take penalty kick
But Guardiola yelled from the sidelines for the 22-year-old Haaland to take the penalty kick they had been awarded in the closing minutes.

Haaland and Guardiola
Amagnanimous gesture by Manchester City’s goal machine Erling Haaland left Pep Guardiola fuming on Saturday.
PauseUnmute
Fullscreen
This was after the Norwegian striker ignored his manager’s instructions to take a penalty kick and handed the ball to teammate Ilkay Gundogan.
The German midfielder had scored a first-half brace to put the English Premier League leaders 2-0 up against Leeds United.
But Mr Guardiola yelled from the sidelines for the 22-year-old Haaland to take the penalty kick they had been awarded in the closing minutes.
However, Haaland, who has already scored a Premier League single-season record of 35 goals, glanced at Guardiola before handing the ball to Gundogan for him to complete a hat-trick.
It was a move that sent the Spanish manager into fits of rage, especially as Gundogan’s effort was pushed aside by a diving goalkeeper Joel Robles.
“If Gundo scores, everyone is ‘OK, hat-trick, well done’,” Guardiola said following Manchester City’s 2-1 victory.
“But a taker is a taker. At 2-0, this is a business, not a situation where we cannot forget it.”
The 32-year-old Gundogan felt the heat from Guardiola when he stepped up to the penalty kick spot.
“First he showed to Erling that he was quite mad about that, and then also he had a go at me,” Gundogan told reporters. “It is what it is at the end.
“The moment Erling grabbed the ball, I was sure he was going to take it but he looked out for me.
“I checked with him a few times to make sure he was sure. He was certain to hand the ball to me. I was confident to score.”
Haaland had several excellent scoring chances, with a shot that bounced off the crossbar and another that glanced off the post.
With Manchester City in pursuit of their third successive Premier League title, and the win having extended their lead over second-placed Arsenal to four points, Mr Guardiola’s mood somewhat later improved.
“The performance was excellent. We played really, really good,” the Spaniard, whose side have four league games left this season, said by the time he met reporters post-game.
“Who knows if Erling takes the penalty kick and misses it? What happens if Gundo takes the penalty kick and scores? So, the question is 2-0, who is the taker? The taker is Erling.
“Second point is that is how Erling is as a person. He is incredible, wants to score goals, but at the same time, the team, and the mates are important.
“He had chances to score goals, he didn’t convert, but he played an outstanding game.
“But a taker is a taker. At 2-0, this is a business, not a situation where we cannot forget it.
“Especially in England, it never is over and I want the taker who has more routine, who is a specialist, to take it.”
Treble-chasing Manchester City next head to Real Madrid for the first leg of their 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League semi-final fixture on Tuesday.

Supercomputer predicts final Premier League table after Man City Arsenal draw

Manchester City and Arsenal played to a draw in their weekend fixture, allowing Liverpool to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League.
The Reds had slipped behind Arsenal after their 1-1 draw at home against Manchester City, but they have now regained their position at the summit.
With several games still to be played, it’s likely that there will be further changes at the top of the league table before the season concludes.
Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City all have crucial matches remaining, making it difficult to predict who will ultimately be crowned champions.
However, in light of recent results for the clubs in the title race, a supercomputer has generated predictions for the final standings.
According to The Sun, the supercomputer forecasts that the champions of England will accumulate 87 points, with Liverpool emerging as the victors.
Arsenal is projected to closely follow the Reds with 86 points, while Manchester City is predicted to finish third in the standings with 84 points.
Just Arsenal Opinion
These are just predictions and they are not always accurate, so we need to focus on working hard on the pitch and remaining unbeaten while winning games.
Time will tell who will be champions, but if we win all our remaining games, we might have enough points to move back to the top of the standings and stay there until the campaign finishes.
ADMIN COMMENT
So here are some simple rules which I must insist commenters follow….
You agree not to give any personal abuse to other Arsenal fans. Everyone is allowed to hold their own opinions even if you disagree with them. It COSTS NOTHING TO BE POLITE TO OTHER ARSENAL FANS.

So this “supercomputer” 🤣👀 thinks Liverpool will get only 20 points from the 27 avbl in the next 9 games? And they’ll win the EPL with that?
Maybe. But I’ll be surprised if that’s how it works out.

‘Not possible’… Pep Guardiola shares why player who is ‘better’ than Declan Rice had to leave Man City in 2017
Tue 2 April 2024 19:30
James Thompson
Pep Guardiola has shared the reason why one former Manchester City player had to leave the club.
Since the Spaniard was appointed as City’s manager back in 2016, many players have made moves in and out of the club.
Now though, with the 53-year-old in the midst of his eighth season in charge of the Blues, he has shared some behind-the-scenes details on why one former City figure was moved on.

Speaking in his latest press conference ahead of tomorrow’s match against Aston Villa, Guardiola had this to say about why Douglas Luiz was moved out of the club instead of becoming part of the senior squad.
He said: “Because of a [lack of] work permit, it was not possible [for him] to be with us. He had to make steps so he went [on loan] to Girona and now he’s settled perfectly at Villa, so I’m happy for him.”

Back in the 2017 summer transfer window, City signed the midfielder from Vasco De Gama on a five-year deal when he was at the age of 19.
After spending two years on loan at Girona, the Brazilian was sold to Villa in the 2019 summer transfer window in a deal worth £15m.
Since then, the midfielder, who Jermaine Pennant said is better than Declan Rice back in December, has gone on to make 194 appearances for Unai Emery’s side across all competitions, scoring 22 goals and supplying 24 assists along the way.
Having featured in all but one of Villa’s games in all competitions this season, this highlights how much of an important player the 25-year-old is for his current side.
Now that Guardiola has shared why Luiz was unable to stay at City in addition to how pleased that he is now a key figure at Villa, this showcases how an unfortunate spell as a City player eventually ended up positively for the midfielder.
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s game between the two sides, it will be interesting to see how the Brazil international fares playing against the side that initially brought him to England.
