Liverpool to snub Xabi Alonso and make ‘surprise’ managerial appointment – after significant change at Anfield: report

Liverpool could be set to cool their interest in Xabi Alonso, as a recent change at the club might make them look elsewhere

Liverpool could make a shock managerial appointment in the coming months that doesn’t involve Xabi Alonso, due to a new development at Anfield in recent weeks.

Xabi Alonso has been heavily linked to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool since the German manager announced his decision to leave the club in January, and a move has seemed nailed on for the last month or so now.

That might not happen, however, now that former sporting director Michael Edwards is back in a position of power at Anfield. Liverpool’s owners FSG appointed Edwards FSG’s CEO of football earlier this month, which will see him move into a more overarching position at the club where his remit will extend to overseeing the ownership’s purchase of another team.

Liverpool target Xabi Alonso of Bayer 04 Leverkusen looks on prior to the Bundesliga match between Sport-Club Freiburg and Bayer 04 Leverkusen at Europa-Park Stadion on March 17, 2024 in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.

Having previously had a huge influence on signings at the club during his time as sporting director between 2016 and 2022 – such as the deals for Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson – a new report suggests that Edwards could have a similar impact in their hunt for the next manager.

LATEST VIDEOS FROM FOURFOURTWO
Indeed, according to ESPN’s Mark Ogden, Edwards might decide to make an unexpected appointment due to his contacts within football, therefore rejecting the idea of Xabi Alonso as the next Liverpool boss.

“I’ve been told that he’s one of the most connected people in the game. He knows the players that are coming through, the coaches that are coming through. He can pick up a call to this guy, to that guy,” he said.

“He knows six months before everybody else who the players are and who the coaches are. Which is why I think that he’ll pull a rabbit out of the hat with the next coach and it will be a surprise, it won’t be Xabi Alonso.

“We’ll wait and see, but I think Edwards is very key to this in the sense that he is the guy who Liverpool have brought back because they know he’s good. They know he’s the best in the world at what he does.”

Richard Keys says 42-year-old has now agreed to become Liverpool’s next manager after Jurgen Klopp

Richard Keys has claimed that he has information that Xabi Alonso has decided on whether he wants to become the new Liverpool manager this summer, as the Reds prepare to say goodbye to Jürgen Klopp.

Of course, the Liverpool job is one of the most exciting opportunities in world football. And Jurgen Klopp‘s successor will have the luxury of taking over a team which has challenged for the Premier League title this season.

Nevertheless, it is going to be a monumental task for the German’s successor. Klopp has done unbelievably to add his name to the list of legendary managers who have patrolled the touchline at Anfield.

Boss has reportedly agreed to become Liverpool’s next manager
So there may be some managers who have real reservations about stepping into such a prominent role so soon after Klopp. But perhaps one name has decided that he is ready for the challenge.

Alonso played under some of the world’s greatest managers. And he has that connection with Merseyside after enjoying a very successful spell with the Reds.

It has been suggested that Liverpool may spring a surprise and not go for Alonso. But writing on his blog, Richard Keys has claimed that he has been informed that the 42-year-old – who he previously tipped for the Manchester United role as a successor to Erik ten Hag – is ready to take the job.

Liverpool are monitoring Xabi Alonso as he continues to win admirers for his work with Bayer Leverkusen. Leverkusen are on course to win the Bundesliga title this season.

“Deschamps? Yes. Zidane? Yes. I was laughed out of court at the back end of last year when I said they should go and get Alonso – agree a deal with his ‘people’ and guarantee him five years to get it right,” he wrote.

“My critics said ‘No. what’s he done? It’s too soon’. Really? Well 3 months on it’s not too soon for Liverpool to have got him to agree to become their next manager. As I always say when I share news like this – these big deals can always go wrong. There’s a lot to go wrong when they’re blue riband, whether it’s a player or coach/manager involved, but my information is that Alonso has decided on Liverpool.

“If I’m a Liverpool fan – that excites me. What United have got to do is better that appointment. Would Southgate turning up at OT do that?”

Smart choice if Xabi Alonso is heading back to Anfield
Alonso would be a smart choice for the Liverpool hierarchy. It makes sense to appoint someone who will have the fans onside when Klopp steps aside.

And Alonso will have that admiration from the supporters.

Of course, he will have to be able to back it up. But his work this season suggests that he does have many of the tools needed.

Kyle Walker says he has never seen anyone pass the ball like one Liverpool player, insisting that he has improved so much in the last few years.

Of course, no team has been a greater rival to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City than Liverpool. The Reds have won one league title, and have been agonisingly close to winning a couple more.

Of course, no team has been a greater rival to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City than Liverpool. The Reds have won one league title, and have been agonisingly close to winning a couple more.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have had several absolutely incredible players in their ranks over the year. Mohamed Salah is undoubtedly one of the greatest the Premier League has had. Meanwhile Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk are unquestionably amongst the best the league has had in their respective positions.

Kyle Walker amazed by how much Liverpool star has improved
But another superstar in the Liverpool side is Trent Alexander-Arnold. The 25-year-old has played his part in the full-back role being redefined in recent years.

Remarkably, Alexander-Arnold has been directly involved in exactly 100 goals in 302 appearances for the Reds in all competitions.

Another outstanding right-back in the same era has been Kyle Walker. And speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, the Manchester City star shared what he finds so impressive about his Liverpool counterpart.

“Trent is a quarterback at right-back. I’ve never seen anyone pass the ball like it. Left, right foot, snow on it when it needs to have snow on it, or ping straight to the chest,” he said.

“The way Liverpool play where it’s very transitional, German manager, it’s a process to get up to the goal [for us], but Liverpool are very direct with their football. I’m not saying it’s a long ball team. But when you’ve got Salah on the right-hand side and you’re whipping that ball down his right-hand side, that’s what Trent’s very, very good at.

“I think people come at him for defending. But people can come at me for my crossing. Let’s just say that. I don’t think anyone’s going to really have the finished article. I think he’s improved massively on his defending, I think it comes with age as well.”

Reds getting the very best out of Trent Alexander-Arnold
It does appear that something has clicked for Alexander-Arnold over the last couple of years. He has been given more freedom to focus on what impact he can make further up the pitch.

He has contributed 10 assists in all competitions this season.

It makes sense to try and play to his strengths. Yes, he is not as good defensively as Walker or Ben White at Arsenal. But he more than makes up for it at the other end of the pitch.

As Walker notes, there are few better at passing the ball and making things happen in the final third.

Liverpool have been reportedly scouting Teun Koopmeiners ahead of the summer window.

Fabrizio Romano now claims, however, that the Reds are not considered the favourites to land his signature amid interest from Juventus.

“Juventus are the favourites to sign Teun Koopmeiners as he has been their top target for a long time, they want him and the relationship with Atalanta is very good,” the Guardian reporter told CaughtOffside.

“Liverpool have been scouting him but again, a lot will depend on the decision on who will replace Jurgen Klopp as manager – it’s too early to mention Liverpool’s plans without a decision on the manager.”

The Merseysiders are understood to be in the market chiefly for defensive reinforcements. Bolstering the forward line, particularly in the possible event of Mo Salah’s departure, would be the next priority.

Liverpool will get a look up close
Having since drawn Atalanta in the Europa League quarter-finals, we’re due to get a closer look at the versatile midfielder.

The 26-year-old has been prolific from the middle of the park this term, amassing 16 goal contributions in 34 games.

It’s worth bearing in mind Koopmeiners’ age, of course, given our recruitment team’s preference to bring in signings under 25.

A quality showing against us in Europe, of course, could twig a few brows in the data department ahead of the summer.

Bayern Munich and Germany star Leroy Sane has been linked with a potential return to Manchester City this summer, four years after quitting the club for the Bundesliga.

The 28-year-old left Manchester City for Bayern Munich in a £54.8 million move in July 2020, leaving the Etihad Stadium after four years, having initially moved to the Premier League for £37 million from Schalke.

The forward made 135 appearances and won seven trophies with the Sky Blues, but featured just twice during his final campaign at Manchester City after suffering an ACL injury against Liverpool in the FA Community Shield.

Sane scored 39 goals and helped Pep Guardiola’s side to two Premier League titles, memorably scoring the winning goal against Liverpool in a crucial 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium in January 2019.

The German international made his Manchester City debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford in September 2016, and also featured against the Blues in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals last season.

Sane has been directly involved in 19 goals in 25 Bundesliga appearances so far this season, and has also featured in eight Champions League matches for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

The winger is out of contract at the Allianz Arena in 2025, and is one of several players linked with a potential summer exit from Bavaria.

According to the information of Manchester City insider ‘Tolmie’s Hairdoo’ on X, the 28-year-old is interested in a potential return to the Etihad Stadium this summer, with the forward wanting to ‘come home’ after four years in Germany.

The forward is the third Bayern Munich star to be linked with a move to east Manchester ahead of the new season, with both Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala widely reported as possible targets.

Manchester City are expected to bolster their squad again this summer, with the both Bernardo Silva and goalkeeper Stefan Ortega linked with possible exits from the club.

The 2024/25 campaign is also currently set to be Pep Guardiola and Kevin De Bruyne’s last with the club, with both out of contract at the end of next season.
