Full Liverpool squad to face Man Utd – as eight players out and one doubt for FA Cup tie

Liverpool’s squad warm-up
Liverpool bid to reach the FA Cup semi-finals when they make the trip to Manchester United (15.30 GMT).

The Reds can take another step closer to winning four trophies this season, with an exciting finale in store. Last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City leaves Jurgen Klopp’s side second in the Premier League table only on goal difference. Meanwhile, they eased into the Europa League last eight earlier this week with an 11-2 aggregate victory over Sparta Prague.

Liverpool will be favourites against United at Old Trafford given the balance of power that has shifted. The Red Devils have been unable to restore their position to the Premier League elite and sit just sixth in the table.

However, United held Liverpool to a goalless stalemate at Anfield in December and they cannot be underestimated. What’s more, Klopp’s men continue to have injury issues.

The Liverpool manager has confirmed that Curtis Jones (ankle), Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota (both knee) are making progress but won’t be back until after the international break when speaking at his pre-match press conference. Meanwhile, Stefan Bajcetic – who has been limited to only two appearances this season – is expected to be back in team training following the hiatus of the campaign.

No.1 goalkeeper Alisson Becker remains sidelined with a ‘serious’ hamstring injury. There is also doubt whether Thiago Alcantara (hip) and Joel Matip (knee) may play again this term while Ben Doak continues his comeback from knee surgery he had in December.

What’s more, Klopp is expected Ibrahima Konate to again be absent against United. The centre-back has missed the previous two games. Liverpool were set to assess Konate’s fitness again.

But Ryan Gravenberch, who has been sidelined since suffering ankle ligament damage in the Carabao Cup final victory over Chelsea last month, is back in training and expected to be on the bench.

Potential Liverpool players available against Man Utd
Goalkeepers: Kelleher, Adrian, Mrozek.

Defenders: Bradley, van Dijk, Gomez, Quansah, Konate, Nallo, Robertson, Tsimikas.

Midfielders: Endo, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Elliott, Gravenberch, Clark, McConnell, Nyoni.

Forwards: Salah, Nunez, Gakpo, Diaz, Gordon, Musialowski.

WHAT HAPPENED?
Benzema was picked to start up front as Ittihad took on Uzbekistani side Navbahor in the second leg of their round of 16 tie on Thursday. The first game ended in a 0-0 draw but Benzema inadvertently gave Navbahor the lead in the second by sending a header beyond his own goalkeeper at a set-piece. Ittihad, though, recovered, as a strike from Abderrazak Hamdallah and a Toma Tabatadze own goal gave them a vital win.

It has been reported that Benzema is currently unhappy at Ittihad and he was linked with a shock move within the Saudi league, to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr, in the January transfer window. The former Real Madrid star was also linked with Manchester United, although the Red Devils quickly distanced themselves from those rumours.

WHAT NEXT FOR BENZEMA?
Once Thursday’s AFC Champions League tie is finished, Benzema will gear up for this weekend’s clash with Al-Wehda. They are currently fifth in the Saudi Pro League, a massive 22 points off leaders Al-Hilal.

Liverpool owners FSG explore buying MLS club – Exclusive..

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are exploring the possibility of buying an MLS club, sources have told Football Insider.

The US-based owners have already said they want to develop a multi-club network that can enhance their ownership of the Premier League giants.

It is understood that FSG believe there is a big gap in the US market, where a European sporting approach can be introduce to an American franchise.

Traditionally the MLS clubs’ strong areas are athleticism and data-based knowledge but they lag behind European elite clubs in terms of coaching and player development.

FSG are already stakeholders in Liverpool, the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Penguins and Nascar’s RFK Racing – they are now looking to expand their sporting portfolio into the MLS as well as buying clubs in other regions.

Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Man City are part of the City Football Group investment portfolio, which also owns New York City FC, while Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke’s holding company also includes the Colorado Rapids.

News of a potential takeover deal follows the announcement that FSG have struck a deal with Michael Edwards to return to Liverpool in a football CEO role.

The 44-year-old left Liverpool in 2022 after 10 years with the club and he is set to return in June to oversee all football operations.

In his return statement, Edwards revealed one of his priorities will be enhancing FSG’s football club portfolio, and he is already laying the groundwork for the first multi-club ownership deal.

FSG could explore options for a majority takeover deal of an MLS club, but new rules introduced in 2021 mean minority investments upwards of £16million ($20million) are also allowed.

According to Sportico, the new rules were voted through as the MLS was “hoping to make minority sales easier, allowing owners to access capital.”

Opta supercomputer predicts Liverpool’s chances of winning Europa League

Liverpool faced little resistance in the last 16 of this season’s Europa League.

Having breezed through the group stage, the Reds set up a knockout tie with Sparta Prague and secured comfortable passage to the final eight after an 11-2 aggregate victory over the Czech champions.

The Reds now have their toughest test in the Europa League this season as they prepare to face Italian side Atalanta in the quarter-final – a team that Liverpool beat 5-0 and lost 2-0 to in the 2020/21 Champions League group stage.

If Jurgen Klopp’s men can dump out the Serie A side, a semi-final against either Benfica or Marseille awaits, with Liverpool handed the more favourable side of the draw.

Despite Liverpool being strong favourites in most people’s eyes for this year’s trophy, there are some extremely talented teams left in the competition.

Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen – who are unbeaten in 37 games this season – will face West Ham United, while Liverpool’s 2005 and 2007 Champions League final opponents Milan face Roma in another exciting quarter-final match-up.

Naturally, Opta have crunched the numbers for this season’s Europa League and fed them into the fabled supercomputer, with the Reds’ chances of winning the title having now been predicted.

According to the stat experts, Liverpool are undeniably the favourites for the tournament, with a 34.5% chance of winning the competition for the first time under Klopp.

They have a 73.5% chance of reaching the semis and a 56.5% chance of making the final – the highest percentages of any team remaining in this season’s Europa League.

Leverkusen are not too far behind with a 23.5% chance of winning the competition and a 44.9% chance of reaching the last two, where they could, of course, face Liverpool in the showpiece event in Dublin.

Mohamed Salah, Liverpool vs Sparta Prague
Milan are next favourites with a surprisingly low 13.9% chance of winning the trophy – the Italian side beat Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain in this year’s Champions League – while Benfica (7.8%), Atalanta (6.6%) and Roma (5.7%) have slim chances of being crowned champions.

Despite winning the Europa Conference League last season, West Ham have been given just a 4.3% chance of winning, with Marseille technically the underdogs with a mere 3.7% chance of glory.

Given Liverpool’s impressive performances this season and the fact that they would likely be among the favourites for the Champions League if they were in the competition, it’s unsurprising to see Klopp’s men given such good odds of lifting the trophy.

However, statistics are no guarantee of success, and Liverpool will be pushed all the way by some top tier European sides.

Ex-Liverpool coach sacked after 12 games in charge of Championship club

Former Liverpool Academy coach Neil Critchley has been relieved of his duties at Queens Park Rangers, just two months after being appointed by the Championship club.

Identified in December as a replacement for fellow ex-Liverpool employee Michael Beale, who left the second tier side for Rangers, Critchley won his first game in charge against Preston but has failed to secure a second victory in the 11 matches that have since followed.

QPR sat in the play-off places after Critchley’s one and only win as head coach but are now closer to the relegation zone than the top six, highlighting the drastic drop-off in performance levels. Such is the severity of this decline, the 44-year-old has now been sacked. His assistants Iain Brunskill and Mike Garrity, who have also previously served in roles at Liverpool, have also departed.

Critchley’s previous role within football came at Aston Villa, leaving his post as Blackpool boss last June to form part of Steven Gerrard’s backroom staff. His stay at the West Midlands club was short-lived, however, lasting only until October when Villa parted company with Gerrard.

Liverpool ‘unhappy’ with Premier League as 33-minute flight after Newcastle explained

Liverpool have reportedly cited the quick turnaround between Premier League and Champions League fixtures as their explanation for flying back from Newcastle on Saturday.

The Reds made the 33-minute flight back from the North East just hours after recording their second Premier League victory of 2023 as first half goals from Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo helped down Eddie Howe’s side and strengthen their prospects of finishing in the top-four.

However, the club has drawn criticism for choosing to make the 145-mile journey back to Merseyside via aircraft with the Premier League recently dedicating one of its game weeks to Green Football Weekend in a bid to raise awareness around climate issues.

But according to the Mirror, Anfield officials have cited the tight fixture schedule as the reasoning behind their decision, as Jurgen Klopp’s side host Real Madrid at Anfield on Tuesday in a repeat of the 2022 Champions League final.

The report claims that Liverpool “does factor in environmental concerns when making travel decisions, with distance and cost the other main considerations” and part of the decision-making process was down to Klopp wanting his players to be in the best possible shape for the mouthwatering clash against the Spanish champions.
