Liverpool are still assessing the fitness of defender Ibrahima Konate ahead of Sunday’s Premier League fixture with Manchester City at Anfield.
The centre-back was a 51st-minute withdrawal in the 5-1 Europa League victory over Sparta Prague on Thursday night, requiring on-field treatment before going off at Stadion Letna.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, Jürgen Klopp gave an update on the general state of his squad: “Yeah, fresh, Joe [Gomez] is fine – Ibou, I don’t know.
“Ibou was rather positive last night, he thought he made the right decision in the right moment saying it’s better I go [off]. But how we know, that doesn’t mean a lot unfortunately. He will get scanned, definitely, [but] so far I don’t have the results of that. All the others are fine.”
Asked about Mohamed Salah specifically following his return, he added: “Mo, there is nothing. He is fine.”

‘Outstanding’ sporting director would prefer to join Liverpool over anyone else this summer
Fri 8 March 2024 14:00
James Brooke
Liverpool appear to be getting closer to making some key appointments for the future.
As well as the ongoing search for a new manager, the Reds have been busy behind the scenes trying to secure a sporting director to oversee recruitment.
So far, the search has been kept relatively private. But having already tried to tempt him back once, it now looks possible that Liverpool are going to be able to hire celebrated former director Michael Edwards.
Edwards will seemingly be in a much more all-encompassing role than before if he does indeed return. That will mean that a sporting director is still needed. And recent reports have suggested that that man could be close associate of Edwards, Richard Hughes.
Hughes has just been announced to be leaving his role at Bournemouth at the end of the season. The 44-year-old apparently knows where he is heading next, with Roma joining Liverpool in their interest.
According to The Mirror today though, Hughes would prefer to move to Liverpool over anywhere else. Citing sources, they claim that Anfield is the former midfielder’s destination of choice this summer. However, any move could reportedly hinge of Edwards’ employment.
Hughes leaning towards Liverpool
Rewind several weeks, and plenty of Liverpool supporters will have never even heard of Richard Hughes. But from what has emerged in recent days, he sounds like he might be a good fit at Anfield.
Anyone who is close to and appreciated by Edwards is worth taking a look at. The former Liverpool analyst is one of the most respected voices in the game when it comes to recruitment.
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
The warm words said about Hughes upon his exit from Bournemouth have also painted the picture of a man who’s very good at his job.
Cherries owner Bill Foley called his service to the club ‘outstanding’ in a glowing tribute on afcb.co.uk.
It seems like he may be ready to make that step up to Liverpool.
Richard Hughes
If Hughes were making that journey alone and as the main man, then there might still be some concern amongst the fanbase.
He may have done a great job at Bournemouth, but Liverpool is a different remit entirely. It’s a big jump to make. But with Edwards by his side, there would be faith from supporters that Hughes will be guided by a man who’s been there and done it.
There are a number of similar jobs opening up in the Premier League and across Europe at the moment. But with Edwards potentially at the helm and a new project to get stuck into, it’s no surprise that Liverpool is the most attractive.
With the end of the season in sight, this should all be wrapped up very soon. Unless anything comes out of the blue, it looks like Edwards and Hughes could be Liverpool’s new dream team.

‘Everyone saw it’ – Czech media agrees on Liverpool ‘lesson’ after Sparta Prague thrashing
Liverpool beat Sparta Prague 5-1 in the Czech Republic to all but secure its place in the Europa League quarter-finals, with Czech media in agreement on the Reds.

Liverpool secured a dominant 5-1 victory against Sparta Prague in the first leg of its Europa League last-16 tie, leaving a lasting impression on the Czech locals.
The Reds already look to have their place in the quarter-finals wrapped up ahead of the second leg at Anfield next week. A Darwin Núñez double plus goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Luis Díaz and Dominik Szoboszlai have put Liverpool in a commanding position that should prove too great to overturn.
Sparta boss Brian Priske acknowledged the significant gap between Liverpool and his team when giving his thoughts on the game at full-time. It’s a sentiment shared by the Czech media.

Tabloid Blesk described the match as an “unforgettable” spectacle, praising Liverpool’s performance: “Football in Klopp’s rhythm, a sea of chances, shots (thirty-two in total), six goals. Letná experienced an unforgettable match. Why not, after all, Liverpool arrived led by a legendary German coach. It was fun, a show, but… Sparta lost the first match of the round of 16 of the Europa League at home 1:5, and advancing to the top eight participants in the competition is a utopia.
“Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Núñez. Did Liverpool come to Prague with a second set? Don’t be laughed at. The team led by Jürgen Klopp arrived for success and threw themselves into it.
“It must be said that Sparta accepted open combat. This resulted in a high score difference. The quality in the finish is on a completely different level. Everyone saw it. That’s probably why the team’s fans sang the Svěrák song:'”It doesn’t have to be happy, especially it shouldn’t be sad, let alone cry…'”
IDNES Sport commented: “This is how goals are scored, gentlemen. A lesson in efficiency, the Spartans agreed after the debacle. The immediate reactions of the home team after the 1:5 defeat were in a similar vein.”
“A lesson in productivity, efficiency,” Zeleny and Lukas Haraslin agreed. “The Spartans knew they didn’t have to lose by such a big margin. And that they had opportunities to put a different number on their scoreboard.”
Lidovky presented a gallery with the headline ‘The Spartans were not good enough for the giant. They caught a wild boar from Liverpool.’
Sparta Prague’s official website simply remarked: “We leave the UEFA Europa League round of 16 match at Letna with a defeat. The fate of the match was decided in the first half, in which Liverpool taught us a lesson in productivity.
“Spartans took a breath with a quick goal after the change of sides, but two more goals by the players in white jerseys prevented us from achieving a better result. The return leg at Anfield is scheduled for next Thursday.”
Liverpool.com says: There isn’t too much you can say in response to Liverpool when the Reds are as ruthless as they were last night. Although Sparta had some good chances in the first half, the gulf in class was clear to see.
Sparta did show though that they won’t back down, which should at least make next week’s second leg a good game to watch. We already know though who’s going through to the quarter-finals.

Liverpool took a confident stride towards the Europa League quarter-finals with a comprehensive success at Sparta Prague on Thursday.
Alexis Mac Allister’s early penalty was followed in the first half by a Darwin Nunez double before goals after the break from Luis Diaz and Dominik Szoboszlai saw the Reds cruise to a 5-1 victory. The result means Jurgen Klopp’s men have still only lost four times in all competitions this season and remain in the hunt for a quadruple.
But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at the Epet Arena.

Nunez may have been substituted shortly after the interval but that was still plenty of time for the Liverpool player to make a devastating impact on the game.
And, after scoring his second and Liverpool’s third of the night, it appeared some Sparta fans were keen on making an impact on Nunez himself. As he celebrated towards the corner flag, the Uruguayan was targeted by some missiles from crowd, one of which appeared to be a drinks container that glanced his shirt.
The referee had a word with Nunez immediately afterwards, much to the striker’s bemusement. Maybe the home supporters thought the forward was simply thirsty after all his hard work.
Klopp’s transfer vacation
Any keen observer of post-match press conferences against teams outside the supposed top tier of European clubs – okay, it’s a pretty niche group – would have seen the question coming a mile off.
And sure enough, a local Prague journalist asked Klopp whether there were any players from Sparta worthy of signing, to which the Liverpool boss had a clipped response.
“I retire in the summer,” he said, referring to his imminent Anfield exit. “Do I need to take him holiday?”
Grateful Sparta
As was the case throughout the Europa League group stage, the arrival of Liverpool in town was kind of a big deal for Sparta Prague.

Indeed, after the press conference was finished, members of the staff at the stadium, including the glamorous media assistant who was handing out the microphone to the assembled hacks, were lining up to have their photo taken with Jurgen Klopp before the Reds squad dashed to the airport.
And the manner in which some of the Czechia scribes were delighted to have the opportunity to ask a question of Klopp spoke volumes. Pretty sure Sparta boss Brian Priske isn’t treated with quite such reverence.
No stopping for Szoboszlai
The promise of the first half for Sparta may have not materialised into anything substantially tangible, but nothing was going to stop their fans having a party.
That could be evidenced during injury time when the home support chanted their backing for the team as Szoboszlai cracked in Liverpool’s fifth with the last kick of the game.
Sparta’s following, though, carried on regardless as if nothing had happened. Expect them to be at full voice throughout the Anfield return next Thursday.

Christian Falk has revealed what Xabi Alonso’s agent did ‘immediately’ after he received contact from Liverpool regarding the Bayer Leverkusen manager.
The Reds are currently vying with Bayern Munich for the services of the 42-year-old, with both six-time European champions on the lookout for new coaches for next season amid the impending departures of Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel.
In his exclusive Fact Files column for CaughtOffside, the German football reporter pointed out how Alonso’s representative responded to the approaches from the Spaniard’s two main suitors.
FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE
Falk outlined: “Xabi Alonso is still Munich’s dream coach. But – despite many reports – there were still no negotiations between Bayern and Alonso.
“What speaks for it: When Liverpool contacted Iñaki Ibáñez, Alonso’s agent, the agent immediately communicated the Reds’ interest to those in charge at Leverkusen. That didn’t happen in the case of Bayern.
“FC Bayern is still waiting for a signal from Alonso as to whether he can imagine a move to Munich. As soon as that happens, they would start negotiations.”
READ MORE: Jurgen Klopp has told Liverpool fans the best is still to come from ‘wonderful’ Reds player

When it was reported by Sky Germany earlier this week that Bayern had opened discussions with Alonso, that seemed to represent a hammer blow to Liverpool’s hopes of hiring the club’s former midfielder.
However, Falk’s update suggests that the Munich giants aren’t that far along in proceedings, and that Ibanez may even have given the Merseysiders a slight edge, given how he instantly communicated LFC’s interest to the Leverkusen board but didn’t do so for the Bavarian outfit.
Considering the plethora of reports which emerge every day about the 42-year-old’s future, and which prospective suitor appears to have the upper hand, ascertaining the truth can be a matter of judging between the various news lines being communicated.
What offers encouragement for Liverpool fans in this instance is Falk’s status as one of the most reliable reporters in German football.
It’s still far too early to jump to any great conclusions that Alonso will definitely be coming back to Anfield, but for now we can still remain positive that it could be a viable possibility.

Liverpool Sweating on Fitness of Ibrahima Konate vs Man City
BY
MATT SMITH

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate was substituted against Sparta Prague in the week, and Jurgen Klopp has provided an update on his fitness.

HIGHLIGHTS
Ibrahima Konate’s injury status is uncertain after needing treatment against Sparta Prague, which could be a blow for Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp has confirmed his worries about Konate, but it’s positive news for Joe Gomez.
Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah have returned to action, providing a boost to Liverpool’s attacking options as they prepare for a key game against Man City.
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate was substituted against Sparta Prague in the Europa League this week, and Jurgen Klopp has provided a worrying update ahead of their Premier League clash with Manchester City on Sunday.
Klopp has been forced to deal with a host of injury problems over the last few weeks, but he’s started to see a positive trend in terms of fitness. Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah have both returned to action, but it now looks like Konate has a chance of spending some time on the treatment table.
Jurgen Klopp Provides Konate Update
Konate Required Treatment Against Sparta Prague
The Reds secured an impressive 5-1 victory in the first leg of their Europa League tie with Sparta Prague, with the likes of Nunez and Salah given a chance to build up their fitness. Konate went down requiring treatment in the second half before being substituted, and Klopp has now provided an update on his fitness…
“We don’t know [yet]. Ibou said to me when he passed me in that moment, ‘I thought if I do another sprint then it could be bad.’ So, he said he should be fine, but we don’t know. Joey [Joe Gomez] is fine. We took him off, he played a lot of games so that was more rotation, precaution. Now let’s see what is with Ibou.”
With Joel Matip already unavailable, losing Konate ahead of a crucial game in the title race would be a major blow for the Merseyside club. It’s a short turnaround before their next fixture, so Klopp will be desperate for his injury to settle down in time for the Man City clash.
GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Ibrahima Konate has missed 19 games through injury since signing for Liverpool in 2021.
Thankfully for Klopp, it appears that Joe Gomez will be fit enough to play, while Jarell Quansah completed 90 minutes against Sparta Prague. The German manager will have options if Konate is unavailable, but it would be a worrying blow nonetheless.

Szoboszlai, Nunez, and Salah returning
Salah and Nunez have been struggling with fitness issues over the last few weeks, but the key duo appear to be fit and firing once again. Against Sparta Prague, Nunez started the game and found the back of the net with two impressive strikes, while Salah came off the bench to get some minutes in his legs.
Dominik Szoboszlai returned against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League last week, and he was given another opportunity to rebuild his fitness against Sparta Prague, coming off the bench to score in the final seconds of the game. The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, Curtis Jones, and Ryan Gravenberch are still on the treatment table, but the situation is slowly improving at Anfield ahead of a crucial few months.

‘THEY ARE GOING TO LOSE’… CHRIS SUTTON HAS JUST PREDICTED LIVERPOOL VS MANCHESTER CITY WINNERS AT ANFIELD

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City will lock horns with each other at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday.
Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal are the three teams aiming to win the Premier League title this season.
Arsenal are third with 61 points from 27 matches. Defending champions City are second with 62 points, a point ahead of Liverpool, who are at the top.
Liverpool and City will face each other at Anfield on Sunday, and former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has backed the Reds to pick up all three points from the encounter.
Chris Sutton backs Liverpool to win vs Manchester City
Sutton told BBC Sport: “City are the Premier League champions, European champions and world champions… so who is going to write them off? I am. They are going to lose.
klopp guardiola
“I have a hunch that, with Liverpool being at home, they will have the slight edge and Mohamed Salah’s return from injury could make the difference for them in a very tight game.
“I will probably look stupid at full-time but I am going with ‘darling’ Darwin Nunez to score and the Reds to win.
“Sutton’s prediction: 2-1.”
My View: Match between Liverpool and Manchester City will end in a draw
In my opinion, the Premier League match between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield will end in a draw.
Both Liverpool and City are in good form. The Reds have won their last four league matches, while the Citizens have won four of their last five Premier League games.
Yes, the match is at Anfield, but the City players are used to playing in intimidating stadiums against a vociferous crowd.
I do not think that Pep Guardiola’s side will be affected by that. However, Liverpool have a very good team and are defensively strong.
Virgil van Dijk is back to his best now, and Joe Gomez is available. Mohamed Salah is also back, so I think that they will score against City and will not allow them to get more than one goal.

Darwin Nunez had a special message written on his boots as he scored two in Europa League demotion

In a dazzling Europa League showdown that saw Liverpool’s attacking prowess almost fully unleashed, it was Darwin Nunez who stole the headlines—not just for his scintillating brace against Sparta Prague but for the tender homage inked on his boots.
In a gesture that’s both personal and powerful, Nunez carried the name ‘Lorena’, his wife, on his boots as he carried Liverpool into the second leg of the Round of 16 with a more-than-healthy advantage.

Fans know it; love fuels passion.
And Nunez’s display was a testament to that adage.
The connection between heart and feet was evident as he propelled Liverpool to a commanding 5-1 victory in the Round of 16’s first leg, a step closer to European glory. It’s the stuff of Liverpool lore, where magic on the field intertwines with the narratives off it.
On a night where each goal felt like a beat in the heart of The Kop, Nunez’s tribute adds a layer of intimacy to the triumph. Here is a player who not only plays for the badge on his chest but does everything he does with passion.
While the world outside of Liverpool Football Club has found it necessary to constantly criticise Nunez, the Uruguayan has pretty much ignored all of it.
This season, he has 16 goals and 11 assists, including seven total goal contributions in his last seven games. He’s a man on form and that’s just what Liverpool need heading into the Manchester City showdown at Anfield on Sunday.

It’s a game that will hold a lot of sway in deciding who eventually lifts the 2023/24 Premier League table.
With Mohamed Salah back and both Nunez and Luis Diaz in form, Klopp will be hoping he can unleash the front three on Pep Guardiola’s side.

‘They could struggle’… David Seaman has just predicted the result of Liverpool vs Manchester City
Liverpool take on Manchester City this weekend in what could be the biggest game of the season, and David Seaman has just revealed his prediction.
The two rivals go head-to-head once again in a game that could decide this season’s Premier League champions. Liverpool are on top of the table, while Manchester City are second going into the game.
David Seman predicts the result of Liverpool vs Manchester City
Liverpool and Manchester City have been the most dominant sides in England over the last few years.
Pep Guardiola’s side have come out on top on all but one occasion, but the Reds have almost always pushed them to their limits.
On Sunday, Liverpool will go into the game as the Premier League leaders, but dropping points against City could prove costly.
A defeat would see the champions leapfrog them at the top of the table, while a draw would benefit Arsenal if they win their game against Brentford tomorrow.
David Seaman, a Gunners legend, appears to be hoping for that as he has predicted a 2-2 draw between Liverpool and Manchester City on Sunday.
He said on Seaman Says: “As long as Liverpool can get two or three of their main players back, then I think they’ve got a real good chance.
“But, if they go into a game like this with a lot of the kids, as Jurgen calls them, they could struggle because it’s a massive game.
“I’m going to go 2-2. I can see Liverpool giving City chances.”
Arsenal will be hoping for a draw
Arsenal could end up being the big winners this weekend when Liverpool host Manchester City.
The Gunners need to win their game against Brentford tomorrow. If they do, they will go to the top of the Premier League table.
A Liverpool win would be the worst outcome for the Gunners, while even though a Manchester City victory would not be ideal, it’s still not too bad for Mikel Arteta‘s side as they take on the champions at the end of this month.
The best outcome for Arsenal would be a draw, and we’re sure the Gunners will be hoping for that on Sunday.

A PREMIER league footballer clocked speeding on the M56 in Cheshire has been hit with a £3,610 court penalty.
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, of Alderley Edge, was caught speeding in a Bentley on the M56 in Warrington shortly after midnight on September 22, last year.
A camera clocked the 23-year-old Hungarian exceeding the 70mph speed limit on the eastbound carriageway of the motorway between junctions 11 and seven.
Chester magistrates found the case proved after listening to the evidence at an earlier hearing on December 21, last year.
Szoboszlai, who captains the Hungary national team, was sentenced on March 6 after the case had been adjourned on January 29, this year.
The defendant was fined £2,500 and ordered to pay £1,000 costs and £110 victim surcharge.
His driving licence was endorsed with six points.

Ibrahima Konate was forced off injured in Liverpool’s clash with Sparta Prague
However, Jurgen Klopp has claimed he thinks the defender ‘should be fine’
CHRIS SUTTON and IAN LADYMAN give their title predictions (finally!) – It’s All Kicking Off podcast
Ibrahima Konate’s injury is better than first feared, after the French defender’s premature exit from Liverpool’s win over Sparta Prague sparked concern that he would be another casualty for Sunday’s title tussle with Manchester City.
Konate asked to be substituted early in the second half of the 5-1 win, in which Darwin Nunez scored a first-half brace to add to Alexis Mac Allister, Luis Diaz and Dominik Szoboszlai goals in a thumping victory for the Reds.
He appeared to be holding his hamstring and in some discomfort as he walked off the field, causing many Liverpool fans to worry he would be another injury to add to their long list ahead of the visit of the Treble winners.
But Klopp played down those fears after the game, saying it was a precautionary move. ‘We don’t know,’ said the German when asked if Konate will be OK for the weekend. ‘Ibou said to me at the moment, ‘I thought if I do another sprint then it could be bad’.
‘So he said it should be fine but we don’t know.’ Joe Gomez was also substituted but that was a planned change, according to Klopp. ‘Joey is fine,’ he said. ‘We took him off because he played a lot of games, that was rotation.’

Klopp also waxed lyrical about two-goal Nunez, who was also the hero in Nottingham on Saturday with a 99th-minute winner. ‘He had absolutely more than OK first season but he had to adapt, that’s done, settled in the middle of the team,’ said Klopp on the Uruguayan.
‘Wonderful guy, wonderful boy, He loves to play for this team together with these bioys and has quality coming out of his ears to be honest. It’s like strikers are, they score and then they don’t score.
‘Is he at his absolute peak in general? Not now for us. But can he develop? Yes. Is he a threat all the time? Yes. He has the most important attitude a striker needs to have, he missed chances but all strikers are doing but he is not bothered by it and just keeps going.
‘That’s why he now has a nice number of goals, games to come, opportunities to come. When he’s not scoring he for us is incredibly important as he is a constant threat and gives us spaces in areas and options.’

Jurgen Klopp claims Liverpool ‘punishment’ as dressing room reaction explained
Liverpool punished Sparta Prague with a 5-1 Europa League victory to take a huge step into the Europa League quarter finals

Jurgen Klopp praised the ruthless manner in which Liverpool punished Sparta Prague’s “risky” approach as his team took a significant step towards the Europa League quarter-finals.
Two goals from Darwin Nunez, an Alexis Mac Allister penalty and second-half strikes from Luis Diaz and Dominik Szoboszlai earned the Reds a 5-1 win in their round of 16 first leg in Czechia on Thursday evening.
Sparta had caused Liverpool a number of problems during the first half in which Caoimhin Kelleher made several good stops, although they only found the target through an own goal by Reds substitute Conor Bradley shortly after the interval.

And when asked if the final scoreline was harsh on the home side, Klopp said: “Yes, the result is much better than the performance, that’s true. Sparta played a good game. Sparta took some risks in our possession, they (were) hiding wingers slightly (and) our protection was not good, so they could create these counter-attacks.

Darwin Nunez sends Man City strong message as Liverpool unleash new partnership
“We lost a few unnecessary balls, which is then difficult to protect, but in other moments we should have done better.
“We adapted during the game and we told the boys at half-time how we should do it, but then we conceded a goal immediately. But after that it was much better. It looked like two of their big chances were offside but Caoimhin made big saves, but that’s fine.
“They took risks and we punished them for that. In other moments we scored wonderful goals, we had really good moments in the game, and we weren’t thinking we’d come here and it would be a walk in the park. We didn’t expect an easy game and it wasn’t, but it was a good result.”
Liverpool, who entertain Sparta in the return leg next Thursday, remain in the hunt for an unprecedented trophy quadruple in Klopp’s last season in charge, although the manager dismissed the notion winning a farewell European prize has increased the incentive to lift the only major silverware he hasn’t claimed during his time at Anfield.
“It would be cool, but it has nothing to do with that,” said the Reds boss. “Last year when I stayed it would have been wonderful to win something but it was impossible.
“Nobody needs to worry about that. We try really hard and you could see that tonight, my team fought as well. It’s not like we were sloppy and we thought we could do it with 80%, not at all. We made mistakes, which is human, but we fought really hard.
“If you look at the dressing room afterwards, the boys felt the intensity of the game and are happy about the result.”

‘WORLD-CLASS…’ PAUL MERSON SAYS LIVERPOOL STAR IS ‘THE BEST RUNNER WITHOUT THE BALL IN THE WORLD’

Thu 7 March 2024 20:30, UK
A blockbuster Premier League title showdown awaits when Liverpool welcomes Manchester City to Anfield on Sunday.
With Liverpool leading the way at the top, you feel if there is a winner in this fixture, then it will provide them with a huge boost during this final title run-in.
Mohamed Salah has returned to action for the Reds and Paul Merson has claimed that, if he starts, then Liverpool will win the contest, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (06/03/24 at 7:10 pm).
Manchester City recorded a 3-1 win over Manchester United over the weekend, but it didn’t come after Marcus Rashford’s stunning long-range opener.
Just now and again, the away side were hitting the Treble winners on the counter and targeting those acres of space in-behind the defence.
But Man United didn’t have the quality to cause many issues, something Paul Merson thinks will change against Liverpool and Mohamed Salah.
The former Arsenal and Aston Villa player thinks the Egypt star is ‘world-class’ and ‘the best runner without the ball in the world’.
Will Mohamed Salah start for Liverpool against Manchester City?
“I am not saying it’s a one-man team, I just think he needs to play,” said Merson. “I just think he is world-class. He is one of the best players in the world.
“You look a Man City, one of their achilles heel is going to be down the left with Doku and Ake. I felt Ake fell asleep a couple of times against Man United – Salah is the best runner without the ball in the world. I think he will be a threat. I think if Salah plays, I just think they win, if he doesn’t, then I am not sure they win the game, but with him playing, then I would be quite shocked if they didn’t win.
“With Salah playing, it gives them the advantage to really go and press high. They all know when to press when Salah is playing, if he doesn’t play, then I think they drop off.
“I don’t think Diaz is going to be enough of a threat to cause Man City problems, you need more than that and I think with Salah playing you get that, then you have Diaz, Salah and Nunez. That’s when you look at it and think, I don’t know how Man City cope with them.”

Manchester City’s record at Anfield
Pep Guardiola has dominated wherever he has gone, but the Anfield stage is one where he has struggled to prove his worth.
The Spanish coach has only won once in Liverpool’s backyard during his time in the Premier League – and that was during the COVID season.
That point was highlighted by Jamie Carragher when he was aiming jibes at Micah Richards ahead of the weekend’s contest.
You feel it would be unbelievably huge if Man City, given their record, were to win at Liverpool because, regardless of what Arsenal do, it makes them instant favourites to become the first team to win four titles in a row.

We’ll take VAR’s word for it, but we have to admit the offside call to disallow Mo Salah’s cameo goal is rather dubious.
Screenshots of the incident shared online during Liverpool’s Europa League clash with Sparta Prague certainly indicate it was, at the very least, a particularly tight call.
Errrrrrr…. is that offside? pic.twitter.com/4e7siWRb41
— Empire of the Kop (@empireofthekop) March 7, 2024
We’re not quite sure if the VAR operators have based the lines on our Egyptian King or one of his teammates though.
He looks, in our view, to be just about onside.
Ah well. A 5-1 win it is in Prague, thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai’s late effort!

5 talking points from Liverpool’s 5-1 win vs Sparta Prague
Alex Caple
ALEX CAPLE
Liverpool beat Sparta Prague 5-1 in the first leg of their Europa League Last 16 meeting. Here are five talking points from the game.
ONE RISK TOO MANY?
Jurgen Klopp didn’t take too many chances with his starting XI. No abundance of kids here in what was a very strong team, but also one that didn’t risk fitness.
Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai both started on the bench, with Conor Bradley and Virgil van Dijk also out of the XI for once. It was a team that offered plenty of hints for the plan against Manchester City.

The downside? Ibrahima Konaté went off early in the second half, bringing Van Dijk on earlier than planned. We’ll see how that affects things at the weekend, though the Frenchman did walk off.
DARWIN NOTCHES NO.1000
Darwin Nunez put on a show here. He only played 49 minutes but managed to score two fantastic goals that essentially killed the tie.
The first saw him compoase himself before sending a swirling shot over the goalkeeper from the edge of the box. The second was a first-time finish to send a bouncing ball into the far corner from distance.
Just two moments of magic from a player in fantastic form.
His first was also notable for being the 1000th Liverpool goal under Jurgen Klopp – a historic one, then. A no better player to score it than someone who is epitomising the German’s style of play right now.
KELLEHER INCREDIBLE ONCE AGAIN
Caoimhin Kelleher has one of the most difficult tasks going in living up to Alisson Becker. He’s somehow doing it.
The Irishman came into this one on the back of three clean sheets and was bitterly unlucky not to make it four. His first-half save was world-class, and he then provided another brilliant stop to tip a dipping ball over the bar.
Jurgen Klopp has long said he’s the best no.2 goalkeeper in football. He’s certainly playing like that right now.
MUCH-NEEDED RESULT
Liverpool have some enormous games coming up. The big win here just eliminated one of them – the Reds can go into the second leg next week with a four-goal headstart.
That should allow plenty of rest ahead of the FA Cup clash with Manchester United before the international break. And it means Klopp and co. won’t be worrying about that fixture during the big one this Sunday.
A positive game all-around, then – except for that Konaté injury.
ONTO THE MAN CITY GAME
Liverpool’s attention now turns to Manchester City and the biggest game of the season this Sunday. A win would leave the Reds as title favourites.
They very nearly set themselves up perfectly here. Darwin Nunez got 49 minutes, Dominik Szoboszlai and Mo Salah both got second-half minutes, and they were able to rotate well in midfield across the 90 minutes.
Of course, the Konaté injury (we’ll mention it one more time) is an issue. If it turns out to be nothing, then this was exactly what Liverpool needed going into Sunday.
