Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp aims dig at £40m Tottenham ace before Burnley clash

LIVERPOOL BOSS JURGEN KLOPP AIMS DIG AT £40M TOTTENHAM ACE BEFORE BURNLEY CLASH

aimed a cheeky dig at Tottenham Hotspur playmaker James Maddison ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash with Vincent Kompany’s Burnley.

In the eyes of us mere mortals, the goal which secured Manchester City the Premier League title back in 2019 – Vincent Kompany lashing home one of the most iconic strikes in the competition’s history from miles out away to Leicester – was one of those moments where you just throw up your hands and admit there was nothing that could be done to prevent it.

Well, not according to Jurgen Klopp.

As far as the Liverpool manager is concerned, had James Maddison been a little more switched on to his defensive duties, Kompany would not have been invited to unleash that blockbuster, and the trophy may have been adorned with red rather than blue ribbons that season.

Jurgen Klopp goes up against Vincent Kompany again
“Yes, I forgave him that goal a long time (ago),” Klopp smiles, speaking to the Liverpool website ahead of Burnley’s trip to Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

“There are plenty of players I should hate. (Former Bayern Munich winger) Arjen Robben is one of them! But I don’t. Same as with Vincent Kompany.

“I believe there were other situations in that season where I thought they were more influential than Vincent Kompany’s goal. When I think about that situation, I still think Maddison should have blocked the shot!

“Vincent just tried to get rid of the ball, and it ended up in the goal! But no, absolutely, not that’s important. Yes, I forgave him, long ago.”

Liverpool aiming to stay top of the table
Maddison’s game, of course, has always been more about creating goals than stopping them. But Klopp does have a point, the then-Leicester talisman standing idly by as Kompany took aim.

Liverpool, at least, would end their three-decade wait for a top-flight crown just one year later. That remains their only Premier League success since the competition’s inception, however, with the long-serving German looking to sign off with another.

Liverpool remain two points clear of Manchester City and Arsenal despite losing 3-1 to the latter last time out.

Tottenham ‘attractive to young prospects’ after behind-scenes ‘changes’
BY
MATT SMITH
PUBLISHED 2 HOURS AGO
Tottenham Hotspur are now becoming an attractive prospect to young talents around the world after making some changes behind the scenes.

HIGHLIGHTS
Spurs’ focus on young talent is paying off, and the signing of Lucas Bergvall saw them beat off competition from Barcelona.
Despite not currently competing in Europe, Tottenham is still able to attract players due to their exciting style of football and commitment to promoting youth players.
The club’s scouting efforts are evident in their interest in players like Antonio Nusa and Ederson, showing their determination to strengthen their squad with promising talents.
Tottenham Hotspur are becoming an attractive prospect to young talents from around the world, and journalist Paul Brown has explained to GIVEMESPORT that something is changing at the north London club, with Ange Postecoglou wanting to promote youth players.

Under the tutelage of Postecoglou, Spurs appear to be heading in the right direction after a difficult few years. The supporters are buying into the ideas of the Australian tactician and the Lilywhites are producing a style of football that is exciting to watch. Naturally, players from around the world will like the idea of signing on the dotted line at Spurs, and the proof is in the pudding after securing Timo Werner, Radu Dragusin, and Lucas Bergvall in January despite interest from elsewhere.

The addition of Bergvall has been regarded as a bit of a coup from the north London outfit, especially after they were competing with Barcelona to acquire the young talent. It’s an exciting time for Spurs fans as they continue to attract players despite not even competing in Europe at the moment.

Tottenham’s focus on young talent
As mentioned, Spurs pushed to sign young talent Bergvall during the January transfer window. The Swedish midfielder met with Barcelona sporting director Deco just a few days before being officially announced as a new Tottenham player on his 18th birthday. Bergvall will remain with Allsvenskan club Djurgardens until the end of the season before linking up with his new teammates in the summer.

Spurs were also looking to secure the signature of Club Brugge forward Antonio Nusa in the winter, but failed to get a deal over the line. It looked as though he’d be on his way to fellow capital club Brentford, but a move failed to materialise. Nusa is another inexperienced, highly-rated talent who is playing regularly in Belgium despite being just 18 years old. It will be interesting to see whether the north London club enter the race once again in the summer transfer window.

As per TEAMtalk, Crystal Palace beat Tottenham in the race to sign Blackburn Rovers midfielder Adam Wharton. Considering the Eagles’ struggles in the Premier League this season, there’s a good chance the England youth international could push for a starting spot in Roy Hodgson’s side. With Spurs, it would have been tricky for Wharton to make an immediate impact, and considering he’s already shown his ability by performing exceptionally in the Championship this term, he clearly feels he can make the step up to England’s top flight.

Paul Brown – Something is changing at Spurs
Brown has suggested that something is changing at Spurs and the Lilywhites are planning for the long term with a manager, Postecoglou, who wants to promote youth in his squad. The journalist adds that the north London outfit have become an attractive prospect for young talent around the world due to the players being able to see a pathway to regular first-team football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Brown said…

“I think something is changing at Spurs. I think they are winning now and they are also planning for the long term with a manager who wants to promote youth. So I think it’s hugely impressive really that they’re able to sign players like that. I think it’s because they’ve made themselves attractive to young prospects who can see a route to the first team and a path to do well at a Premier League club.”

Tottenham scouting Ederson ahead of summer
Spurs failed to get a deal over the line for a new midfielder in the January transfer window to add another body in the middle of the park for the remainder of the season. The Independent suggested that Postecoglou and his recruitment team were looking for a ‘running midfielder’, with Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher the priority target. However, the England international stayed at Stamford Bridge, and it’s no surprise considering the impact he’s made under Mauricio Pochettino this campaign.

According to Sky Sports, Spurs were considering making a move to bring Atalanta midfielder Ederson to north London in the winter transfer window. A deal failed to come to fruition, but Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has told GIVEMESPORT that they are continuing to scout Ederson and could make an effort to secure his signature in the summer transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp calls up 18-year-old likened to Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Liverpool training

UK
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been putting his players through their paces ahead of their upcoming Premier League game on Saturday.

The Reds host Burnley in a 3pm kickoff at Anfield, and the Liverpool boss has had to deal with an injury crisis among his charges.

This week, Liverpool will be without Thiago Alcantara and Dominik Szoboszlai due to injury, while Ibrahima Konate is suspended and Conor Bradley is on compassionate leave.

That quartet have joined Kostas Tsimikas, Mohamed Salah, Stefan Bajcetic and Joel Matip on the sidelines.

Furthermore, Klopp admitted to the Liverpool media team on Friday that there’s a “little bit of a flu thing” doing the rounds among the Reds squad.

On Thursday, the Reds published photos from their latest training session at the time, and a number of academy players were spotted alongside the seniors.

Revealed: Liverpool set for astonishing £415m transfer boost under new Premier League rules
The transfer budget at Liverpool could be about to rocket to astonishing level

Liverpool would be free to spend a minimum of £415million in 2024/25 if new financial regulations are implemented, Football Insider can reveal.

All 20 Premier League clubs attended a meeting on Thursday evening to discuss replacing the current Profit and Sustainability rules.

The new regulations proposed would align with Uefa’s policy that caps spending to a percentage of the club’s overall revenue.

The cap includes spending on transfer fees, wages and agent fees and is expected to be limited to 85 percent of revenue for clubs outside of European competition – clubs competing within Europe will be capped at 70 percent.

As per the 2024 Deloitte Football Money League, Liverpool generated revenue of £593million over the last year – ranking them seventh in the world in terms of finances.

If the Premier League passes the vote to introduce new regulations, it would free up Liverpool to spend a staggering £415million based on their current revenue levels.

A majority of that budget would be taken up by their £261million wage bill, but that would still leave the Merseyside club with a significant transfer budget for new signings.

The Reds are currently on the lookout for a new manager following Jurgen Klopp’s announcement that he will leave Anfield at the end of the 2023-24 season.

The new manager chosen to replace Klopp could therefore be in line to inherit a huge transfer budget for the 2024/25 season if new Premier League regulations are passed.

Mohamed Salah’s new stance on Liverpool exit revealed with Saudi clubs preparing ‘massive’ offers

Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah is in no rush to move to Saudi Arabia and could now prolong his stay on Merseyside in what would be a huge boost for the club, sources have told Football Insider.

The Reds rejected a widely reported £150million bid last summer for Salah from Al-Ittihad, but Saudi clubs retain huge interest in the Egyptian and are planning massive offers going into the main transfer window at the end of the season.

Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that Salah wants to keep playing at the top level and challenge for football’s most prestigious honours.

What Virgil van Dijk and Jurgen Klopp did immediately after Arsenal defeat could prove invaluable for Liverpool

Liverpool will be looking to bounce back this weekend when hosting Burnley at Anfield.

The Reds were beaten on their travels to the capital last weekend, suffering a 3-1 loss at Arsenal, and will be eager to put things right on home soil against a side that has struggled upon their return to the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will recognise any dropped points at this stage of the season will be costly, particularly as Manchester City click into gear, ensuring three points is the requirement for Saturday’s fixture. Looking ahead to this upcoming clash, four Liverpool supporters have shared their views as part of a weekly ECHO fan column.

Rhys Buchanan (city centre, @Rhys_Buchanan) – Nothing has changed – Klopp knows there’s a big chance

Nothing changes for the Reds, as far as I’m concerned, after last weekend’s humbling defeat against an average and goal-shy Arsenal side. Looking back to the start of the season, any Liverpool fan would have ripped your hand off to be where we are now, albeit with Manchester City having a game in hand and healthily placed to take the advantage.

We need to get back to winning ways immediately against Burnley on Saturday to ensure we’re ready to take any chance we can get if either of our title race rivals slip up. Klopp will know that we have a big chance to go top if we beat City at Anfield next month, especially considering they still have to play Arsenal. Let’s put the points on the board and see where we end up.

Andrew Cullen (Widnes, @brothersred5) – There will be more twists – our emotion can make the difference

When Klopp announced his departure plans, some believed that this would disrupt Liverpool’s season. That, at least for now, has not happened. The emphatic victories against Norwich and Chelsea demonstrated a team galvanised by events, rather than jaded by them. This team will continue to stiffen the sinews for Klopp.

The performance against Chelsea was arguably our best of the season: it was full of fight and ferociousness. Levels unarguably dropped against Arsenal, though.

Arsenal wanted it more; they were more aggressive in their pressing, more dynamic in the play and more hungry for victory. The drop in performance may be explained by the return of some players from injury, who need time to synchronise back in, and those newer players who have not yet synthesised into the team.

Even with Manchester City now stalking the top position from the high grass, we remain in a healthy position. There will be further twists and turns in this race, further highs and lows for Liverpool and further consistent and inconsistent performances. Our emotion and passion may make all the difference in the final stages of the race.

David Shams (Beijing, @ShamsWriter) – Let’s put on a show in front of record Anfield crowd

Fans will undoubtedly feel the let down after dropping three points at the Emirates. We were on a roll and looking invincible. But as I’ve said before, the season is long and arduous. There will be bumps and snags that tear at the emotions. Doubt will certainly perch on one or both of your shoulders, asking questions you’d prefer not to answer.

The thing about being a football fan is that the moment doubt starts to settle, another match is on the horizon to give you hope. And then you see a run of matches that, on paper at least, assuage much of the unease. At the end of it lies a stern test, a clash that will likely decide the title.

The hallmark of this season is that we’ve largely spent it overcoming, persevering, and showing resilience – all things in short supply last season. Makeshift lineups have sorted it. Injuries weren’t debilitating. And save some questionable decisions by some match officials, we’d have a buffer between us and the rest of the pack.

Saturday, the pursuit continues. I’m looking for the mighty Reds to send a message in front of a record crowd.

James Noble (Worcestershire, @james_noble98) – Anfield factor could prove valuable

Saturday’s meeting with Burnley is one to look forward to. The prospect of having around 60,000 spectators inside Anfield – and breaking the ground’s record league attendance in the process – is an exciting one.

It may prove all the more valuable a day because of what it follows. Sunday’s 3-1 loss at Arsenal was a stinger.

The Gunners were excellent, in fairness, and were good value for the win. We didn’t always do ourselves many favours. A sense of sharpness, threat and edge did seem to be lacking, but that’s arguably reflective of the standards set so far this term.

Jurgen Klopp and Virgil van Dijk’s measured post-match comments set a good tone and retained a healthy level of perspective. It’s now about how we utilise the experience. A defeat well-used can sharpen the senses and boost levels.

Things are now that bit tighter at the top, but our destiny remains in our own hands. Saturday represents the next chance to rediscover our stride, in that regard.

As the team has grown in stature and synchronicity, so has Anfield. It feels, quite literally, like we’ve been building up to this stage of the season. There remains plenty to look forward to.

Danny Murphy has revealed how one of his former Liverpool team-mates was unpopular in the dressing room partly because of the antics of his wife.

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva has inadvertently recently made headlines after his wife, Bella, seemingly suggested that his manager, Mauricio Poechttino, should be sacked after last weekend’s 4-2 defeat to Wolves.

Appearing on TalkSPORT, Murphy revealed that Mrs Silva’s public interventions would not be going down well in the Chelsea dressing room, as he then recalled a similar instance from his own time at Liverpool.

“I find it bizarre that you would get yourself in that situation where a wife, partner or girlfriend, mother, brother or whoever, starts tweeting about your career and the politics of the club and who should do what,” he said.

“It’s beyond my comprehension because it wouldn’t happen on my watch and if it did it would only happen once.

“If Thiago Silva was 25 and planning a long career at Chelsea it would be more relevant because what’s next? Is she going to tweet about (Ben) Chilwell’s poor defending next week?

“Where does it stop? Is she going to tweet about (Nicolas) Jackson missing a header at 2-1? Wait, what?”

He continued: “I remember at Liverpool, we had a little party with all the new players in pre-season and we had some adult entertainment and one of the players’ wives decided to phone the manager and tell him how disgusted she was that he’d put her husband in the situation.

“He alienated himself somewhat because the lads quickly went, ‘What are you doing?’ That would happen the same on social media.

“He was an idiot anyway, he wasn’t a popular boy. The same person’s wife decided on a particular night out with partners to tell another Liverpool player that his defending had been atrocious and he needed to sort his off the field antics out, and I’m talking about a Liverpool legend as well.”

Why you could perhaps take an educated guess at the Liverpool legend in question who found himself on the receiving end of his team-mate’s sharp tongue, it is somewhat harder to narrow down and identify which ‘unpopular’ player Murphy could be referring to.

The midfielder made 249 appearances for the Reds over seven seasons, registering 44 goals, 41 assists, and famously helping Gerard Houllier’s side win the treble in 2000/01 along with the League Cup in 2003.

Xabi Alonso told he should make Liverpool star player-coach if he replaces Jurgen Klopp as manager

Xabi Alonso has been told to make a Liverpool star his player-coach if he ends up replacing Jurgen Klopp as manager.

Last month Jurgen Klopp made the shock announcement that he will step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season, nine years after he took the top job at Anfield.

The German coach has led Liverpool to four major trophies, including the club’s first Premier League crown 30 years after their previous top flight title.

Klopp will leave extremely big shoes to fill, and Xabi Alonso is being tipped as the perfect replacement.

A long list of top coaches including Carlo Ancelotti, Zinedine Zidane and Luciano Spalletti have been linked with the Anfield job, but Alonso remains the top candidate.

With many fans already expecting him to replace Klopp, some have advised him to make an unusual appointment as soon as he gets the job.

Some fans believe Alonso should appoint his former Spain teammate Thiago Alcantara as a player-coach.

The midfielder has been plagued by injuries since joining Liverpool from Bayern in a £20 million move in 2020.

The 32-year-old returned from a nine-month injury lay-off in Liverpool’s 3-1 Premier League defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, but it appears he suffered another injury during his five-minute cameo.

While some supporters will be happy to see the back of Thiago when his contract expires at the end of the season, others want Alonso to keep him on in a player-coach capacity.

“Thiago as a couch/Player could work really well for all parties,” one Liverpool fan on X said, while another commented: “If this works… a new Premier League era starts.”

The idea of Thiago coaching is certainly an interesting one; In June Diogo Jota, Fabinho and Joel Matip were spotted working towards their UEFA coaching badges at the club’s training centre, but Thiago did not join them.

However, other fans are less enthusiastic about the idea of Thiago taking up a new role at the club.

“He [Alonso] definitely would not want Thiago playing,” one fan said, while another cruelly joked “Thiago would still pick up as injury as coach.”

With this achievement, he joined Odion Ighalo in 2019 and Jay-Jay Okocha in 2004 as the only other Nigerians to score three or more goals in a single edition’s knockout stages with Rashidi Yekini being the first to do so in 1994.

The team with the most podium finishes on the continent will look to eliminate South Africa on Wednesday to play either Ivory Coast or Congo DR on February 11 in the final.

With their hopes of making it to their first final since winning it in 2013, the Super Eagles may persevere in the competition’s opening semi-final despite it being unclear if they have enough energy left for another performance that primarily depends on defensive resiliency.

South Africa Preview Ahead of Nigeria
Given that they have previously defeated Cape Verde in the quarterfinal on Saturday and eliminated tournament favorites Morocco in the last 16, South Africa is not expected to be an easy opponents.

While his teammates were wasting away their 12-yard kick attempts, Williams was the clear winner of the shootout that ensued after 120 minutes without a goal saving four penalties.

Because of their goalkeeper’s outstanding play, Bafana Bafana has advanced to the Cup of Nations semifinals for the first time since 2000.

They were runners-up in 1998, winners in 1996, and third in 2000.

This is their third appearance in the semifinals since the tournament’s inception.

Nigeria The 1996 winners are eager to surpass an old rival en route to the country’s third AFCON final after 24 years.

The fact that South Africa has never defeated Nigeria in the Cup of Nations—losing 2-0 in the 2000 semifinals, 4-0 in the 2004 final, and being eliminated after a 2-1 loss in the 2019 last eight—highlights how unfair this matchup is at the continental championship.

Although Osimhen is Nigeria’s best player, the Napoli striker’s careless finishing is concerning for the country as they attempt to win an African championship for the fourth time.

Despite tiring as the quarterfinal went on, the African Footballer of the Year is expected to start and will likely be surrounded by Moses Simon and the in-form Lookman as forwards in Peseiro’s 3-4-2-1 formation.

If any of the three players, Simon, Ola Aina, or Calvin Bassey are booked on Wednesday, Nigeria will lose them to suspensions in final.

After receiving yellow cards against Cape Verde, Aubrey Modiba, Grant Kekana, and Mothobi Mvala could also be missing if South Africa makes the final.

Similar to the Super Eagles, Broos’s team has not given up a goal since their opening match against Mali, and the AFCON 2017 champion manager is unlikely to alter the defense that has shut out opponents for four straight games.

Nigeria not only had an extra day to recover before their match against South Africa on Wednesday in Bouake, but they also made it through the knockout stages without the need for extra time or penalties, which gave Peseiro’s team the physical advantage they needed in the semifinals to go to the championship match.

Nigeria has had an outstanding AFCON season; after five games, they have not experienced a loss.

The Super Eagles have not looked back since their initial match, a 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea.

Nigeria has scored in every game so far, despite their tendency to miss chances to score goals.

Additionally, it seems that manager Jose Peseiro has perfected his defensive setup because they have only let up one goal in the competition and have had four straight clean sheets.

🚨Monumental’☑️Mbappe Bid Prepared as Striker Deal Confirmed in Liverpool Transfer Round-Up ACCEPTED✅

‘Can’t defend’… Pundit says Liverpool have a player who is truly useless defensively

Trent Alexander-Arnold has earned all sorts of plaudits this season, but after a poor performance at the weekend, the critics were back out.

Indeed, the right-back was poor against Arsenal on Sunday, and, sadly, the knives have been out for the 25-year-old after this performance.

Speaking on the Highbury Squad YouTube channel, Steve Nicol has had very little sympathy for Alexander-Arnold after this performance, claiming that Mikel Arteta will have told Arsenal to exploit that flank all week long due to the fact he believes Alexander-Arnold simply can’t defend.

“That’s when you’re at the best, with space to run into and able to get match-ups in wide areas. Martinelli particularly. I’m sure Arteta all week was saying we need to get Martinelli against Alexander-Arnold because Alexander-Arnold can’t defend,” Nicol said.

Harsh
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this criticism levelled at Alexander-Arnold, but we still can’t help but disagree.

Could Alexander-Arnold be better defensively? Of course he could, but is he a massive problem? No.

Let’s not forget, before this weekend, Liverpool had the best defensive record in the league, and while they’re now level with Arsenal on that front, their defensive record is still brilliant.

That has been achieved with Alexander-Arnold playing right-back for the vast majority of the season, and if he couldn’t defend that wouldn’t be possible.

Alexander-Arnold isn’t the best defender in the world, but he’s capable of playing in a backline that has the best defensive record in England, and that’s what matters.

Alexander-Arnold is a special player, and while it’s always tempting to pick holes in his game, we can’t help but think that we should be focusing on the positives of this young man’s skillset rather than constantly knocking him down for a perceived lack of defensive ability.

Parlour insists Arsenal’s victory keeps them in the Premier League title race

Ray Parlour insists Martin Odegaard and the Arsenal squad were right to savour the moment after the weekend’s emphatic 3-1 victory over Liverpool.

With the knowledge that defeat would leave them eight points behind the league leaders, Arsenal put on an excellent showing and roared to a win which moved them to within two points of Jurgen Klopp’s title hopefuls.

After the match, Arsenal’s players celebrated with real passion and club captain Odegaard attracted plenty of criticism after he took the photographer’s camera to capture some memories of the moment himself.

The Norway international has already laughed off the negativity, and Gunners legend Parlour believes there was no other way to celebrate such an important victory.

“Of course you have [got to celebrate those moments],”he told 90min in an interview with NetBet. “You get into the hype with the fans. The fans must have been buzzing after the game, knowing they’d beaten Liverpool, who are going very well, top of the league… If you win, it certainly puts a statement out there.

“There’s a long way to go yet, but if they had lost that game, I think that’s the title race over. It’d be down to Manchester City and Liverpool.

“I can understand people saying, ‘They think they’ve won the league already’. We’ve not won the league. Man City are still the ones to beat for me, but you’ve certainly got to enjoy the moment, enjoy beating a really top side like Liverpool.

“I think you’ve got to celebrate. I celebrated until the early hours of the morning!”

On the wider performance, Parlour added: “It was brilliant. The fans played their part as well which they’ve done in the last few seasons, and the players really responded.

“They’re the sorts of days you want to be at the Emirates, when they’re winning games like that. It was a big game. I know people say, ‘They think they’ve won the league already’ over the celebrations, but if they lost that game against Liverpool, I think they’d be out of the title race. That’s why it was a bigger game for Arsenal than it probably was for Liverpool. Being at home as well, you have to put one over, especially after the FA Cup defeat.

“I was a little optimistic before the game, I said 2-1, maybe 3-1, but I didn’t expect it to pan out like that. I think they deserved it.”

With momentum now on their side, Arsenal will head to the London Stadium on Sunday for a meeting with another rival, West Ham United.

Parlour was in the stands in April 2023 when Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw in this fixture – a result which kick-started their fall from the top of the Premier League table – but he hopes to see the Gunners flex their experience to avoid falling to a similar fate this time around.

“It’s no good going away next week and losing the game,” he said. “I thought this was pivotal last year, the West Ham game. I was at the game last year at the London Stadium and Arsenal were cruising but West Ham ended getting back into it and getting a draw. Two points dropped.

“They’ve got to start as they did last year. They were dominant in the first 20, 25 minutes last year and West Ham didn’t know what hit them. I was sitting with West Ham fans saying they were going to leave if it went to 3-0, but [Thomas] Partey made a mistake and they got back into the game. They’ve got to learn from last year and see the game out and win the game.”

Liverpool’s title rivals suffer injury blow ahead of clash with Man Utd
The in-form Aston Villa star will be a key miss for them in the title race and they currently sit six points behind Liverpool.

Liverpool’s title rivals in Aston Villa are set to be without key figure Ezri Konsa for their huge clash against Manchester United this weekend.

Aston Villa, who have been in brilliant form this season, sit in fourth place just five points off leaders Liverpool having already lost at Anfield early in the campaign. Jurgen Klopp’s side ran out 3-0 winners at home in September but both sides have been in great form overall.

With Manchester City scoring a comeback win over Brentford and Arsenal getting the edge over Liverpool at the Emirates over the weekend, there is a genuine three-way title race which sees three very good sides going at it for the league title. For Villa, they will need to build on their 5-0 win over Sheffield United and get back to producing a brilliant run, given they’ve just won one of their last four in all competitions.

One of those defeats was a 3-2 loss to Manchester United, having been two goals up at Old Trafford and they welcome them to Villa Park this weekend hoping to get revenge. That task has just become that bit harder given that key figure Konsa has been ruled out of action which will see his run of 61 straight league appearances come to an end. He was brought off during the win over Sheffield United and will be absent for a few weeks.

Boss Unai Emery confirmed this ahead of Villa’s FA Cup fourth-round replay against Chelsea on Wednesday night, “Ezri is injured,” he explained. “He has a knee sprain and is not going to be available. I don’t know, three or four weeks more or less.” He also stated that Pau Torres, another permanent fixture in the side this season will return which will help soften the blow of losing Konsa.

“Pau Torres has started training with the group and he is going to be on the bench tomorrow,” said Emery. But Jhon Duran is still injured. “Lucas Digne is progressing very well but he is not available tomorrow,” he added. Liverpool do not travel to Villa Park until May 11, their penultimate game of the season and it could play a huge factor in the title race.

Hungarian journalist disputes media reports on Dominik Szoboszlai injury
BY
TOM COATES
PUBLISHED 1 HOUR AGO
The bad news continues at Anfield but various media outlets have conflicting reports.

salah-premier-league-liverpool-west-ham-klopp
With the wounds still fresh from the shock news of Jürgen Klopp’s departure, Liverpool have endured a torrid weekend that has seen them defeated by Premier League title rivals Arsenal and now lose one of their star players to a possibly lengthy injury.

Liverpool injury updates
As if the stakes were not already high enough, a Premier League title is now the expectation for Liverpool as they look to close out the Klopp era on a high. The loss at the Emirates has slightly scuppered their title chances, ending the Reds’ run of four consecutive league wins as well as giving Liverpool their first Premier League loss since September and just their second all season.

Despite the disappointment last weekend, Liverpool still sit at the top of the Premier League, with Man City just two points behind. Whilst stopping City winning their fourth consecutive title is difficult in itself, Liverpool are now staring down a growing injury list as they look to defend their position at the top of the league.

Van-Dijk-Klopp-Liverpool-Arsenal
Mohammed Salah’s absence due to the Africa Cup of Nations has now been prolonged by a hamstring issue, keeping him out of action for a couple of weeks. With a busy schedule of both domestic and European games coming up, the long-term injuries to Kostas Tsimikas and Joel Matip will throw further issues the way of the Liverpool coaching staff.

Whilst Klopp has been able to prepare for most of these absences, it is the unexpected loss of an important figure that will give the German a selection headache for the next few weeks.

Hungarian media outlets in Szoboszlai dispute
The 3-1 loss at The Emirates saw Liverpool’s lead at the summit reduced but, it will be the news of Dominik Szoboszlai’s injury that will hit hardest for most Reds’ fans. The Hungarian international was initially ruled out of the trip to North London as a precaution whilst he recovered from a hamstring injury, but news from his homeland has suggested the issue is far more sinister than first thought.

Reports out of Hungary from Index suggest that the ongoing hamstring issue will keep Szoboszlai sidelined for the entirety of this month. What started out as a precautionary measure has morphed into an issue that could see Liverpool’s number eight missing a crucial period in their quest for a second Premier League title.

However, another Hungarian source, Bence Bocsak, who has written for a number of reputable publications, has since disputed the news from the midfielder’s homeland, sharing an update of his own on X.

Since arriving from RB Leipzig this summer, Szoboszlai has played a vital role in Liverpool’s march to the top of the table, starting in all but three games and contributing three goals and two assists. A midfielder as comfortable starting attacks as he is finishing them, his presence will be sorely missed as his side look to fill the creative void left by his absence.

With Szoboszlai sidelined, Klopp will be scrambling to find players to fill the hole left in their midfield. Players who can produce on the attacking end whilst still putting in the leg work in the middle of the park are difficult to come by, making the Hungarian’s absence all the more painful for Liverpool.

Detroit Michigan – The visiting Louisville Triumph FC narrowly defeated Detroit City FC on Saturday night, handed their first-ever loss in Premier Arena Soccer League play as focus shifts to a massive home tie against Cincinnati Sirens FC on February 10.

Things started off well for Le Rouge, playing in front of a sold-out crowd at the Detroit City Fieldhouse for the third consecutive match. Just two minutes into the first quarter, midfielder Hannah Crum created space for herself before uncorking a shot that snuck its way into the corner to put Detroit City FC ahead 1-0.

Their lead would be short-lived, though, as Louisville went up the other end and scored just twenty seconds after kickoff after a clever build-out from the back saw a path open up for the visiting Erin Yenney whose powerful strike found its way past Le Rouge’s Gabby Schriver to level the match at 1-1.

Louisville Triumph would come into this match having just narrowly lost by a 6-3 scoreline against four-time national champions Cincinnati Sirens just seven days prior. Throughout the match, they showed a good mentality and an ability to weather the storm, thanks to great saves by their goalkeeper Elyssa Francis.

With just 2:40 remaining in the first quarter, Detroit City FC earned a corner kick after the visiting goalkeeper saved a powerful shot by Kayla Addison. On the corner, Tatiana Mason cleverly set up first-time starter Joan Sieja who had the composure to make it 2-1 to Detroit City.

The game was turned on its head in the second quarter as Louisville would dictate play for most of the 15 minutes. Detroit City FC would create their share of chances but struggled to carve through the visitors with the same ease they experienced in the first quarter.

With just over seven minutes remaining in the half, Louisville was played through on goal. They were first met by Gabby Schriver, but she struggled to get a firm hand on a ball that was never settled. From there, Louisville was able to poke it home to equalize the match once again.

Less than two minutes later, a blue card was issued to Detroit’s Hannah Crum, the opening goalscorer. Louisville would be surgical with their power play opportunity and score their third goal of the match just seconds later to take their first lead of the evening.

With less than five minutes to go in the third quarter, Louisville found themselves down a player following the issuing of a blue card. Similar to their strong power play at the end of the first half, their penalty kill would step up in a big way.

Detroit City FC had numbers committed forward in search of an equalizer, and Louisville won the ball back
