‘Can’t defend’… Pundit says Liverpool have a player who is truly useless defensively
Trent Alexander-Arnold has earned all sorts of plaudits this season, but after a poor performance at the weekend, the critics were back out.
Indeed, the right-back was poor against Arsenal on Sunday, and, sadly, the knives have been out for the 25-year-old after this performance.
Speaking on the Highbury Squad YouTube channel, Steve Nicol has had very little sympathy for Alexander-Arnold after this performance, claiming that Mikel Arteta will have told Arsenal to exploit that flank all week long due to the fact he believes Alexander-Arnold simply can’t defend.
“That’s when you’re at the best, with space to run into and able to get match-ups in wide areas. Martinelli particularly. I’m sure Arteta all week was saying we need to get Martinelli against Alexander-Arnold because Alexander-Arnold can’t defend,” Nicol said.
Harsh
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this criticism levelled at Alexander-Arnold, but we still can’t help but disagree.
Could Alexander-Arnold be better defensively? Of course he could, but is he a massive problem? No.
Let’s not forget, before this weekend, Liverpool had the best defensive record in the league, and while they’re now level with Arsenal on that front, their defensive record is still brilliant.
That has been achieved with Alexander-Arnold playing right-back for the vast majority of the season, and if he couldn’t defend that wouldn’t be possible.
Alexander-Arnold isn’t the best defender in the world, but he’s capable of playing in a backline that has the best defensive record in England, and that’s what matters.
Alexander-Arnold is a special player, and while it’s always tempting to pick holes in his game, we can’t help but think that we should be focusing on the positives of this young man’s skillset rather than constantly knocking him down for a perceived lack of defensive ability.
Arsenal legend says club ‘were right to celebrate Liverpool victory – I did until the next morning!’
Arsenal players faced criticism for enthusiastic celebrations after beating Liverpool 3-1
Martin Odegaard, who led the festivities, quickly laughed off the fury
Parlour insists Arsenal’s victory keeps them in the Premier League title race

Ray Parlour insists Martin Odegaard and the Arsenal squad were right to savour the moment after the weekend’s emphatic 3-1 victory over Liverpool.
With the knowledge that defeat would leave them eight points behind the league leaders, Arsenal put on an excellent showing and roared to a win which moved them to within two points of Jurgen Klopp’s title hopefuls.
After the match, Arsenal’s players celebrated with real passion and club captain Odegaard attracted plenty of criticism after he took the photographer’s camera to capture some memories of the moment himself.
The Norway international has already laughed off the negativity, and Gunners legend Parlour believes there was no other way to celebrate such an important victory.
“Of course you have [got to celebrate those moments],”he told 90min in an interview with NetBet. “You get into the hype with the fans. The fans must have been buzzing after the game, knowing they’d beaten Liverpool, who are going very well, top of the league… If you win, it certainly puts a statement out there.
“There’s a long way to go yet, but if they had lost that game, I think that’s the title race over. It’d be down to Manchester City and Liverpool.
“I can understand people saying, ‘They think they’ve won the league already’. We’ve not won the league. Man City are still the ones to beat for me, but you’ve certainly got to enjoy the moment, enjoy beating a really top side like Liverpool.
“I think you’ve got to celebrate. I celebrated until the early hours of the morning!”

On the wider performance, Parlour added: “It was brilliant. The fans played their part as well which they’ve done in the last few seasons, and the players really responded.
“They’re the sorts of days you want to be at the Emirates, when they’re winning games like that. It was a big game. I know people say, ‘They think they’ve won the league already’ over the celebrations, but if they lost that game against Liverpool, I think they’d be out of the title race. That’s why it was a bigger game for Arsenal than it probably was for Liverpool. Being at home as well, you have to put one over, especially after the FA Cup defeat.
“I was a little optimistic before the game, I said 2-1, maybe 3-1, but I didn’t expect it to pan out like that. I think they deserved it.”
With momentum now on their side, Arsenal will head to the London Stadium on Sunday for a meeting with another rival, West Ham United.
Parlour was in the stands in April 2023 when Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw in this fixture – a result which kick-started their fall from the top of the Premier League table – but he hopes to see the Gunners flex their experience to avoid falling to a similar fate this time around.
“It’s no good going away next week and losing the game,” he said. “I thought this was pivotal last year, the West Ham game. I was at the game last year at the London Stadium and Arsenal were cruising but West Ham ended getting back into it and getting a draw. Two points dropped.
“They’ve got to start as they did last year. They were dominant in the first 20, 25 minutes last year and West Ham didn’t know what hit them. I was sitting with West Ham fans saying they were going to leave if it went to 3-0, but [Thomas] Partey made a mistake and they got back into the game. They’ve got to learn from last year and see the game out and win the game.”

Liverpool’s title rivals suffer injury blow ahead of clash with Man Utd
The in-form Aston Villa star will be a key miss for them in the title race and they currently sit six points behind Liverpool.

Liverpool’s title rivals in Aston Villa are set to be without key figure Ezri Konsa for their huge clash against Manchester United this weekend.
Aston Villa, who have been in brilliant form this season, sit in fourth place just five points off leaders Liverpool having already lost at Anfield early in the campaign. Jurgen Klopp’s side ran out 3-0 winners at home in September but both sides have been in great form overall.

With Manchester City scoring a comeback win over Brentford and Arsenal getting the edge over Liverpool at the Emirates over the weekend, there is a genuine three-way title race which sees three very good sides going at it for the league title. For Villa, they will need to build on their 5-0 win over Sheffield United and get back to producing a brilliant run, given they’ve just won one of their last four in all competitions.
One of those defeats was a 3-2 loss to Manchester United, having been two goals up at Old Trafford and they welcome them to Villa Park this weekend hoping to get revenge. That task has just become that bit harder given that key figure Konsa has been ruled out of action which will see his run of 61 straight league appearances come to an end. He was brought off during the win over Sheffield United and will be absent for a few weeks.

Boss Unai Emery confirmed this ahead of Villa’s FA Cup fourth-round replay against Chelsea on Wednesday night, “Ezri is injured,” he explained. “He has a knee sprain and is not going to be available. I don’t know, three or four weeks more or less.” He also stated that Pau Torres, another permanent fixture in the side this season will return which will help soften the blow of losing Konsa.
“Pau Torres has started training with the group and he is going to be on the bench tomorrow,” said Emery. But Jhon Duran is still injured. “Lucas Digne is progressing very well but he is not available tomorrow,” he added. Liverpool do not travel to Villa Park until May 11, their penultimate game of the season and it could play a huge factor in the title race.

Hungarian journalist disputes media reports on Dominik Szoboszlai injury
BY
TOM COATES
PUBLISHED 1 HOUR AGO
The bad news continues at Anfield but various media outlets have conflicting reports.
salah-premier-league-liverpool-west-ham-klopp
With the wounds still fresh from the shock news of Jürgen Klopp’s departure, Liverpool have endured a torrid weekend that has seen them defeated by Premier League title rivals Arsenal and now lose one of their star players to a possibly lengthy injury.
Liverpool injury updates
As if the stakes were not already high enough, a Premier League title is now the expectation for Liverpool as they look to close out the Klopp era on a high. The loss at the Emirates has slightly scuppered their title chances, ending the Reds’ run of four consecutive league wins as well as giving Liverpool their first Premier League loss since September and just their second all season.
Despite the disappointment last weekend, Liverpool still sit at the top of the Premier League, with Man City just two points behind. Whilst stopping City winning their fourth consecutive title is difficult in itself, Liverpool are now staring down a growing injury list as they look to defend their position at the top of the league.
Van-Dijk-Klopp-Liverpool-Arsenal
Mohammed Salah’s absence due to the Africa Cup of Nations has now been prolonged by a hamstring issue, keeping him out of action for a couple of weeks. With a busy schedule of both domestic and European games coming up, the long-term injuries to Kostas Tsimikas and Joel Matip will throw further issues the way of the Liverpool coaching staff.
Whilst Klopp has been able to prepare for most of these absences, it is the unexpected loss of an important figure that will give the German a selection headache for the next few weeks.
Hungarian media outlets in Szoboszlai dispute
The 3-1 loss at The Emirates saw Liverpool’s lead at the summit reduced but, it will be the news of Dominik Szoboszlai’s injury that will hit hardest for most Reds’ fans. The Hungarian international was initially ruled out of the trip to North London as a precaution whilst he recovered from a hamstring injury, but news from his homeland has suggested the issue is far more sinister than first thought.
Reports out of Hungary from Index suggest that the ongoing hamstring issue will keep Szoboszlai sidelined for the entirety of this month. What started out as a precautionary measure has morphed into an issue that could see Liverpool’s number eight missing a crucial period in their quest for a second Premier League title.
However, another Hungarian source, Bence Bocsak, who has written for a number of reputable publications, has since disputed the news from the midfielder’s homeland, sharing an update of his own on X.
Since arriving from RB Leipzig this summer, Szoboszlai has played a vital role in Liverpool’s march to the top of the table, starting in all but three games and contributing three goals and two assists. A midfielder as comfortable starting attacks as he is finishing them, his presence will be sorely missed as his side look to fill the creative void left by his absence.

With Szoboszlai sidelined, Klopp will be scrambling to find players to fill the hole left in their midfield. Players who can produce on the attacking end whilst still putting in the leg work in the middle of the park are difficult to come by, making the Hungarian’s absence all the more painful for Liverpool.

DETROIT CITY FC FALLS TO LOUISVILLE TRIUMPH, 4-3, FOR FIRST EVER LOSS IN ARENA SOCCER

Detroit Michigan – The visiting Louisville Triumph FC narrowly defeated Detroit City FC on Saturday night, handed their first-ever loss in Premier Arena Soccer League play as focus shifts to a massive home tie against Cincinnati Sirens FC on February 10.
Things started off well for Le Rouge, playing in front of a sold-out crowd at the Detroit City Fieldhouse for the third consecutive match. Just two minutes into the first quarter, midfielder Hannah Crum created space for herself before uncorking a shot that snuck its way into the corner to put Detroit City FC ahead 1-0.
Their lead would be short-lived, though, as Louisville went up the other end and scored just twenty seconds after kickoff after a clever build-out from the back saw a path open up for the visiting Erin Yenney whose powerful strike found its way past Le Rouge’s Gabby Schriver to level the match at 1-1.
Louisville Triumph would come into this match having just narrowly lost by a 6-3 scoreline against four-time national champions Cincinnati Sirens just seven days prior. Throughout the match, they showed a good mentality and an ability to weather the storm, thanks to great saves by their goalkeeper Elyssa Francis.
With just 2:40 remaining in the first quarter, Detroit City FC earned a corner kick after the visiting goalkeeper saved a powerful shot by Kayla Addison. On the corner, Tatiana Mason cleverly set up first-time starter Joan Sieja who had the composure to make it 2-1 to Detroit City.
The game was turned on its head in the second quarter as Louisville would dictate play for most of the 15 minutes. Detroit City FC would create their share of chances but struggled to carve through the visitors with the same ease they experienced in the first quarter.
With just over seven minutes remaining in the half, Louisville was played through on goal. They were first met by Gabby Schriver, but she struggled to get a firm hand on a ball that was never settled. From there, Louisville was able to poke it home to equalize the match once again.
Less than two minutes later, a blue card was issued to Detroit’s Hannah Crum, the opening goalscorer. Louisville would be surgical with their power play opportunity and score their third goal of the match just seconds later to take their first lead of the evening.
With less than five minutes to go in the third quarter, Louisville found themselves down a player following the issuing of a blue card. Similar to their strong power play at the end of the first half, their penalty kill would step up in a big way.
Detroit City FC had numbers committed forward in search of an equalizer, and Louisville won the ball back, quickly pouncing up the field to score their fourth goal of the evening. Making the scoreline 4-2.
A few shots from Detroit City FC over the final 20 minutes of play would result in a Clair Ciarlino goal to make things 4-3, but the visitors were able to see out the match and hand Le Rouge their first-ever loss in arena soccer play.

Jordan Henderson stuns reporter with response to Liverpool question after Ajax debut
Jordan Henderson made his Ajax debut on Saturday as the Dutch giants held Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven to a 1-1 draw at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

Jordan Henderson made his return to European football on Saturday as he played the entire 90 minutes on his Ajax debut against PSV Eindhoven. The 33-year-old completed a switch to Ajax from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq during the January transfer window.
After leaving Liverpool for Al-Ettifaq in a controversial $15m (£12m/€14m) move, Henderson made 19 appearances for the Saudi club. However, after just six months, he decided to end his spell due to difficulties settling in the Middle East.
During his stint in Saudi Arabia, it was often pointed out that the crowds were much smaller than what he was used to in the Premier League. His biggest crowd was at an away game against Al-Nassr, where 23,774 spectators saw Al-Ettifaq lose 3-1 to a team featuring Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mané. This was the only time Henderson played in front of more than 15,000 fans in Saudi Arabia.

Al-Ettifaq, in several of their games, played in front of less than 1,000 fans. Their lowest attendance record this season was a mere 610 during an away match at Al-Fayha. In contrast, a whopping 53,744 supporters saw Henderson debut for Ajax against PSV. The match ended 1-1 and was the largest crowd he’s played in front of at club level since his last appearance at Anfield against Aston Villa in May.
Following his debut, Henderson admired the atmosphere in the Johan Cruijff ArenA!. Having spent 12 years playing at Liverpool’s Anfield, his remarks left one reporter astounded, especially considering the small crowds at his games in Saudi Arabia.
“I thought the atmosphere was amazing from the start to the finish,” he shared, as per BBC Sport. “Really helped the lads I think to keep pushing and trying to find that winner.”
Surprised by his reaction, the interviewer asked: “Wait, you are used to Anfield, you are used to and then you say the first thing you say is ‘Wow, the atmosphere here!’?”
Henderson, amused by the query, replied: “Yeah, it was incredible. I’ve heard the atmosphere’s really good. Especially against PSV and teams like this. But yeah, it was really good atmosphere, really special. It was a long time since I played in an atmosphere like that, so I really enjoyed that.”
Liverpool.com says: Henderson will be eager to get back to enjoying his football with Ajax after the ill-fated spell in Saudi Arabia, and playing in front of big crowds will help that. He will certainly make a difference to the Dutch giants as it bids to climb back into the European places after a slow start.

Blow for Spurs: Tottenham ace with 4 goal contributions ruled out of the game against Brighton
By Mehdi Gokal – 2 hours ago
Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso is expected to miss the game against Brighton.
The Argentine picked up a hamstring injury during the game against Burnley and has been out since then.
The extent of Lo Celso’s injury has been shrouded in uncertainty, with O Keefe reporting that the details of his condition are still unknown.
He missed the games against Manchester United and Manchester City but was expected to be back for the Brentford game. However, he ended up missing the Brentford game as well as the Everton.
The latest report from Evening Standard claims that his return date remains ‘unclear‘ however, he is believed to be closing in on a return to action.
Under the management of Ange Postecoglou, Lo Celso has been delivering some of his finest performances in a Spurs jersey, even though his role has primarily been supportive.
He did extremely well in the absence of James Maddison, proving to be a key squad player for the manager. He has 4 goal contributions, scoring 2 and assisting 2 in 10 league appearances so far.
