While Jordan Henderson might have escaped his Saudi Pro League ‘nightmare’ in January, it was a different story for Roberto Firmino.
The pair both left Liverpool to move to the Gulf State last summer, with the England international completing a controversial £12m transfer to Al-Ettifaq while the Brazilian joined Al-Ahli on a Bosman transfer. Having won every major honour at Anfield, both were marquee arrivals in their new surroundings and named club captain at their respective clubs.
Yet both would struggle in the Middle East during the first half of the season. Regularly playing in front of paltry crowds that would only fill a fraction of Anfield, Henderson made 19 appearances for Al-Ettifaq, as he failed to score but registered five assists, after reuniting with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

But while the Saudi side would start the season well, they won only one of their 13 league and cup games since the end of September, dropping to eighth in the Pro League table as a result. With Henderson and his family struggling to settle in the Gulf State, the former Reds captain would ultimately seek pastures new and ripped up his contract to return to Europe with Ajax last month.

The 33-year-old had at least played consistently for Al-Ettifaq, before deciding Saudi Arabia wasn’t for him, with it his own decision to seek an exit. In contrast, Al-Ahli had reportedly wanted to offload Firmino after half a season, only for such a move to fail to materialise.
Enjoying a dream start with the club, the forward actually scored a hat-trick on his debut as he captained Al-Ahil to a 3-1 victory over Al-Hazem on the opening day of the season. But making 19 appearances for the club to date, he hasn’t scored since.
Initially first-choice in attack, he’d lose his place at the end of October following a 3-1 loss to league-leaders Al-Hilal with supporters also said to have turned on the forward. Losing the captaincy in the process, Al-Ahli went on an eight-game unbeaten run after dropping the forward.
Winning five of those matches, and keeping seven clean sheets, the 32-year-old was limited to 94 minutes of action across seven substitute appearances.
Meanwhile, Saudi international Firas Al-Buraikan would lead the line at Firmino’s expense, registering six goals and three assists from those aforementioned eight games to take his total to the club to nine goals from 14 appearances. Having started the season with Al-Fateh, the 23-year-old has 13 goals from 19 matches this season, while his form has helped take Al-Ahli up to third in the table.
After losing his place in the side, Firmino had found himself linked with a move away from the Saudi club with a possible Premier League return mooted. Speculation linked the Brazilian with winter moves to Chelsea and Fulham, only for neither move to materialise, while reported interest from Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq also led to nothing.
Consequently, when the Saudi transfer window closed on January 30, he found himself still at the club. For the record, it had already been reported that he had no intention of leaving Al-Ahli despite the speculation.
Having returned to Liverpool at the turn of the year, and joined Fabinho in watching his former team-mates beat Newcastle United 4-2 on New Year’s Day, Firmino reported back to training with Al-Ahli on January 15 following the Saudi Pro League’s mid-season break.
And he’s enjoyed a respectable return in his side’s friendlies, starting all five games to date and scoring in a 4-1 victory over Abha on January 19, and in a 2-2 draw with Al-Nasr on Thursday. But whether that means the door is open to a reprieve with the club in the second half of the season remains to be seen.

While Firmino might have started all five of his side’s friendlies, six of their leading players, including Al-Buraikan and Riyad Mahrez (their joint-leading goalscorers) are currently away on Africa Cup of Nations or Asian Cup duty. Meanwhile, manager Matthias Jaissle has also tended to rotate the rest of his big-name overseas players between starting and coming on at half-time.

In contrast to the Brazilian, Allan Saint-Maximin and Gabri Veiga started two friendlies apiece, while Roger Ibanez started one. However, all four were named in the starting XI vs Al-Nasr. Ezgjan Alioski has also started two friendlies despite being unregistered for the first half of the season.
Al-Ahli currently have no further friendlies scheduled prior to their Saudi Pro League return against Al Akhdoud on February 16, by which point both Al-Buraikan and Mahrez’s international exploits will long since have finished.
It remains to be seen if Firmino’s mid-season showings signify an upturn in fortunes in the absence of his fellow forwards following a difficult first half of the season. But regardless of where the former Reds man lies in Al-Ahli’s pecking order, he will remain in Saudi Arabia until at least the end of the season.
With Al-Ahli finishing the first half of the campaign in fine form at least, the Brazilian, who will be desperate to end his lengthy goalscoring drought when the Saudi season resumes, will now look to succeed where Henderson failed. If unsuccessful, he will remain just another player to struggle after leaving Liverpool behind, while transfer speculation regarding Firmino’s future will soon rear its head once more.

Micky Van de Ven says Liverpool have a defender who’s even faster than he is
Micky Van de Ven is one of the fastest defenders in the Premier League.
The Dutchman is absolutely rapid. His immense stride length allows him to cover ground incredibly quickly, and we can’t remember a single striker outpacing the defender this season.
Speaking on the Premier League’s YouTube channel, Van de Ven has been comparing his pace to some of his peers, and he’s made an interesting claim about Virgil van Dijk’s pace.
Van de Ven was playing a game of higher or lower in terms of his pace stats on the new EA FC game, and he actually stated that Virgil van Dijk may be faster than he is.
Van Dijk quicker than Van de Ven
The Tottenham defender gave his verdict on the Liverpool star.
“You are rated as 85 pace, We’re going to play a game of higher or lower in terms of pace on FC24,” Van de Ven was told.
“Pedro Porro?” Van de Ven was asked
“I’m faster,” Van de Ven said.
“Virgil van Dijk?” Van de Ven was asked.
“I would say he’s higher,” Van de Ven responded
Pep Lijnders ready to become manager as Liverpool search for new boss
Pep Lijnders speaks about wanting to become a manager
Liverpool assistant will leave Anfield when Jurgen Klopp does
Dutchman has been linked with the job his current boss will vacate
By Jamie Spencer | 3:25 PM GMT

Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders is ready to become a head coach in his own right when both he and Jurgen Klopp leave Anfield at the end of the season.
Lijnders and fellow senior coaches Peter Krawietz and Vitor Matos will follow Klopp out of the club come summer, giving Liverpool a clean break for the future.
Rather than stay at Liverpool as an assistant to whoever the new boss will be, Lijnders believes the time is right to spread his own wings as a manager instead.
“I owe this club everything. They don’t owe me anything, to be honest,” he told LiverpoolFC.com.
“It’s ten years full of dedication. I always said I will finish with Jurgen; the moment I will not assist anyone else, that’s the moment I will go and I will manage.
“That was always the case. So when we spoke, it was clear for me: OK, then I go and manage, and we end this project together [that] we started.”
Lijnders has worked alongside Jurgen Klopp for years / Craig Mercer/MB Media/GettyImages
Lijnders has been linked with the top job at Liverpool alongside the likes of Xabi Alonso, Roberto De Zerbi and Ruben Amorim, but there are no decisions yet as to where he might end up.
“Probably in a few months’ time I will sit down with my [agent], now is not the time, but then I will see what kind of options do I have, which club really wants [me] and in that moment I will make a decision that is for me good,” he explained.
Lijnders has occasionally faced the media on behalf of Klopp during his time at Liverpool and has a prominent role in a variety of tasks usually the domain of a head coach or manager, so it stands to reason that he is well equipped to lead a team of his own.
“The way [Klopp] gives me the freedom to lead the team, to design the training, to make tactical decisions, that says everything, no? It’s sad that we go but I’m excited [for] what’s ahead. But this season didn’t end yet,” Lijnders said.
Having started his coaching career at PSV Eindhoven while still a teenager and later working under a succession of managers at Porto, the 41-year-old Dutchman first joined Liverpool back in 2014 when Brendan Rodgers was in charge. He briefly left Merseyside in 2018 to become head coach of second tier NEC Nijmegen in his homeland, but returned to Liverpool just six months later.

Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister believes the possibility of a leak could have triggered Jurgen Klopp’s leaving announcement earlier than expected.
The Reds’ boss stunned the football world last week when he announced he would be stepping down as manager of the club at the end of the season. Explaining his decision, Klopp said he was running out of energy but insisted he would be fine for the remainder of the campaign.
Klopp’s bombshell announcement has been met with sadness by the Liverpool faithful as they come to terms with the German’s tenure coming to an end. Some people believe the timing of the statement is strange; however, McAllister has a theory as to why the German chose last week to break the news.

Speaking on the William Hill and Footy Accumulators’ podcast, No Tippy Tappy Football, he explained: “Everybody in the world of football was rocked by Jurgen Klopp’s announcement. “Jurgen had let the owners know in November so they’ve done amazingly well to keep it under wraps for this long. Part of me thinks the announcement has been made now because it might have been about to get leaked.
“The way he spoke was very sincere and very heartfelt. He’s been at Liverpool for nine years, managing the expectations of the fans and doing what he has to in order to be a success – he’s done an amazing job.”
Paying further tribute to Klopp, McAllister continued: “Klopp and Liverpool are a perfect match. His style of play is always on the front foot and that is what the fans demand.
“They want to see players playing for the badge and he brings that. He’s got massive character and he also knows how to recruit.
“It takes a lot to build a good team and not only has he built one fantastic team, there’s also the one he’s built now. When you look at them this season, anything could happen. They’ve totally refreshed the midfield and are still heavily involved in all four major competitions.”

Jurgen Klopp hails ‘complete package’ Diogo Jota after impressive recent displays
Ewan Ross-Murray
EWAN ROSS-MURRAY
Jurgen Klopp has hailed the impact of “complete package” Diogo Jota, who continues to shine despite the “crazy” amount of knocks he gets during matches.
Diogo Jota had been sidelined for around a month earlier this season after picking up an injury in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City back in November, but has quickly found his feet again after returning to the team on Boxing Day.
The Portuguese netted just minutes after coming on against Burnley in his first game back and has added another four goals and three assists since the trip to Turf Moor.
Most recently, Jota netted the opener in Liverpool’s 4-1 win against Chelsea on Wednesday, powering through two centre-backs before producing a composed finish from close range.
Another impressive display midweek, Klopp was quick to praise the 27-year-old in his pre-match press conference before the Arsenal game, labelling him the “complete package” despite his rough treatment from opposition defenders.
“He just has it. He’s a complete package,” said the German. “With, and he knows that, everyone [knows] that, with a few injuries at the wrong time – a few too many as well, like unlucky, wow.
“Diogo gets, in each game, knocks like crazy. If I go through the lists of medical reports I got over the years since Diogo is here, he’s in each and every one of them.
“And not as ‘injured’, just as ‘has a bruise’, ‘has a knock’, ‘has that’, ‘has that’. All after each game. So he really gets it. And on top of that, a couple of times he was out for absolutely too long, otherwise his numbers would look completely different.
Klopp added: “He was in a really good shape before he got injured, came back, was in a good shape.
“You can see he is literally flying in the moment, everything looks light, looks fresh, looks explosive, and on top of that, as he always was, an extremely smart footballer.”
Jota will be hoping to continue his two-game goalscoring streak against Arsenal on Sunday, one of his favourite opponents. The sharpshooter has netted eight goals in 14 appearances against the Gunners, only having scored more against Leicester City (nine in 13 matches).
With Mohamed Salah out injured and Darwin Nunez an injury doubt for the trip to north London, even more goalscoring burden will fall on Jota’s shoulders.

Liverpool suffer injury blow ahead of Arsenal clash as Jurgen Klopp reveals star left Anfield in protective boot

Jurgen Klopp has revealed Darwin Nunez is a major doubt for Liverpool’s Premier League clash against Arsenal on Sunday.
Nunez set a new Premier League record when he struck the woodwork four times in the 4-1 win against Chelsea on Tuesday but did manage an assist to help his side ease to victory.
The win kept Liverpool five points clear at the top of the league ahead of Arsenal and Manchester City with Jurgen Klopp’s side heading to the Emirates on Sunday.
Nunez however is struggling with a foot injury having left Anfield wearing a protective boot on Tuesday night.
While X-rays have shown nothing to be broken, it remains to be seen if he will make the trip down south.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday, Klopp said: ‘You probably didn’t know, I don’t know if Darwin will be available or not.
‘Darwin after 20 minutes, someone stepped on his foot and it was very painful. 20 minutes after the game he took the boot off because he didn’t want to see it before because he knew it was something.

‘So he left the stadium in a boot and it was not a football boot. So nothing broken, the X-ray was clear but we have to see if he can get his foot back into his boot because we all know it takes time.
‘I didn’t see him this morning. So we have to wait a little bit.’
Liverpool are also likely to remain without Mohamed Salah.

Welcome to our LIVE coverage of Liverpool vs Chelsea in the Premier League from Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp’s side resume their top-flight campaign with a home clash against Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea this evening. Kick-off is scheduled for 8.15 pm (UK time) from Anfield.
Liverpool go into the game one point clear at the top of the Premier League table, with Arsenal closing the gap thanks to a win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night. Manchester City are also in action this evening, as they host Burnley at the Etihad Stadium in a 7.30pm (UK time) kick-off.
Although Chelsea have struggled this season, there has been nothing to separate them and the Reds in recent matches. The last seven times the teams have met the result has been a draw, including two stalemates in finals at Wembley that Liverpool went on to win on penalty shootouts.
Paul Gorst, Ian Doyle, Theo Squires and Keifer MacDonald will all be in attendance at Anfield to bring you live updates from what should be an eventful fixture.

Liverpool team news: Four changes for the Reds

Massive opportunity for young Bradley
It’s set to be another huge night for the young full-back, making his fifth consecutive start for the Reds.

Please, not another one
Liverpool have a good record against Chelsea of late, having lost only two of the last 18 league meetings. However, they have won only two of the last 11 meetings in the Premier League at Anfield.
Did somebody say it’s a nailed-on draw? Given the last seven meetings have been, let’s hope not.
19:44KEIFER MACDONALD
Liverpool vs Chelsea last five meetings
It’s fair to say the recent fixtures between Liverpool and Chelsea have not been as spectacular as those during the 2000s.
Here are the last five fixtures between both teams in all competitions:
August 2023: Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool
April 2023: Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool
January 2023: Liverpool 0-0 Liverpool
May 2022: Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea (Liverpool win FA Cup on penalties)
February 2022: Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea ( Liverpool win League Cup on penalties)

19:31THEO SQUIRES
No easy feat for Bradley tonight
Conor Bradley will be up against former Red Raheem Sterling on that left-wing too. Hardly the most popular player in these parts these days, his record at Anfield is pretty poor since leaving the club for Man City back in 2015. While the boos and jeers aimed in his direction might not be as frequent as when Jon Flanagan flew into the winger early on his first Anfield return, Bradley will certainly become even more popular if he gets the better of that battle.
19:30KEIFER MACDONALD
Curtis Jones the cover star
It’s set to be another big night for Curtis Jones at Anfield.
The midfielder, who turned 23 on Wednesday, is the cover star of tonight’s programme and set to go toe-to-toe with over £200m worth of Premier League talent in Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. Jones has been one of the brightest sparks for Jurgen Klopp’s ‘Liverpool 2.0′ this season, with their one Premier League defeat this campaign coming when the No.17 was sent off against Tottenham Hotspur back in September.
For someone who thrives off the pressure, expectations, from himself, will be high at Anfield tonight.

19:20PAUL GORST
Big show of faith in Bradley
So any surprises in the team news? The only one for me was I expected Alexander-Arnold back in the side. He is being kept in reserve for Sunday at Arsenal, maybe? In full fairness to Conor Bradley, he hasn’t put a foot wrong really, has he? A fifth successive start for the Northern Ireland international and his biggest game yet.
19:19PAUL GORST
Anfield should be rocking
This fixture at Anfield 12 months ago was one of the most uninspired of the campaign as two struggling teams failed to land a glove on each other as they settled for a goalless draw.
The atmosphere tonight might be very different to that Saturday lunchtime affair, though. I’m expecting it to have a big say on what happens on the pitch tonight. Not every game can be nestled under the ‘Klopp is leaving’ umbrella but with this being the first Premier League game since that announcement, it will be interesting to see how the fans react to it all at kick-off.

Chelsea quietly finding their form in the Premier League
For all that has been made of Chelsea’s underwhelming form in the Premier League this campaign, they seem to have quietly found their way under manager Mauricio Pochettino in recent weeks.
Only four teams in the division, including Liverpool, have returned more points than the Londoners (12) in the last six Premier League games. And tonight they will be boosted by the returns of Christopher Nkunku and Malo Gusto.

Stat attack: Reds’ attack up for the challenge
After beating Newcastle United 4-2 and Bournemouth 4-0 in their last two Premier League outings, should Liverpool tally another four goals at Anfield tonight it would be the first time since December 2021 that they have netted four times in three consecutive Premier League games.
Back then, Arsenal, Southampton and Everton were on the receiving end of the Reds’ relentless firepower.
Can they do the same tonight?

18:51THEO SQUIRES
Bradley or Alexander-Arnold?
I’m interested to see what Klopp does at full-back tonight. Like Gorsty, I suspect Liverpool will be patient with Robertson so Gomez can continue at left-back. But with Conor Bradley performing so well at right-back it would be a little harsh on the youngster just to bench him because Trent Alexander-Arnold is back. Depending on Mac Allister’s fitness, could we see a starting XI featuring both right-backs, with the England international instead stationed in midfield?
18:49KEIFER MACDONALD
Let the numbers do the talking
Mason Mount, now of Manchester United, was the last player to score a winning goal in a Premier League fixture between Liverpool and Chelsea. That, of course, came back at Anfield in March 2021 in the middle of the Reds’ forgetful six-game losing streak on home soil.
Since then, Liverpool have managed to defeat Chelsea in League Cup and FA Cup finals. They did, though, need penalties on both occasions, which occurred in the 2021/22 season.
Nearly three years on, Liverpool can not afford to continue such a barren run against the Londoners if they are to sustain their Premier League title challenge.

Returning options will boost Liverpool
Like Ian says this is an ideal time for so many of Liverpool’s big guns to return, isn’t it? Alexander-Arnold, Mac Allister, Robertson and Szoboszlai all available and ready to report for Premier League duty once more. I don’t imagine all four will start and I suspect Robertson might have to sit it out on the bench but Liverpool’s squad has a more fulsome look about it tonight.
18:28IAN DOYLE
Selection decisions for the Reds
Interesting to see what Klopp does with his team tonight. There are now plenty of options that weren’t there as recently as a week ago.
Szoboszlai, Robertson and Alexander-Arnold are giving the Liverpool boss a welcome headache.

Welcome from Anfield
A very wet and windy welcome to the latest game in Liverpool’s season.
Yes, it’s Anfield and it’s Chelsea in the Premier League.

Japan claimed a 3-1 victory in the game, securing a spot in the quarter-final, which is due to be played on Saturday with their opponents yet to be confirmed.

Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones On Bill Belichick: ‘There’s No Doubt In My Mind I Could Work With Him’ In Shocking Admission

The Dallas Cowboys are sticking with Mike McCarthy as their head coach for 2024, but his future isn’t guaranteed beyond next year.
Jones recently declined to extend his head coach, but praised McCarthy’s role in the Cowboys’ offense that led the league in scoring and ranked fifth in yardage. Dak Prescott was named to the All-Pro second team, as he led the league in touchdowns (36) and ranked second in passer rating, his 105.9 the best mark in his eight years as a pro.
“His work with Dak, his work in the offense was really good,” Jones said of McCarthy. “I feel and he feels, we all feel, that there’s notable more to do improving with Dak.
“Best way to get the meat that’s on the bone is continuity.”

But the Dallas Cowboys owner has been linked to Bill Belicick, who appears will be out of coaching in the NFL in 2024. If McCarthy doesn’t get Dallas over the hump next season, the 6-time Super Bowl winning coach could be next in line.
According to a recent piece by Jori Epstein of Yahoo, Jerry Jones seemed well aware of the narratives that his desire for power and control could conflict with the vast personnel control Belichick seeks, a level of control that, Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson reported, derailed his candidacy for the Atlanta Falcons’ head-coaching role.
None of six other teams interviewed Belichick for their openings this cycle. Four jobs have been filled, while the Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks’ top spots remain open.
Collaborative coaches who work with, rather than above, personnel staff have dominated this cycle’s hirings. Multiple front-office executives told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday at Senior Bowl practices that front offices will only continue to expand across the league as the potential for integrating analytics and technology explodes.
Ezoic
Less than two weeks after Jones issued a statement indicating that Mike McCarthy will return for a fifth season after an embarrassing first-round exit from the playoffs, Jones spoke openly about the prospect of eventually employing Belichick.
Jerry Jones Could Hire Bill Belichick If Mike McCarthy Can’t Get Dallas Cowboys Over Hump In 2024

With McCarthy seemingly on the hot seat for 2024 — and a feeling like noting short of a trip to the NFC Championship will secure his job — Epstein got the Cowboys owner to open up about Belichick possibly coming to Dallas.
But as he considered the state of his team from the Cowboys’ designated suite overlooking Senior Bowl practices on Tuesday, Jones eventually connected the dots.
The question on which he ultimately changed his tune was not about Belichick’s candidacy nor his compatibility with the Cowboys.
Yahoo Sports asked Jones what he respected generally about Belichick. Jones’ response quickly veered away from Belichick’s merits.
“I know him personally and I like him,” Jones said. “There’s no doubt in my mind we could work together. None. None.”
As previously noted, Bill Belichick has repeatedly praised Jerry and Stephen Jones for the organization they’ve built and the talent they amassed with the Dallas Cowboys. And Belichick continues to be available to anyone who wishes to hire him.
Bill Belichick, Dallas Cowboys Jerry Jones
Ezoic
Jerry Jones knows that hiring Belichick wouldn’t guarantee a Super Bowl win. But Jones also knows he could do a lot worse than the coach who has won six of them.
“We all know that he’s certainly excellent, maybe at the top of his profession,” Jones said. “To say that any one person automatically assures you a Super Bowl is ridiculous. That’s too high [an] expectation for him. But is he maybe the greatest pro football coach of all time? Could very well be.
“He is a friend and I like him and I want to make real clear: I wouldn’t have any problem working with him.”
Ezoic
It certainly sounds like Jerry Jones is keeping the door open for Bill Belichick to coach the Dallas Cowboys if things go south with McCarthy next season.

Ben Jacobs has shared what Bayer Leverkusen’s CEO ‘told’ him regarding the club’s stance on Xabi Alonso amid the 42-year-old being touted as the potential successor to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
Fabrizio Romano has indicated that the Spaniard is a strong ‘candidate’ to be the Reds’ next manager, while German outlet SportBild claimed (via FourFourTwo) that the 2010 World Cup winner has a clause in his contract which’d allow him to leave for any of the three major European clubs for whom he played – LFC, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich.
In conversations with BayArena chief Fernando Carro, Jacobs outlined that no such stipulation exists, although it was claimed that the Bundesliga leaders wouldn’t stand in Alonso’s way if he did wish to move on.
The journalist wrote for GIVEMESPORT: “Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso will be a leading contender. Alonso has done a fantastic job at Bayern Leverkusen, who are currently top of the Bundesliga.
“Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro told me back in November that there is no formal clause allowing Alonso to leave for Liverpool, or any of his other old clubs, but he added no one at Leverkusen will force him to stay if he does want a new challenge.”

Few managers in world football currently have a higher stock than Alonso, who in little more than a year has taken Leverkusen from second bottom of the Bundesliga to the very top, masterminding a genuine challenge for their first-ever league title this season.
They’re still unbeaten in the German top flight in 2023/24 and have dropped just eight points out of 57 available, putting them in with a firm chance of being the first team other than Bayern Munich to win the division since 2012.
Barring an inexplicable collapse or major in-house fallout, the 42-year-old looks set to be given the freedom to end his time at the BayArena on his own terms, even though anyone associated with the club must surely be praying that he stays put for the foreseeable future.
Carro’s apparent assertion that Leverkusen wouldn’t try to block Alonso from leaving if he wishes to do so may offer encouragement from Liverpool if, as expected, Anfield chiefs pursue the former Reds midfielder to take over from Klopp.
On current form, the Spaniard is bound to have his pick of jobs whenever he moves on from the Bundesliga pace-setters. Let’s hope it’s LFC who can make the most convincing case to acquire his services when that time comes.
