Liverpool took a step towards a return to Wembley with a hard-earned victory over Fulham in their League Cup semi-final first leg on Wednesday.

Goals from Curtis Jones and substitute Cody Gakpo overturned a first-half deficit following Willian’s opener as the Reds dug deep secure a 2-1 comeback triumph. The result means Jurgen Klopp’s men will head into the return at Craven Cottage in a fortnight with a slender advantage.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at Anfield.

Klopp has had more than a few run-ins previously with referee David Coote. And there was another flashpoint between the pair during the first half.

Alexis Mac Allister wriggled his way out of a foul challenge and fed the ball between the lines for Liverpool to attack the Fulham back four only for Coote to a bit too readily bring play back by awarding the Reds a free-kick.

Klopp, bouncing around on the touchline, was almost apoplectic with rage. Coote, to be fair, held his hands up towards the Reds boss as if to acknowledge his error.

There were two other unusual moments involving Klopp in the second half. With the game ongoing, the Liverpool boss stepped away from the technical area and instead took a seat on the back row of the dugout, where he held a long conversation with substitute Owen Beck.

And during the first half, when Joe Gomez stepped over the touchline while attempting to keep the ball in play, Klopp intervened by embracing the defender before giving him a gentle shove back towards the pitch.

Clearly, the Reds boss loves hugs so much he’s now offering them during the game.

Liverpool took a while to get going and, with the home team having gone behind in the first half, Anfield was in danger of becoming a little subdued.

Pep Lijnders, though, wasn’t having any of that. And the sight of Conor Bradley winning a throw-in early in the second half was enough for the Reds assistant manager to step into action.

Lijnders turned towards the Main Stand behind him and motioned for them to start making more noise. They duly obliged.

Darts of displeasure

Theme tunes for certain competitions have proven divisive. For example, the pathetic Premier League ditty isn’t a patch on the stirring Champions League anthem.

But when the teams lined up before the match on Wednesday, nobody was expecting to hear a version of a crowd singing along to Planet Funk’s Chase The Sun – or the music used at professional darts events, as it’s much better known.

It wasn’t the only oddity inside the stadium, with the home and away fans having swapped sides on lower tier of the Anfield Road Stand. Change as good as a rest and all that.

Paul Merson now predicts who will win this weekend between Manchester United and Tottenham

Paul Merson has now given his prediction for this weekend’s massive Premier League clash between Manchester United and Tottenham.

Both sides have a chance to make some serious ground in the race for top-four at Old Trafford, with United and Tottenham looking to edge their way into the UEFA Champions League debate.

And writing for Sportskeeda, pundit Merson has now delivered his prediction for the clash, with the former Arsenal man going for a draw in Manchester between the two sides.

Merson said: “If Tottenham win this, they’ll leapfrog Arsenal in the table, meaning the Gunners drop out of the top four. Literally three weeks ago, Mikel Arteta’s side were the team to beat and were at the top of the table, but they could be fifth when the action concludes this weekend, which is just unbelievable.

“Manchester United, on the other hand, are nine points behind Arsenal and face an uphill battle to secure a UEFA Champions League spot next season. They need to win this game to stand a chance of finishing in the top four, but they haven’t been consistent this season.

It’s so hard to predict Manchester United but one thing is for sure – they tend to show up when their backs are up against the wall. I predict a lorry-load of goals in this one and will be shocked if it ends goalless, so I’m going for a 2-2 draw.”

As mentioned by Merson, Tottenham can break into the top-four with a win against United this Sunday, overtaking their north London rivals Arsenal in the process.

Such a result would greatly shake-up the top-four race as well as the battle for the Premier League title, with Mikel Arteta’s side looking for top honours this season.

And a win at Old Trafford could be seismic for Tottenham, especially with many fans and pundits essentially ruling out Ange Postecoglou’s side of doing anything this season after their recent blip of poor form.
