Liverpool is known for scouting players for years before bringing them to Anfield. Recently, that was the case with Dominik Szoboszlai, who Liverpool had been following since his Red Bull Salzburg days. But he is not the only one.
Liverpool scouts had followed the progress of Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez from when they were still playing their football back home in South America for their respective Colombian and Uruguayan sides. And before that Mohamed Salah was wanted by Liverpool when he was at Basel, before he moved to Chelsea and then eventually ended up moving to Anfield many years later.
By following players closely for years, it allows the club’s scouts to not only gauge the full potential of a player but also their character by seeing them grow from teenagers to men, and finding out how they deal with the pressures that come with being exposed to bigger and bigger challenges.

Perhaps one of the factors behind why Liverpool’s recruitment has been so successful has been this extensive research, and it’s what separates the Reds from the rest of the Premier League.
Given that Liverpool likes to follow players early, one player who should be on the club’s radar is Franculino from FC Midtjylland. A product of Benfica’s academy, the Guinea-Bissau attacker was signed by the Danish side last summer and has been a revelation ever since arriving at Midtjylland.
So far Franculino has 12 goals and three assists for the club in 18 games and just a total of 829 minutes played. This means he is averaging a goal or an assist every 55 minutes on the pitch for his club side this season, which is quite an incredible goalscoring record.

Clearly with an eye for goal, there are shades of Sadio Mané about him in the way he glides off opponents but also in the way he has been able to transition from playing as a wide player to often being used as a central forward just like the Senegalese winger had been used by Jürgen Klopp during his final few months at the club.
Franculino is only 19 years old, but with the way he can operate in multiple roles across the front three, he’s definitely got the kind of skillsets that Klopp admires and looks for in his players. If you look at most of his offensive options, they can all play in various roles across the front three which makes it easier for the Liverpool boss to rotate them.
Given his goal-scoring prowess, there are bound to be plenty of interested parties to lure him away from Midtjylland, even if he only arrived less than six months ago. Clearly, the step-up to Liverpool would be too big for now, however, the club’s scouts should look to monitor Franculino in the coming years with a view to a potential transfer in the future.

‘I’m no VAR fan, but…’ – Ex-Red uses 65th minute Etihad incident to highlight importance of VAR

Neil Mellor believes it’s a good job VAR is currently in place in the Premier League following one incident during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the weekend.
With the Sky Blues leading through Erling Haaland’s effort in the first half, the hosts were pushing for a second as the clocked ticked past the hour mark at the Etihad.
City midfielder Rodri tried his luck from outside the area but his effort was deflected wide after the ball struck Ryan Gravenberch on the back of his leg.
Rodri, joined by a number of his teammates, confronted the referee gesturing that the ball struck our No. 38 on the arm and therefore claiming a penalty – something which had ex-Red Mellor thankful for VAR as he took to X to comment on the incident this evening.
I’m no VAR fan, but if top players like Rodri are going to start claiming penalties for things like this and put pressure on officials, I can see why we might need it!

VAR will have of course reviewed the incident but it will have only taken one look to see that the referee’s decision to award a corner was the correct one.
It’s rather bizarre that the City players could even claim it hit Gravenberch’s hand when it was nowhere near but we’re not overly surprised to see them asking the question to the referee.
We didn’t necessarily have VAR to thank on this occasion but we can certainly see where Mellor is coming from.
Had the referee awarded a penalty, the technology would’ve been used to ensure the right decision was made.
