Manchester United return to Premier League action on Sunday as they travel to Liverpool to face Everton at Goodison Park. Everton’s international break was not a positive one with them being deducted 10 points for breaches of Financial Fair Play.

Meanwhile, Manchester City who have 115 outstanding charges against them, for well over a year, seen to have avoided any penalty, which seems very strange. United will need to build on that 1-0 victory over Luton prior to the international break but have a heavy injury list.

Luke Shaw is back in training but looks likely to sit out this match as United could miss ten other names from their squad, which will make this an important match for United to get a good result from. However, Everton will be seeking to climb up the table again with a victory.

United need to rediscover their identity this season. Last season, there were so many positives that the results were coming for Erik ten Hag. However, this season, there is something wrong in the camp and there are so many negatives. Players are unhappy when they should be thankful.

That has been the problem over the years for United; players seemingly assume they are the bees knees and should be looked at differently playing for United. When that privilege should be afforded to the club, the management and the supporters. Footballers today seem to have attitudes.

Ten Hag will need to get United playing well against Everton, who have been in a relegation battle for the last few seasons, which could happen again this season. United have an injury crisis and need to overcome that, then the results have to start coming. United need to get the better of the Toffees.

Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘facing possible disciplinary action’ over comments after Man City draw

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold could face FA disciplinary action for his comments after his side’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City, a report has claimed.

The Reds defender equalised in the second half with a low driven shot from 20 yards past Ederson, and was awarded the player of the match award by Sky Sports.

The result did drop Liverpool to third, but the general consensus was that it was a point gained for Jurgen Klopp’s side against the team that could end up being their title rivals this term.

Alexander-Arnold celebrated his goal by ‘shushing’ the City supporters. When asked why he did it after the match, he simply said because it was ‘funny’.

But as per The Sun, the Liverpool defender’s admission that he performed the celebration in front of City fans on purpose could land him in trouble with the FA.

The laws of the game state that any player must be shown a yellow card if they are found to have been ‘gesturing or acting in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory way’ towards members of the crowd.

However, referee Chris Kavanagh did not book the Liverpool defender for his celebration, and it is unclear whether he saw it happen.

The Sun add, however, that Alexander-Arnold would likely be warned about his future conduct if the FA were to take any action, and there were no particular appeals for sanction after the incident happened live.

On the game itself, the 25-year-old said in his post-match interview with Sky Sports: “There’s been many times we’ve played a lot better against City and lost the game. So to come here and get the point is a good result for us, if I’m honest.

“It’s something we needed as a team. It instills that belief that, even when we don’t play well against the champions – they just won a treble last year and they’re top of the league – if you can’t play well and still get a point against them, we’ve done something right.”

Prepare yourself for a shock. Trent Alexander-Arnold is actually a good right-back. Well, that’s probably not much of a shock if you’ve watched him over the past seven or so years. After all, it’s not like Liverpool became Premier League, European and world champions in spite of him.

But leading up to Saturday’s game against Manchester City, you might have been forgiven for thinking you might have imagined all of those great performances. The narrative heading to the Etihad was that Jérémy Doku was essentially going to end Alexander-Arnold’s career as a full-back, and we would all have to give in to Gareth Southgate’s way of thinking and concede that he can only be a midfielder.

Except, it didn’t work out that way. In fact, Alexander-Arnold would go on to be awarded the Player of the Match award by Sky Sports’ Gary Neville, a man who knows a thing or two about playing right-back. And it wasn’t just a token award after scoring the equalizer.

“His performances on the ball are absolutely out of this world,” Neville said on his podcast afterward. “The difference between me and him is night and day. I can’t even relate to what he’s doing on the pitch.

“He’s playing in central midfield for 50-60 per cent of it, he’s going forward scoring goals, he’s setting up goals and assists. He’s achieving numbers that right wingers don’t achieve.

“He’s got the material to be the very best right-back of all time. But he’s going to have to be a little bit more serious about his defending because currently he struggles to get into the England team — or he has struggled. He will need to, when Liverpool and England are under the cosh, be able to be a resilient, tough defensive player as well.

“That’s something I think he can add to his game. I don’t give up on the fact that he can be a very good defender. I think defending is not that difficult to learn compared to the bit of his game that he has got.”

Neville is right to not give up on Alexander-Arnold as a right-back. Jürgen Klopp certainly hasn’t, despite some observers interpreting his shift to an inverted role as a sign of him softening his stance.

“Why make the best right-back in the world a midfielder?” Klopp asked back in 2021 after Southgate’s first foray into moving Alexander-Arnold. “I don’t understand that really. As if the right-back position is not as important as the others.

“If people say that I struggle to really understand how you could think that. Some people think that because he plays 10 yards further up on the pitch he would be more influential.

“Being more influential than Trent Alexander-Arnold in the last how long he has played for me is really tricky and you need to have a proper look to find somebody.

“We adapt and try to use his skillset, absolutely, but in the end, the right-back is the one who defends the right side and he is doing that really well and when we have the ball we use him as good as we can.”

As for the man himself, well he’ll just play wherever he needs to play. He knows that he has the skill set to move into any position that is asked of him, whether that is right-back, midfield, or any mix of the two.

“I think with an idea of moving into midfield and the idea of playing in midfield, I still have those ideas in my head,” Alexander-Arnold said earlier this month (via the BBC). “Everyone sees the game differently. I have always had that view [of being a creator], and when I first transitioned into becoming a full-back, I wanted to change how it was played for me, not just for the game in general, but more so for me.

“How I can get the best out of myself by doing those things, how I can still perform to the level I need to, and I expect from myself, and offer those things to the game from a full-back position. To change how people interpret the role and how people see it.

“I am sure in a midfield role that will potentially be the same. I want to create and do things on the pitch, I want to do what I am told to do and whatever role that may be, I am sure I will find a way to make it work, that brings the best out of me.”

Inevitably, the conversation over Alexander-Arnold will not end there. These arguments never go away in football — it’s 2023 and we still get Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes conversations as if they weren’t tedious enough when they were playing.

If Alexander-Arnold has shown anything though, it’s that he is of course in the conversation to be the best right-back in the world. He could also be in the conversation to be the best midfielder in the world. Let’s just go for a happy middle ground and accept that he’s simply one of the best players in the world. Thankfully, that much is inarguable.
