A scorcher from Mateusz Musialowski gave Liverpool U21s hope of victory over League Two side Barrow, keeping up his streak of scoring in every EFL Trophy tie.

Musialowski has improved this season after it was anticipated that he would sign a free transfer to Austrian team TSV Hartberg in the summer, but Liverpool’s demands forced him to stay.

After worries about his application off the ball, the 20-year-old, who is in the last year of his contract, moved into the center-forward position and improved his all-around game.

This has included consistent goals and assists, the most remarkable of which came in the EFL Trophy against elite opponents.

Tuesday night, Musialowski completed a perfect trip with a goal and an assist against Blackpool, as well as a goal against Morecambe.

The Pole picked up the ball outside the area, swerved, cut to his right foot, and then fired a veering attempt that went past Josh Lillis and into the top corner.

Along with two assists, it was his sixth goal in 11 games across all competitions this season, solidifying his place as an important member of Barry Lewtas’ young squad.

Trey Nyoni, the midfielder, and Amara Nallo and Carter Pinnington, the centre backs, are three 16-year-olds in Lewtas’ starting lineup versus Barrow.

After making his full debut in the U21s’ weekend loss to West Ham, Nyoni—who has been training with the first team in recent weeks—started for the U21s consecutively.

Sadly, it ended in loss as Barrow, who are currently sixth in League Two, took the three points thanks to goals from Sean Etaluku and Mazeed Ogungbo in the second half.

However, Liverpool came near several times, thanks to the skillful manipulation of 34-year-old player-coach Jay Spearing, who created opportunities for Melkamu Frauendorf and Lewis Koumas.

Musialowski came close to tying the score late on with a free-kick, but it was not to be. Kaide Gordon, sporting the captain’s armband, also put Lillis to the test from range.

The youthful Reds may still advance to the next round provided Blackpool, under the direction of former academy coach Neil Critchley, wins over Morecambe the following week.

Liverpool U21s: Gordon (Morrison 59′), Koumas, Musialowski; Spearing (Pilling 59′), Nyoni (Onanuga 82′), Frauendorf (Kone-Doherty 46′); Pitaluga; Miles, Pinnington, Nallo, Davidson;

Next match: Burnley (A) – Lancashire Senior Cup – Tuesday, November 28, 7pm (GMT)
