Arsenal have lost their first Premier League game of the season after falling to a 1-0 defeat against Newcastle United.

Both teams had come into this evening’s game on the back of contrasting results in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday night. The Gunners were beaten by West Ham United in east London whilst the Magpies recorded an impressive 3-0 victory away at Manchester United.

In terms of team news, the visitors were handed a huge blow with Martin Odegaard not in the matchday squad, whilst Newcastle had as many as nine senior players – including Sandro Tonali Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak – unavailable for selection for one reason or another.

The game, in truth, lacked quality and the only goal of the game came just after the hour mark – and following three VAR checks – when Anthony Gordon smashed the ball into the back of the net from close range.

KEY EVENTS

We’re off!

Carragher on the goal

For me, the big one is whether the ball goes out at the start. I don’t think it’s a foul on Gabriel and the offside is difficult too to see. This is the big one, the problem is with the camera angles and that they didn’t have the right angle for it. You’ll see photos on social media of people saying it was out but the angle isn’t conclusive so I’m glad in some ways it carried on. When you look at the offside, when they can’t determine where the contact [from Joelinton] is.

19:49TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Gordon on his goal

Yeah, I don’t know how many checks they wanted, I saw like two or three go up so I was hoping one of them weren’t right. I’m just so happy to get the goal and win the game. It shows our togetherness so far this season, we’ve had some really difficult games and we’ve had some really good results and that shows how far we’re going as a team.

19:45TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

How we rated the Arsenal players

Arsenal were not great this evening, Eddie Nketiah, in particular, was disappointing but William Saliba was good.

FULL-TIME!

That’s the final whistle at St. James’ Park and it’s a defeat for Arsenal.

8 more minutes

Eight minutes added on, plenty of time to find a goal…or two!

19:20TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Bruno Guimaraes booked

Bruno Guimaraes goes into the book. It’s a surprise it’s taken this long!

19:17TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Not great from Arsenal

Arsenal have had a lot of possession since conceding, but they’ve not generated a clear goalscoring chance just yet.

Could be here for a while

Three separate checks are going on here.

18:56TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

VAR to Arsenal’s rescue?

It looks like the ball was out of play and VAR could save Arsenal here.

63TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Goal for Newcastle

Newcastle take the lead through Anthony Gordon.

Newcastle subs

On: Willock and Murphy

Off: Murphy and Almiron

18:54TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Rice goes close

Arsenal work the ball really well down the left and the ball comes out to Declan Rice who can’t quite steer his header on target.

18:46TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Great defending from Arsenal

Newcastle look to threaten on the counter but Ben White and Gabriel get back to snuff out the danger.

18:42TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Havertz living on the edge

Despite being on a yellow card, Kai Havertz is not pulling out of any tackles.

18:40TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Martinelli test

New opponent for Martinelli with Tino Livramento coming on for the second half and Kieran Trippier switching to left-back.

18:32TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Jamie Carragher on the Bruno Guimaraes incident

For me it’s a silly challenge again, similar to Havertz, he’s lost his head and it’s more of a forearm for me. IIt’s not great, he’s a lucky boy, but I don’t think it’s a red card, if the referee sees it, I think he gives him a yellow.

18:29TOM CANTON

The benefit of television

Half-time is the first chance I have got to see a replay of that Bruno Guimaraes moment. How on Earth is he still on the field?

That Havertz tackle

Watch: The Kai Havertz tackle that everyone is talking about.

18:21TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Half-time – Goalless

Well, that got a bit tasty towards the end of the half! Kai Havertz was shown a yellow card for a needless tackle whilst Bruno Guimaraes is fortunate to still be on the pitch.

In terms of chances, they have been scarce with both defences on top so far.

18:20TOM CANTON

Half-time ratings

David Raya – 6

Ben White – 5

William Saliba – 7

Gabriel Magalhães – 6

Declan Rice – 7

Bukayo Saka – 5

Gabriel Martinelli – 6

Eddie Nketiah – 5

18:18TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Bruno Guimaraes fortunate

Bruno Guimaraes is perhaps fortunate to still be on the pitch. Replays show him catching Jorginho with his elbow, but VAR checked it and decided it was not an act of violent conduct.

18:15TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Gary Neville on that Havertz foul

Well what is he doing? Arsenal have complete control of the game, now it’s all boiling over and that is a stupid, stupid challenge. I think it was dangerous rather than reckless.

18:12TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Gordon chance

Bit of a let-off for Arsenal as Anthony Gordon loses concentration at the back post and the chance goes.

18:11TOM CANTON

Chaos

That Havertz challenge sparked madness between the coaches and players. The noise has managed to find a new level which is impressive in itself.

Havertz was pushed around after making the challenge and the Arsenal players immediately came to his aid. Protecting their teammate in great fashion to avoid any unnecessary treatment.

39TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

St. James’ Park is alive

Safe to say that tackle from Kai Havertz has increased the decibel levels inside St. James Park. Big five minutes for Arsenal, you feel.

18:07TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Oh Kai

For some reason, Kai Havertz flies into a ‘stupid’ (Gary Neville’s words) tackle on Dan Burn and is shown a yellow card. This is being checked by VAR…

18:02TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Burn gets away with one

Dan Burn fouls Bukayo Saka twice in quick succession, but he escapes without a yellow card.

28TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Offside

It’s a well-worked free-kick as Dan Burn knocks the ball down for Callum Wilson who fires over from close range. The flag was up for offside though, but it would have been interesting had the net rippled.

27TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Newcastle free-kick

Newcastle’s chance to threaten from a set-piece.

17:55TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

“Powerhouse” Declan Rice

Gary Neville has heaped praise on Declan Rice as the Arsenal midfielder is beginning to stamp his authority on proceedings.

17:52TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Jorginho volley

Jorginho can’t keep his volley attempt down after the ball falls to him outside the area as a result of Nick Pope’s punch. Arsenal on top right now.

17:51TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Close

Pinball in the Newcastle box following Saka’s corner, Trippier makes a fine block but Arsenal win another corner.

17:50TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

End-to-end

A game has broken out with both sides threatening, Arsenal win a corner but perhaps Saka should have done better.

17:48TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Nervy

Arsenal play out from the back and are almost caught out when Miguel Almiron closes down Gabriel Magalhaes but the Newcastle winger ends up conceding a free-kick.

15TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Arsenal corner

Short corner routine from Arsenal which leads to nothing.

14TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Arsenal possession

A decent spell of possession from Arsenal as they go from back to front. And it ends with a shot from Tomiyasu which earns a corner.

11TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

A key battle

Gabriel Martinelli forced an own goal in this fixture last season and his battle against Kieran Trippier could be key this evening.

08TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Play stopped

Play has been paused momentarily for Joelinton to receive treatment after coming off worse in an aerial duel with William Saliba.

17:39TOM CANTON

BANG!

Saliba and Joelinton collide and Saliba wins! Huge shouts from both sets of supporters. The noise is quite something in this cauldron.

Arsenal have ridden a small Toon storm here and have worked themselves well into the game with some physical battles like that one.

07TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Nketiah wins a free-kick

Eddie Nketiah does well to win a free-kick deep in his own half. That should ease the Newcastle pressure that was growing.

04TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Havertz’s position

Kai Havertz is taking up some interesting positions already. At times, he is pushing really high up to give Arsenal a 4-4-2 shape.

01TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

Good start from Newcastle

Newcastle straight on the attack as Kieran Trippier whips a ball into the box, but Gabriel Magalhaes is alert to clear the danger.

17:30KEY EVENT

We’re off!

The game is underway!

17:28TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE

One minute’s silence

As expected, there will be a period of silence before kick-off.

17:26TOM CANTON

Let’s go!

The atmosphere is ramping up here at St James’ Park! The Arsenal fans are making as much noise as they can high up in ground.

Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be tracking Aberdeen defender Slobodan Rubezic after a scouting mission to Scotland.

Aberdeen centre back Slobodan Rubezic is thought to have put himself on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar.

That is according to The Sun, who claim that Ange Postecoglou has told Tottenham to scout in Scotland.

Postecoglou already has a decent grasp of the Scottish game having managed Celtic for two years.

The Australian wants Tottenham to keep up to date with the talent north of the border though, with one new name in the mix…

Tottenham Hotspur attracted to Aberdeen defender Rubezic
The Sun claim that Tottenham scout Ian Broomfield watched Aberdeen centre back Slobodan Rubezic in action.

Rubezic has only been with Aberdeen for a few months now but is already turning heads.

Tottenham now appear to be keen with Postecoglou looking for more defensive options.

Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have formed a great partnership but Eric Dier hasn’t been a key part of the plans.

That leaves the door open for another signing with Rubezic now on the radar ahead of 2024.

Who is Tottenham target Slobodan Rubezic?
Rubezic hails from Belgrade in Serbia and spent time in the youth ranks of both Vojvodina and Cukaricki.

Rubezic moved on to Arda Kardzhali in Bulgaria before returning to Serbia with Novi Pazar.

Aberdeen pounced to land Rubezic over the summer, paying just £200,000 to lure him to Pittodrie.

A giant 6ft 4in defender, Rubezic doesn’t really seem like a typical Postecoglou defender right now but he is only 23 and could be developed.

Dons teammate Stefan Gartenmann certainly sees big things in Rubezic, telling The Press and Journal that the defender has ‘everything to be a top defender’.

Gartenmann added that Rubezic is a ‘big name in the making’ if he continues his development, predicting big things for him.

Rubezic recently switched his international allegiance to play for Montenegro, making his debut against Lebanon in October.

Tottenham may well have found a potential gem in Rubezic and they will likely keep tabs on him moving forward.
