Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp praised the desire of his Liverpool players after they weathered a “strange” Bournemouth storm to book their place in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Substitute Darwin Nunez struck a memorable winner 20 minutes from time as the Reds earned a 2-1 fourth round triumph at the Vitality Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Cody Gakpo had put Liverpool ahead in the first half only for Bournemouth to capitalise on the extremely windy conditions when Justin Kluivert headed in from a corner shortly after the hour.

RATINGS: Liverpool player ratings as Darwin Nunez and Jarell Quansah great vs Bournemouth

REACTION: Nunez is about to unleash Liverpool potential as full-time actions speak volumes

The visitors were put under periods of severe pressure in the second half with the home side having the wind in their favour.

And Klopp was delighted with how his players stood firm to set up a tie at home to West Ham United next month.

“It was a top, top, top cup game,” said the Liverpool boss. “It’s all about winning, it’s all about getting through. I don’t need to talk about the circumstances because everyone saw it and felt it.

“It was really difficult for both teams. In the first half we could have scored more goals but didn’t. In the second half we realised it would have been a good idea to score more goals (in the first half) because the wind changed the game again.

“We scored our second goal, a wonderful goal, and then we fought extremely hard. It’s all about attitude in these moments. Both teams obviously wanted it but I saw how hard my team really wanted it and I was really happy about it. A top cup game in strange circumstances.”

Klopp admitted Liverpool rode their luck during a difficult second half as they attempt to regain the trophy they won in 2022.

And he added: “It’s just super. We knew there would be a storm and strong winds. It was so hard to play football in it.

“Difficult game, Bournemouth did really well. In football sometimes you need luck and in one or two situations they could have finished better.”

Liverpool take on Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in the fourth round of the League Cup tonight.

Jurgen Klopp has made plenty of changes from the side that beat Nottingham Forest in the Premier League at the weekend. Alisson Becker is given the night off as Caoimhin Kelleher comes in to make a rare start in goal. Joe Gomez is also recalled to start at right-back with Trent Alexander-Arnold making way.

Kostas Tsimikas continues at left-back in place of the injured Andrew Robertson while youngster Jarell Quansah gets a chance to impress in the Liverpool defence. He’s joined by Joel Matip in the middle of the back four with Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk dropping to the bench.

Alexis MacAllister is given a rest as Wataru Endo is recalled to start in midfield. Dominic Szoboszlai keeps his place but Ryan Gravenberch makes way with Harvey Elliott recalled to start in the middle of the park for Liverpool tonight.

Darwin Nunez is given a breather as Cody Gakpo comes in to start in attack. Mohamed Salah keeps his place to make a rare appearance in the League Cup. Curtis Jones is recalled to start with Diogo Jota dropping to the bench.

Here are the confirmed line-ups:

Bournemouth
Radu: Smith, Mepham, Zabarnyi, Kerkez; Scott, Philip, Christie; Semenyo, Solanke, Kluivert.

Subs: Plain, Aarons, Sensei, Rothwell, Traore, Brooks, Dango, Tavernier, Moore

Liverpool
Kelleher, Gomez, Matip, Quansah, Tsimikas; Endo, Szoboszlai, Elliott; Salah, Gakpo, Jones.

Subs: Adrian, Van Dijk, Konate, Nunez, Mac Allister, Jota, Gravenberch, Scanlon, Alexander-Arnold.

The 26-year-old striker was absent from Liverpool’s match against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

His team-mates expressed their solidarity with the Colombian by holding up one of his jerseys on the pitch after scoring the team’s first goal in their 3-0 victory.

The abduction of Díaz’s parents comes as kidnappings for ransom and extortion of businesses increase in Colombia despite efforts by the nation’s first left-wing government to broker ceasefires with rebel groups.

Criminals and rebel groups in the country have long kidnapped civilians for ransom in order to finance their operations.

So far, none of the armed groups operating in Colombia has claimed responsibility for kidnapping Diaz’s parents.
