Sky Sports release full understanding of events after ‘requesting audio’ of Luis Diaz offside call

The VAR audio from the controversially disallowed Luis Diaz goal for Liverpool against Spurs has not been released but Sky Sports have provided further clarity of the situation.

Diaz’ goal was wrongly chalked off after the linesman flagged but the biggest error came from VAR, who mistakenly believed the on-field call was to give the goal and said the check was complete.

Liverpool, who also had two players sent off in the 2-1 defeat, were understandably furious with the costly gaffe – which has since resulted in both Darren England and Dan Cook being dropped from VAR duties.

In response to the apology from the PGMOL, the Reds issued a damning statement of their own before demanding that the audio exchange is made available.

It was reported by ESPN that the request was set to be adhered and there was talk about airing it during Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football broadcast of Fulham vs Chelsea.

Howard Webb has a relationship with the show and appeared on it at the very end of last season.

Sky were unsuccessful in their attempts to have the audio on tonight’s show but did provide a detailed explanation of the absolute mess which occured.

ADVERT
Version of events, as per Sky’s understanding:

• Given offside on-field

• VAR checked for offside and drew 2D line

• Lines confirmed onside but VAR only tells on-field officials ‘check complete’

ADVERT
• Play restarted within two seconds of ‘check complete’

• VAR/AVAR realised error had been made but believed that the

VAR protocol within the Laws of the Game would not permit stopping the game and decided intervention was not possible at this stage

• Thus on-field officials not aware decision was wrong until half-time

ADVERT
Jamie Carragher and Frank Lampard gave their strong opinions on the blunder, though both agreed that replaying the game would not be the correct action to take.

Diogo Jota’s wife calls Liverpool’s defeat to Tottenham “fixed”

KENNYSPORTNEWS OCTOBER 2, 2023 4 MIN READ

Rute Cardoso was furious with Simon Hooper and PGMOL for their decisions

Diogo Jota’s wife Rute Cardoso has accused Premier League officials of “fixing” Saturday’s match between Liverpool and Tottenham.

Cardoso was furious with referee Simon Hooper and PGMOL for sending Jota off with two yellow cards in two minutes against Spurs, who won the controversial match 2-1 thanks to a Joel Matip own goal.

He was also irritated by the red card shown to Curtis Jones and the fact that Liverpool were seemingly unable to score after Luis Diaz was caught offside.

Cardoso took to social media to call out Hooper and the PGMOL for his decision on Saturday, which prompted an unprecedented statement from Liverpool and led to VAR officials being banned from future games.

He shared a video of Jota’s first foul against Destiny Udogie, complete with a clown emoji and a PGMOL statement with the words “rigged game” crossed out. Cardoso has 36.3K followers on Instagram, where he expressed his frustration with the officialsHe shared a video of Jota’s foul on Destiny Udogie with a clown emojiHe also shared a statement from PGMOL with the words “rigged game” crossed out.

Jota, who was introduced as a half-time substitute by Jurgen Klopp, received his first yellow card of the game in the 68th minute when Udogie tried to move down from behind to thwart Spurs’ resistance.

But replays show that Udogie stumbled when he felt pressure from the Portuguese forward – a point Cardoso highlighted.

Things went from bad to worse for Jota barely two minutes later when he was shown a second booking.

Udogie chased the 26-year-old down the right and tried to recover it with his leg dangling.

But the Liverpool star clipped the Italian, prompting Hooper to reach into his pocket for a second yellow card. Liverpool were also denied a clear goal after Diaz was sent off, for which PGMOL later apologized and admitted was wrong.

A PGMOL statement said: “PGMOL acknowledges that a significant human error occurred. PGMOL is conducting a full assessment.

– Luiz Diaz’s goal was disallowed by the referee for offside. It was a clear and obvious foul and should have been won by VAR intervention, but VAR did not intervene.’

Liverpool then took the unprecedented step of releasing an official statement about the incident. The club said on Sunday: “Liverpool Football Club acknowledges the failure of PGMOL last night. It is clear that the Laws of the Game were not applied correctly, resulting in a breach of sporting integrity.

“We fully accept the pressures under which the relevant officials work, but the existence and implementation of VAR should ease that pressure, not add to it.

“That is why it is not satisfactory that not enough time was allocated to make the right decision and that the subsequent matter was not dealt with.

“It is also unacceptable that such errors are already classified as ‘significant human error’.” All results should be determined based on review only and in full transparency.

“This is essential for the credibility of future decision-making, as it applies to all clubs whose expertise will be used to improve processes so that such situations do not happen again.

“In the meantime, we are exploring the options available because we have a clear need to move forward and resolve.”

VAR disallowed Liverpool’s goal against Tottenham, even though Luis Diaz was played by Cristian Romero according to replays. PGMOL have confirmed that VAR official Darren England (pictured) and VAR assistant Dan Cook (not pictured) are stepping down. for future matches

PGMOL previously confirmed that the two VAR officials involved in the colossal foul on Diaz’s goal, Darren England and Dan Cook, have been banned from future Premier League games.

It later emerged that the two demoted officials were in the United Arab Emirates two days before the massive hijacking, prompting PGMOL to investigate them more closely.

England and Cook covered the United Arab Emirates Pro League match between Sharjah and Al Ain from 8pm local time on Thursday. They completed their 16-hour round trip by flying back to London on Friday ahead of Tottenham and Liverpool on Saturday.

“Luiz Diaz’s goal was disallowed by the on-field referee for offside. This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have led to a goal through VAR intervention, but VAR did not.”
