Eddie Howe wants his Newcastle players to become legends on Tyneside, but he knows they will need to compete with Man City and Liverpool for trophies soon

Liverpool are the only team to beat Newcastle four times since Eddie Howe’s arrival on Tyneside, but the Magpies’ manager knows they are a hurdle he must overcome to deliver on the long-term ambitions of the club’s ownership – and its fanbase.

Craig Hope writes of the increasing expectations at Newcastle as they are plunged into a new kind of existence.

‘For manager Eddie How, the biggest threat to his own existence is himself. He is the overriding reason Newcastle’s journey has been accelerated to a land where his team are expected to compete with City.’

A one-goal loss away from home to the best club side in the world would not usually lead to fan inspection and star players clashing with supporters – but Newcastle United exist in a new world now.

Hello and welcome!

Good afternoon all and welcome to Mail Sport’s live blog of the Newcastle-Liverpool game.

This afternoon will be a great test for two sides who are at least looking to prove their top-four credentials and perhaps more.

Eddie Howe has only lost four of his 34 home games at St James’ Park and if their 5-1 evisceration of Aston Villa is anything to go by, Liverpool will be in for a tough afternoon.

But in steps Jurgen Klopp, a man who is unbeaten in his last 13 matches against Newcastle.

A fascinating encounter awaits.

Mo Salah could “embarrass” Steven Gerrard again as Saudi transfer talk grows

Jurgen Klopp dismisses Mohamed Salah transfer talk

Liverpool star Mo Salah could potentially inflict further embarrassment on Reds’ icon Steven Gerrard should he complete a stunning move to Saudi Arabia.

The Egyptian forward is of interest to Al-Ittihad before the end of the transfer window and it appears that there is confidence over in the Gulf State that he will complete a switch. Salah already has an offer to become the highest-paid player in the Saudi Pro League, according to reports.

Reports over in Saudi Arabia have claimed that he will undergo a medical with Al-Ittihad after Liverpool’s game with Newcastle on Sunday. It has been claimed that he will fly to Dubai after the clash at St James’ Park to go through tests in anticipation of a move, although it remains to be seen if the move will materialise and Liverpool have previously insisted their star man isn’t for sale.

Should he rubber-stamp a switch, Salah could potentially be set to humiliate Gerrard once more. Al-Ittihad take on the former Reds midfielder’s Al-Ettifaq side on November 23.

Whilst Salah will by no means be guaranteed to get his name on the scoresheet, he will most certainly be one of the most talented players in the entirety of the league. Should he find the net against Gerrard’s side, it wouldn’t be the first time that the former midfielder has been left embarrassed by Salah.

Back in November 2020, the Egyptian forward matched Gerrard’s Champions League goal record with his 21st goal in the competition. Speaking at the time, Gerrard said: “Records are there to be broken, of course they are.

“I was very proud last night to see Mo Salah equal my scoring record for Liverpool in Europe, it was only a matter of time. I honestly think he’ll go on and embarrass my record — and I hope that he does.”

His prediction has certainly rung true, with Salah going on to score a further 20 goals in the Champions League for Liverpool – his record now sitting at an astonishing 41 goals in just 63 matches.

Whilst there is confidence in Saudi Arabia, Gerrard has already had his say on a deal for Salah. Asked if he wants the forward to move this summer, he simply replied: “No.

“The answer is no because Mohamed Salah is my favourite player, I love Liverpool Football Club, so Mohamed can stay where he is. When he wins more leagues and more Champions Leagues with Liverpool, we’ll maybe consider it.”

Gerrard is not the only one of a Liverpool persuasion to believe Salah would be best served staying at Anfield for the immediate future. Former Reds’ striker Robbie Fowler said: “I’ll put in a word for him to stay. I want him to stay at Liverpool!”
