Liverpool transfer news as $190m signing’realistic’and a great ‘offer made’ DONE DEAL

With time ticking down before the September 1 transfer deadline, what will come next for Liverpool? Signing another two or three players would be ideal, but there are less than 10 days left in which to do business.

By the time Liverpool plays Aston Villa at Anfield the weekend after next, its squad will be confirmed and settled until January when it can start to make more moves. By then, though, half of another season will have elapsed.

With such a big turnover of players this summer in terms of exits, it is a surprise that there has only been three arrivals — Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo — but there is still time for one or two more. As Endo proved, things can happen from nowhere and when the wheels are set in motion, deals can quickly advance.

The midfield department and the defense remain the big priorities for Liverpool to get sorted out, with depth in both areas currently a little light. With that in mind, here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today.

André Trindade (Fluminense)

Liverpool has made an offer of $31m (£25m/€29m) to Fluminense for 22-year-old midfielder André Trindade, Cauã Tinoco reports. This follows similar reports from the Brazilian outlet Globo.

But Fluminense does not want to lose the player until its season is concluded, which would mean only letting him go in January. But he does have a release clause worth $44m (£34m/€40m) that could take the decision out of their hands.

Liverpool.com says: André appears to be a talented player worth keeping an eye on but it might be more likely to happen in a few months. For now, Endo might have to be the short-term solution.

Perr Schuurs (Torino)

Liverpool is continuing to seek a left-sided center-back in the coming days with Football Insider reporting that Perr Schuurs is viewed as a ‘realistic option’ considering his relatively modest $38m (£30m/€35m) valuation.

Since joining Serie A side Torino from Ajax, Schuurs has relatively regularly been linked with a move to Anfield but Liverpool has resisted the chance to do so up to now.

But with cover for Virgil van Dijk required at the back and no other current Liverpool defender suited to playing the left-sided role, the Dutchman has made a return to the gossip column.

Liverpool.com says: Would Schuurs represent an upgrade on what Liverpool has at the moment in terms of cover center-back options? Almost certainly yes. But does he have a high enough ceiling to make him a player that Liverpool should be targeting? There is a reasonable question mark about that.

Alexis Mac Allister red card appeal accepted as Liverpool midfielder has ban overturned

Alexis Mac Allister has seen his red card picked up in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth on Saturday overturned.

The Argentina midfielder was given his marching orders midway through the second half of the victory against the Cherries following what was viewed as a dangerous challenge by referee Thomas Bramall on Ryan Christie.

After a check from VAR Paul Tierney, who was reviewing the video footage at Stockley Park, Mac Allister was sent off on his home debut following his £35m switch from Brighton & Hove Albion. It was Liverpool’s first red card for 12 months.

However, after the club lodged an appeal on Monday, the decision has now been overturned by the Football Association, who reviewed the evidence via an independent regulatory commission, leaving Mac Allister in the clear to take part in the game against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

An FA statement read: “An independent Regulatory Commission has removed Alexis Mac Allister’s three-match suspension following a claim of wrongful dismissal. The Liverpool midfielder was sent off for serious foul play during their Premier League game against Bournemouth on Saturday, 19 August.”

Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic have not played since April and March, respectively and Wataru Endo only joined the club last week from Stuttgart, so the news from the FA will be viewed as a major boost for Jurgen Klopp as he sweats on the fitness of Curtis Jones, who missed the weekend’s game with an ankle issue.

Speaking on Saturday as regards Mac Allister’s red card, Reds boss Klopp said: “I saw it back, I think the amount of times I’ve been asked about it shows we’re discussing it. In the game, I asked Macca and he said, ‘I touched him but not really’, that was all he told me. After the game, I saw it and if you have a list of points of what we need to give a red card, for what we need for contact, no other box is ticked in that moment. I think the punishment 40 minutes with 10 men it’s already punishment enough.”

A number of individuals weighed in with strong opinions on the controversial call involving the 24-year-old, with Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker among those who had no doubt in their mind the incorrect verdict had been reached. Taking to Twitter, Lineker wrote: “Mac Allister sees red but it’s a nonsense. Referee and VAR at Anfield having a poor day.” Shearer said: “I think this is a terrible decision, an awful decision. There is no force at all. I know he is slightly high, but he is not going in with great force and power.”

Ex-Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher was also in agreement with the Match of the Day duo, adding: “Not a red card, for me. I think the problem here is the referee thinks this is a high tackle but it only becomes a high tackle because both players are there.

“If you look the boot actually catches him on the ankle, so if his foot was on the ground he’d still catch him in the same place so it’s not a high tackle. That is what has deceived the referee.”

Report: Club open to selling £26m “raging bull” to Liverpool; deal may be done late in window

The Fiorentina midfielder is eyeing a move away this summer…

Liverpool have now been given a new update on their pursuit of Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, with a report suggesting a deal could be there to be done late in the window…

Which midfielders are Liverpool signing?

Although he was not convinced by Ryan Gravenberch to begin with, Jurgen Klopp is now targeting the Bayern Munich midfielder as a priority, with 90min reporting the player himself would be interested in a move to the Premier League this summer.

Another target for the Reds is Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips, with talkSPORT reporting he had been planning to fight for his place at the Etihad Stadium next season, but his resolve to stay could be tested if Klopp’s side come forward with an offer.

Speaking to Give Me Sport, journalist Rudy Galetti has recently confirmed that OGC Nice’s Khephren Thuram and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Manu Kone also remain on the Merseyside club’s list of targets, although other top European clubs are interested.

As such, despite missing out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, Klopp still has a plethora of options to choose from this summer, with productive talks also being held over a deal for Crystal Palace’s Cheick Doucoure, as per The Daily Mail.

Not only that, but Amrabat is also still a target for Liverpool, with reports from last week detailing the deal was progressing towards completion, and there has now been a new update on the midfielder’s future.

According to the print version of Corriere Fiorentino on Monday (via Paisley Gates), the Moroccan has made it clear he wishes to move on and play for a new club this summer, with Fiorentina more than happy to let him leave.

The Serie A club are ready to sell the 27-year-old, having left him out of the first team on the opening day of the season, and it is now down to Liverpool to agree a suitable fee, with a deal potentially set to be left until late in the window.

Fiorentina have been holding out for €30m (£25.6m) for quite some time, which Liverpool are yet to get close to, but they may have to move swiftly if they are keen on signing the central midfielder, as they are set to face competition from rivals Manchester United.

Is Sofyan Amrabat a defensive midfielder?

Indeed, the Morocco star has predominantly featured in a defensive midfield role throughout his career so far, as a result of his stellar attributes, having been ranked fifth for interceptions at the 2022 World Cup, as of December 7th.

However, the maestro is also comfortable in possession, placing in the 94th percentile for his pass-completion rate per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers, despite attempting a comparatively high number of passes.

At the World Cup, Amrabat wowed Moroccan journalist Amine El Amri, who described him as a “raging bull”, but questions have to be raised over whether he is the best option available to Liverpool.

At 21 years of age, Gravenberch would be a more long-term option for Klopp in midfield, and with the manager now changing his mind about the Dutchman, he should remain the Reds’ main priority as we approach the end of the transfer window.
