Simon Jordan suggests Liverpool ‘need’ to sign £50m man but doubts they will
Former Premier League owner Simon Jordan wonders if Manchester City would have reservations about potentially letting England international Kalvin Phillips join Liverpool this summer.
Of course, much will depend on how Man City really see their old rivals these days. You’d have struggled to insert a piece of cigarette paper between Pep Guardiola’s side and Jurgen Klopp’s only a couple of years ago.
Last season, however, the gap turned into a chasm; City storming to yet another top-flight crown while an unconvincing and arguably underfunded Liverpool fell short of the top four.
Some are arguing that Liverpool will struggle to reach the promised land of the Champions League spots again this term unless they can strengthen a midfield lacking bite and defensive resilience following the exits of James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, despite the recent addition of former Stuttgart captain Wataru Endo.

According to talkSPORT, Liverpool could turn to Kalvin Phillips; the £50 million so-called ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’ who first caught their eye while pulling the strings at Leeds United.
Jordan, however, wonders how Man City would feel about the prospect of letting an England international and an established Premier League performer join a club who – if they can get their act together – could still force their way back into the title picture.
“I am not quite as big an admirer as others might be. But, notwithstanding that, I think Liverpool have a need (for midfielder),” the ex-Crystal Palace chairman tells talkSPORT (21 August, 11.40am).
“It will be interesting to see if there is any resistance from Man City about doing business with Liverpool. If there is any pushback on the idea that you are enhancing a rival by giving them something that they are missing.”

Manchester City sold both Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus to Arsenal in 2022 and were very nearly left red-faced; the former Etihad duo helping transform Mikel Arteta’s side into genuine title challengers.
Phillips won a treble in his debut season at City. Then again, he only started two Premier League games due to injury and the irrepressible form of Rodri.

Man United make approach for 22-year-old midfielder, he has an agreement with Liverpool – journalist
Manchester United have reportedly made an approach for Fluminense midfielder Andre, but they will face competition from arch-rivals Liverpool.
According to Emmanuel Luiz, who is a transfer specialist for Brazil, United have approached Andre’s camp over a move to Old Trafford.
However, despite United approaching the South American side for the midfielder, it seems Liverpool are ahead of them in the race for the midfielder.
Luiz, who was speaking on The Redmen TV YouTube channel, has claimed that the exciting midfielder has an agreement on personal terms with Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Despite this, United are seemingly tentatively interested in the midfielder and have entered the race for the 22-year-old midfielder.
Having only entered the race for the midfielder recently, it is unclear whether the midfielder would choose Erik ten Hag’s United over Liverpool.
According to the football expert, Andre has an agreement on personal terms with the Anfield club and has told his current club that he wants to go to Liverpool.
MORE UNITED STORIES
It seems that the midfielder will remain at Fluminense due to the club’s participation in the Copa Libertadores as they have never won the competition and have gone far in the South American competition.
How much would it take for Andre to leave Fluminense
Further to the news relayed by Luiz, Globo Esporte, another Brazilian outlet, has claimed that the Anfield club were willing to put £25 million on the table but the Brazilian side were still not interested in the offer.
If Fluminense were willing to accept £30 million for the midfielder, then United should be all over that deal.
The Brazilian has incredibly high potential and for a fee that low, United should do everything they can to sign the midfielder.
A player small in stature but has the defensive qualities that United could need, he could represent a different option than Sofyan Amrabat.
Whether United push hard for the deal remains to be seen, but he is seemingly an option for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Manager now hints Liverpool interest in his player is pure speculation
Roy Hodgson has called into question the veracity of links between Liverpool and Cheick Doucoure this summer.
The Crystal Palace head coach was directly asked about the Malian’s future and appeared to hint that the Reds’ interest was pure speculation.
“I want to keep all of the players, there’s no doubt about that. I’m the manager, the club getting money for players doesn’t help me. It would be very, very difficult, I think, with whatever money we get to replace those players,” the former Reds boss told reporters at his presser (as relayed by Yahoo!Sport).
“If you’d have asked me to sit here and talk about speculation, Sky [Sports] News fills 4-5 hours a day on the subject on transfers alone.
“I’m afraid, to say, without being any way disrespectful, if most of it wasn’t speculation it wouldn’t be four hours, it would be 40 minutes.”
The Merseysiders, for their part, remain keen on landing another midfield signing beyond Wataru Endo, formerly of Stuttgart, in the current window.

With James Pearce reporting that we’re no longer keen on signing a specialist No.6, perhaps Hodgson’s latest comments do bear more than an ounce of truth.
The profile of choice is now understood to be a multi-skilled midfield operator, of the likes of which perhaps Ryan Gravenberch and Khephren Thuram, to name two, could be good fits in that regard.
Given that a pursuit of Doucoure would also require us to fork out a potentially huge sum and enter into another long, protracted transfer saga, we could understand the club keeping an open mind when it comes to the next man in through the doors of the AXA training centre.

Will Kalvin Phillips be Liverpool’s Solution to Midfield Woes?
Liverpool Football Club is reportedly reigniting its interest in Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips,
Phillips, 27, who had been a target for Eddie Howe’s midfield rebuild at Newcastle, now finds himself potentially linked to Anfield as Jurgen Klopp seeks to bolster his midfield options.
Initial Interest from Newcastle United
At the onset of the transfer window, Newcastle United set their sights on Kalvin Phillips, hoping to add the midfielder to their ranks. However, Phillips resisted their initial interest, expressing his intent to stay and prove himself at Manchester City. Following a somewhat challenging debut year at the Etihad. Phillips remained determined to fight for his place and prove his worth under Pep Guardiola’s guidance.
Phillips’ stint at Manchester City hasn’t gone as smoothly as he had hoped. Despite winning the treble in his debut season after his £42 million transfer from Leeds, Phillips has found himself spending more time on the bench than on the field. His lack of game time has raised questions about his future with the club.
The chance to join Liverpool’s ranks could provide the midfielder with a new avenue to showcase his talents and secure regular minutes on the pitch.
Liverpool to Plug Gaps in MIdfield with Kalvin Phillips
Despite Phillips’ resolve to remain at Manchester City, the transfer landscape appears to be shifting once more. According to reports, Liverpool is considering making a move for Phillips. The Reds had previously explored the possibility of signing him during his time at Leeds. Now, as the summer transfer window draws to a close, Liverpool’s interest has been reignited.
Liverpool has been on the hunt for a defensive midfielder, facing difficulties in securing their preferred targets. Moves for Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia fell through, prompting Klopp to explore alternative options. Phillips, a player well-regarded by Klopp, offers a potential solution to Liverpool’s midfield conundrum.
However, Kalvin Phillips has publicly expressed his commitment to Manchester City. He remains resolute in his desire to compete for a place in Pep Guardiola’s squad. Phillips acknowledges that establishing oneself at a club like Manchester City can take time. Consequently, he’s determined to work hard to earn his spot.
He stated,
“We have just won the Treble, so there is no reason for me to leave other than if I am not playing I will obviously have to think about it…I will definitely speak to Pep.”
However, whether Phillips’ stance remains unchanged, especially with the European Championships looming next summer, remains to be seen. Additionally, If Manchester City opts to enter into transfer negotiations, it remains uncertain whether they would be open to conducting business with a direct competitor.
