Liverpool were forced to dig deep to earn a 2-0 victory at Sheffield United as they showed another sign they can challenge for the Premier League title.

The Reds were far from their best but Jurgen Klopp saluted a mature performance. Goals from Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai were enough for Liverpool to yield three points at Bramall Lane.

Klopp’s troops moved back within two points of leaders Arsenal, although their main aim is finishing in the top four and qualifying for Champions League once again. The race for a top-fourth berth has already been tipped to be the closest battle for some time. And on match-day 15 of the 2023-24 season, results couldn’t have gone much better for Liverpool.

Manchester City are in pursuit of a fourth successive Premier League crown. However, they suffered 1-0 loss to Aston Villa. Ollie Watkins’ strike moved Villa third in the table as they aim to gate-crash the top four. City only occupy the final Champions League spot on 34 points – four behind Liverpool.

Meanwhile, on Thursday day, both Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur were beaten. Newcastle qualified for the Champions League last season ahead of the Reds but they may be in a battle to do so again. Liverpool’s Merseyside neighbours Everton delivered a 3-0 victory over the Magpies at Goodison Park, with Dwight McNeil, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Beto on target. Newcastle trail Klopp’s men by eight points.

Tottenham are the only team to defeat Liverpool in the Premier League this season. Spurs made a barnstorming start to the campaign under newly-appointed Ange Postecoglou and were leaders for a period but have hit the buffers. Their 2-1 home loss against West Ham United was Tottenham’s fourth reverse in five league games. That leaves them fifth and seven points adrift of the Reds. Arsenal also nearly dropped points but Declan Rice’s 97th-minute goal earned them a 4-3 win away to Luton.

Liverpool are two points in arrears of the Gunners yet have the chance to go top should they triumph at Crystal Palace on Saturday lunchtime. But more importantly, the Reds can put further pressure on the chasing pack and take a further step towards returning to the Champions League.

‘Embarrassing’… TalkSPORT pundit hits out at Jurgen Klopp after seeing what he has done

Shamanth Jayaram
Fri 8 December 2023 6:35, UK
Updated Fri 8 December 2023 7:06, UK
TalkSPORT’s Andy Goldstein has slammed Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp for his reaction to a question after their win at Bramall Lane this week.

The German is absolutely adored by Reds fans, and rightly so. He has revolutionised the club over the years, but supporters of rival teams and many in the media have taken issue with how he spoke to Amazon presenter Marcus Buckland after Liverpool‘s game against Sheffield United.

TalkSPORT’s Andy Goldstein hits out at Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has always disliked playing at lunchtime on Saturdays, especially after a midweek game or the international break.

The Reds, for whatever reason, have been forced to play at that time a lot more than any other club in the Premier League, and Klopp has every reason to be upset.

Liverpool’s next game is against Crystal Palace this Saturday, and that is again scheduled to kick off at 12:30.

As a joke, Marcus Buckland said to Klopp on Amazon Prime Sport after the game: “You go to Crystal Palace at your favourite kick-off time at the weekend.”

The Liverpool boss did not find that funny and was far from impressed. “That’s brave. That’s really brave, you made a joke about that,” he said.

Speaking about Klopp’s reaction, Andy Goldstein said on talkSPORT: “He let himself down.

“I thought the way he spoke to Marcus Buckland was a little bit embarrassing. You don’t have a pop at a presenter. You’re on live TV, you’re going to make a presenter incredibly small?”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has every reason to be annoyed
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has made his feelings known on the 12:30 kickoffs time and again because those early games increase the risk of injuries.

Only this week, Klopp confirmed that Joel Matip has suffered a serious knee injury, while in the game against Sheffield United, Alexis Mac Allister hurt himself.

The last comment Klopp would’ve wanted to hear was a joke about the fixture congestion, and you can’t really blame him for reacting the way that he did, can you?

Yes, he could’ve just laughed and let it go, but he had every right to be annoyed – with the joke as well as the fixture list.

LIVERPOOL LOOK TO BENFICA WONDERKID AS SALAH REPLACEMENT

LIVERPOOL’S EYE ON KYANNO LORENZO SILVA: A POTENTIAL SUCCESSOR TO MO SALAH
Liverpool Football Club, renowned for its strategic foresight in the transfer market, appear to be setting its sights on another promising talent, Kyanno Lorenzo Silva, as a potential long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah. This interest emerges amidst speculation about Salah’s future, following overtures from several clubs in the Saudi Pro League during the summer.

SALAH’S UNCERTAIN FUTURE AND LIVERPOOL’S STRATEGY
At 31, Mohamed Salah continues to be a formidable force in world football. However, Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s astute manager, is reportedly contemplating a shift in the squad’s dynamics, focusing on reducing the average age of the team. This strategy might involve capitalising on Salah’s high market value, a move that would require a suitable replacement to fill the void left by one of Liverpool’s most celebrated players.

INTRODUCING KYANNO LORENZO SILVA: A RISING STAR
Enter Kyanno Lorenzo Silva, an 18-year-old right-winger from Benfica, who mirrors Salah in several ways. Not only does he share Salah’s position on the field, but he is also left-footed, adding a similar dynamic to the attack. Silva’s contract situation makes him an even more attractive prospect, with only six months remaining, potentially allowing Liverpool to secure his services at a reduced price.

COMPETITION FOR SILVA’S SIGNATURE
However, Liverpool is not alone in its pursuit. The race for Silva’s signature is heating up, with European heavyweights like Borussia Dortmund and Lazio also showing keen interest. Silva’s journey to prominence has been marked by stints at Feyenoord and Sparta Rotterdam, before making a significant impact at Benfica.

SALAH’S ONGOING CONTRIBUTION AND SILVA’S POTENTIAL IMPACT
As these developments unfold, Salah remains a key player for Liverpool. With 10 goals to his name this season, he looks to add to his tally in the upcoming match against Crystal Palace. Meanwhile, the prospect of Kyanno Lorenzo Silva joining Liverpool raises intriguing possibilities. Could he be the one to step into Salah’s shoes and continue the legacy of excellence at Anfield?

Liverpool to make £30m move for Wolfsburg’s Maxence Lacroix?
By Carter White | 5h

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix, following the potentially season-ending injury to Joel Matip.

The 23-year-old has been a regular fixture for the German side in the opening months of the 2023-24 term, featuring in 12 Bundesliga games and finding the net against Bayer Leverkusen in October.

Lacroix joined Wolfsburg from French outfit Sochaux in the summer of 2020 and has since appeared 113 times for Die Wolfe, scoring on four occasions across all competitions.

Given his nationality of French, competition has been fierce for the centre-back to break onto the international stage, with the right-footed defender only managing to play for his nation’s Under-17s during his career to date.

According to The Sun, Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp could be set to accelerate his plans in the upcoming January transfer window due to recent injury issues.

The report claims that the German boss is a huge admirer of Wolfsburg man Lacroix and is hoping to bring the defender to the Premier League and more specifically Anfield in the New Year.

Following Matip’s anterior cruciate ligament injury during the seven-goal thriller with Fulham on Sunday, the Cameroonian could be sidelined for the rest of the campaign.

The Reds are consequently believed to be planning defensive reinforcements in January as a replacement for the former Schalke centre-back, with Lacroix being on a shortlist of options.

It is understood that Wolfsburg are demanding at least £30m for one of their first-choice defenders, with the player’s current deal at VOLKSWAGEN Arena expiring in 18 months.

Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi’s has also been touted as a possible signing for Liverpool during the New Year, although the England international would supposedly set the Reds back by £50m.

Another complication in any potential deal for Guehi is that Roy Hodgson’s side are not interested in offloading the defender during the middle of the season, with a switch more likely in the summer.

It is believed that the 23-year-old has also attracted the attention of Manchester United over the past few months, however the player will reportedly not entertain a potential transfer to Old Trafford.

With Matip’s season hanging in the balance due to his ACL injury, Ibrahima Konate is set to be Virgil van Dijk’s partner in Klopp’s preferred central-defensive pairing until January at least.

The Reds cut the gap to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal to just two points with a routine victory at bottom side Sheffield United on Wednesday night, and the Merseysiders travel to face Guehi and Crystal Palace at Saturday lunchtime.

Every word an angry Ange Postecoglou said about Tottenham defeat to West Ham and Son limping off
Here’s every single word the Tottenham Hotspur boss said after the 2-1 defeat to West Ham United in the Premier League on Thursday

It seemed like the first half was good, but the second half was poor?

No I don’t think so. I think it’s another game where we’ve dominated a game of football and haven’t turned our dominance into something more tangible and kept the opposition in the game. I thought we were really poor in both boxes tonight – both with our finishing and both goals were terrible to concede.

We had some unbelievable chances – for us it’s another game, like the Villa game and other games earlier this year, and I said during the week our attacking play has a long way to go. In general we have a long way to go, and tonight was more evidence of that.

Is it frustrating after being so good in the first half?

Us being good means us being 3-0 up. This isn’t about us playing good football, it’s about us winning games of football. That’s what I’ve said from the start. I set teams up to win games and 1-0 at half-time was not a good performance from us. A good performance would have been 3-0 or 4-0 up, as was the case against Villa. And when you don’t, and give up goals you shouldn’t like today then you get what you deserve.

Why does the team keep giving leads away? Is it fatigue with all the players out?

Like I said it’s just not having that conviction in front of goal to finish teams off. As simple as that. If we weren’t creating chances, if we were out on feet then those kinds of things you could factor into it. But I don’t see that. Because all our chances, especially in the first half, have nothing to do with fatigue. It’s to do with lacking conviction, at the moment we’re just going through this spell where we’re playing so-called good football but I don’t see that.

All I see is us not really showing any real clear conviction in what we’re doing. It’s almost like we’re thinking the ball will go into the net by itself but it won’t. You need to have that determination to do that and you need to have that determination to keep the ball out of your net at the other end.

Is Son ok, he looked to be limping when he came off?

I don’t know. I’m not sure.

The players looked annoyed with the referee at the end, what was that about?

I don’t know. I don’t think it was because of the ref that we lost today.

How can you turnaround this little spell?

There’s no alternative. That’s the game we’re in. There’s no point in feeling sorry for ourselves, looking for a cuddle anywhere. There’s only one way to change our circumstances and that is to come here on Sunday and put in a performance, not just play good football but go out there and show some conviction about ourselves as a team.

Sometimes we can disguise how we’re going by playing some nice stuff but like I said from day one, that’s not what I’m about. I want to win and that’s why I came to this football club and that’s the message. We’ve still got a long way to go, I’ve said that from the start, we’re still right at the beginning of what we need to create and days like today just give me further evidence and fuel of how much we need to do.

Did you feel that goal was coming in the second half?

No I didn’t feel it was coming. I was disappointed in the manner we accepted our fate in many respects. ‘Oh it’s 1-0 but we’re still dominating and playing well and it’ll take of itself’ but it doesn’t. When you’re facing teams that are as competitive as West Ham if you’ve got them down you’ve got to put them away otherwise they’ll stay in the game. We’re going through this spell where we’ll play some decent football, great, but ultimately it’s not what it’s about. We’re trying to play this football so we can win games and have success not to just put on a show.

Five players who could join Liverpool in January

Liverpool have enjoyed an impressive start to the Premier League season, with Jurgen Klopp’s side sitting in second place just two points behind leaders Arsenal.

It represents an encouraging return to form after a disappointing season which saw Liverpool finish outside the top four for the first time in seven years.

Article continues under the video
However, with Liverpool picking up injuries to key players across the campaign and finding themselves embroiled in a title race once again, Klopp may be hoping to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.

FootballTransfers takes a look at five players who could be on the move to Anfield next month.

Jeremie Frimpong

© ProShots – Jeremie Frimpong (right) has been in fine form for Leverkusen.
Liverpool have been buoyed by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performances this season but Klopp only has Joe Gomez to turn to as a senior backup to the right-back and opting for some depth could prove beneficial in the long-run.

The Reds have been long-term fans of Jeremie Frimpong and the Dutchman is believed to have a €40 million release clause in his contract at Bayer Leverkusen, making him an attractive target.

Frimpong has 22 goal involvements in the Bundesliga since the start of last season and the 22-year-old would be a natural alternative to Alexander-Arnold as an attack-minded wing back who can step up into midfield.

Goncalo Inacio

© ProShots – Liverpool could target a left-footed centre back like Goncalo Inacio
Klopp’s January transfer plans may have been reworked over the past week after the news that Joel Matip will miss the remainder of the season with a cruciate ligament injury.

It has left Liverpool light at centre-back and could fast track plans to sign a long-term successor to Matip, with the club believed to have a defender high on their priority list for next summer.

A whole host of players have been scouted but Sporting’s Goncalo Inacio remains a favourite of Liverpool’s due to his ability as a left-sided centre-back who has an appealing release clause of €60m, making a transfer fairly simple if it was affordable.

Khepheren Thuram

© ProShots – Khephren Thuram has been a long-term target for Liverpool
Liverpool’s midfield was unexpectedly revamped in the summer as the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson left the club and, while summer arrival Alexis MacAllister and Wataru Endo have proven effective, Klopp’s side are still lacking that extra bit of quality at the number six spot.

Although Andre was long considered a target, Liverpool’s interest on the Fluminense midfielder is believed to have cooled, however Nice’s Khephren Thuram is still thought to be admired.

The Frenchman was wanted by Liverpool during the summer but his price tag of €50m was considered excessive, however with his contract due to expire in 2025, Nice may consider a cut-price deal while Thuram’s value is still thriving.

Donyell Malen

© ProShots – Donyell Malen could be available for transfer in January
Although perhaps a lower priority than the defensive side of the pitch for Liverpool, injuries to the likes of Harvey Elliott and Diogo Jota have left Liverpool treading a thin line if more forwards were ruled out.

There may also, quietly, be one eye on a potential successor for Mohamed Salah if the Egyptian is once again pursued by Saudi sides in 2024, meaning a wide player could be targeted over a striker.

Donyell Malen is another player who Liverpool have watched for a long time and the 24-year-old has netted four times this season, while Dortmund are believed to be willing to cash in on him for around €30m, making his transfer an intriguing option for the Reds.

Archie Gray

© ProShots – Archie Gray has been integral to Leeds this season
While the priority will undoubtedly be on securing depth for the remainder of the season, Liverpool will always consider good opportunities for youngsters if they arise.

Leeds wonderkid Archie Gray has been a breakout star this season in the Championship, starting 16 times in midfield as well as at right-back in shades of former Liverpool hero James Milner.

The 17-year-old might cost a pretty penny but he has proven his ability to perform under pressure and could provide crucial minutes right away, while also securing Liverpool one of the best youngsters in the country.

‘Surprised’… Jurgen Klopp shocked after what he heard about Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk last night

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says he was surprised that Virgil van Dijk’s goal against Sheffield United last night was his first of the season.

The Reds were made to work hard at Bramall Lane by Chris Wilder’s men yesterday. It was a really difficult game, but goals from their skipper and Dominik Szobszlai sealed the three points. Klopp was a happy man after the full-time whistle.

Jurgen Klopp shares what surprised him about Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk last night
Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk is one of the best defenders in the world.

The Dutchman is one of the biggest reasons why the Reds have been so successful since he joined them in 2018, and he continues to deliver the goods even to this day.

Van Dijk’s brilliance isn’t just limited to his own box – he is a massive threat at the other end of the pitch too, especially in set-piece situations.

He has scored 20 goals for the Reds in all competitions over the years, and last night’s strike against Sheffield United was his first of this campaign.

When Jurgen Klopp heard Van Dijk hadn’t scored this season before last night, he was shocked.

He said, as per Liverpool’s official website: “All offensive players are invited to score goals, all of them.

“Virg scored, I heard, [it was] his first goal [of the season]. I was a bit surprised, I thought he scored already but maybe it was a different competition or last year, I don’t know. But set-pieces are a massive help in tight games. They were really good today.”

Van Dijk could help Liverpool win the Premier League title
Liverpool had a season to forget last time out. They finished fifth and failed to qualify for the Champions League after a truly disappointing campaign.

This season, the Reds are back and are definitely in the title race.

Jurgen Klopp’s attack is as frightening as ever with Mo Salah, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez all firing, while their midfield, despite the lack of a top-quality number six, hasn’t fared too badly either.

The main man once again, however, will be Van Dijk at the back. If he can play at his best level from now until the end of this season, Liverpool will have a great chance to become the Premier League champions again.

Everton and Newcastle United players clashed in the immediate aftermath of their Premier League game at Goodison Park.

The Blues moved out of the relegation zone with a 3-0 win over Eddie Howe’s side at Goodison. Second-half goals from Dwight McNeil, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Beto secured all three points for Everton.

However, in the immediate aftermath of the full-time whistle being blown by referee Tim Robinson, both sets of players appeared to clash as Everton celebrated. Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius, who was on the bench for Newcastle, first appeared to have some sort of coming together with James Tarkowski.

The Everton vice-captain was being dragged away by his team-mates before Joelinton came rushing in and had to be pulled away by members of the Newcastle coaching staff. Then, as Fabian Schar made his way off the pitch, he clashed with Everton kit man Shaun Doran and had to be pulled down the tunnel.

Jordan Pickford was also involved in melee before he was pulled away. The Everton players then went to celebrate their second home league win of the season in front of the Howard Kendall Gwladys Street, while Howe’s side gathered in front of their fans in the corner of the Bullens Road end.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, former Blues forward James McFadden said: “It is a hard-fought, well-earned victory for Everton. A brilliant result against a Newcastle side that ran out of steam at the end of the game.”

In The Money: Tottenham to benefit from handy cash injection after FA announcement

Tottenham fans will hope to see their team advance far in the FA Cup this season and end a long-stretching trophy drought, while the financial benefits of a healthy cup run could also prove lucrative.

It has been 15 long years since Spurs last lifted a trophy and the club’s supporters will be desperate for a nice day out at Wembley this season and the chance to see their team pick up some long-awaited silverware.

Ange Postecoglou’s side missed the opportunity to do just this in the Carabao Cup as they were eliminated in the second round of the competition, losing a penalty shoot-out against Fulham at Craven Cottage after a 1-1 draw, and fans will be hoping history doesn’t repeat itself in the FA Cup, which is set to get underway for top flight sides next month.

The third-round draw for the competition has been made and it is a favourable one for Tottenham as they will host Premier League strugglers Burnley at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

This offers the north London side a great chance of qualification to the fourth round and with limited fixtures this season due to the absence of any European exploits, this is certainly a competition the club could go far in should they take it seriously.

Not only would a positive cup run be welcomed with open arms by the supporters, but recent developments suggest the board could also stand to benefit in the form of some lucrative cash injections.

The FA has already confirmed the prize fund for this season, with the winners taking home a total of £3.9million for their troubles, with £3million of that for winning the final two rounds.

As well as the prize money which is up for grabs, there are also other ways in which Tottenham could stand to benefit financially by being involved in the competition.

As confirmed via Spurs’ official website (7 December), the third-round clash with Burnley has been scheduled for Friday 5 January at 8pm, with the game set to be televised live on ITV1.

According to the Blackpool Gazette (16 October), any games which are selected to be televised from the third round onwards attract revenue of £100,000 and above.

This means the further Spurs go in the competition, the more chances they have of televised matches, especially if they’re drawn against rival Premier League sides. In addition to this, home draws could also prove lucrative through gate receipts and sales of food and drink in the stadium, which could be worth in the millions for Levy and the club.

A deep run should therefore certainly be a priority for Spurs due to its appeal to both supporters and the board.

In other Tottenham news, a BBC pundit has suggested one Spurs star should come straight back into the team for the clash with West Ham on Thursday night.

Jurgen Klopp left fuming after what Amazon Prime presenter says to him following Liverpool vs Sheffield United
Wed 6 December 2023 22:00
Dylan Walsh
Jurgen Klopp was left fuming on Amazon Prime after clashing with presenter Marcus Buckland after Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Sheffield United.

The Reds manager was asked about Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League game against Crystal Palace, taking place on Saturday at 12:30pm.

As we know, Klopp is not so keen on the early Saturday kick-off, and the Liverpool boss was not pleased when Buckland brought up the time of the match, passing it off as a joke.

Buckland said: “You mention Jurgen you have had to shuffle your pack. Had some injury problems. All these games, you are still going strong in Europe, in the League Cup, FA Cup, you go to Crystal Palace – your favourite kick off time at the weekend.”

As you can expect, Klopp was not pleased with this tone, with the Red bossing hitting back: “That’s great, that’s really great to make a joke about that.”

Buckland replied: “You still have the passion and enjoyment, it’s constant isn’t it, day in, day out?”

Klopp answered back: It is constant. I go home, I don’t know when we arrive, 1 or 2am whatever. We play again. We have two sessions – tomorrow and Friday.

“So it’s fine to recover. So Crystal Palace played tonight so it’s absolutely fine. But I realise you don’t understand it is as well and you work in football so why should I try to explain again? You can make a joke, you’re completely ignorant. Football is entertainment. I understand.”

As you can expect, Buckland was sweating at this point, with the presenter saying: “It’s just one of those issues that come up. I’m not trying to be disrespectful.”

Klopp immediately replied: “You were already. All good, you can say what you what, just I cannot say what I want.”

With Buckland trying to save the situation, the presenter said: “Well listen it has been a success tonight, moved within two points of the leaders and we wish you every success at the weekend as well.”

Finally, Klopp got away with the last word, with the Liverpool manager saying: “You will tell that to Crystal Palace as well.”

Jurgen Klopp right to hit out after Liverpool kick-off comments

Photo by Richard Sellers/Sportsphoto/Allstar via Getty Images
Kick-off times have been a touchy subject when it comes to Klopp, and Buckland knew better than to joke with the Liverpool manager on the topic.

Whilst the opening comment was made in a tongue-in-cheek manner, the presenter should have respected Klopp and his opinions on the matter.

And as a result, the Amazon Prime presenter was burnt live on air, with Klopp coming away with the final laugh and word on the matter.

Dominik Szoboszlai capped off an industrious performance against Sheffield United with a late goal to seal a win against the hosts.

It wasn’t necessarily a game that would have been pleasing on the eye of the neutral but the Hungarian was nonetheless critical to allowing Liverpool a foothold in Yorkshire.

In stats compiled by Sofascore, the former RB Leipzig man recorded 2 key passes and offered a strong defensive performance with 10 out of 17 duels (aerial and ground) won.

The beating heart of Liverpool’s midfield?
The credit for the final goal of the game has to surely go to Darwin Nunez after some remarkable determination to win back possession.

That said, Szoboszlai’s ongoing brilliance in the middle of the park has singled him out as perhaps the most reliable operator in the middle of the park.

What an impact the 23-year-old has made on this Liverpool side following his transfer away from the Bundesliga!

Sheffield United vs Liverpool LIVE! Premier League match stream, latest score and goal updates today
Chris Wilder is back in the dugout at Bramall Lane – can he inspire a famous win upon his return?

Sheffield United vs Liverpool LIVE!

The Reds head to Bramall Lane this evening looking to avoid a potential Premier League banana skin as Chris Wilder has returned to the dugout looking for a new manager boss to boost the Blades in this game, and beyond. Jurgen Klopp will be aware of the threats the hosts will pose but is still expected to rotate his team.

Darwin Nunez is one whose place is under threat, with Cody Gakpo waiting in the wings, while Joe Gomez could come in at left-back should Konstantinos Tsimikas get a rest. Joel Matip has been ruled out for several months with a knee injury so Ibrahima Konate will partner Virgil van Dijk at centre-back.

Liverpool will know their away form is a concern, and something Wilder can exploit, having won just two of seven on their travels in the Premier League this season and they are winless in their last four games against promoted teams. Follow the game LIVE below with our dedicated match blog.
