Romano shares details of ‘agreement’ Liverpool could exploit to bring back ex-Anfield favourite

Fabrizio Romano has shared details of a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ which could leave the door open for Liverpool to bring one ex-Anfield favourite back to Merseyside.

Journalist Ben Jacobs recently told GIVEMESPORT that Xabi Alonso is ‘turning heads’ at his former club off the back of a remarkable 13 months at Bayer Leverkusen, taking over with them 17th in the Bundesliga and guiding them to the top of the table at present.

Jurgen Klopp’s contract runs to 2026, and only an unfathomable turn of events would see him depart before then such is his standing at LFC, but that hasn’t quelled speculation regarding the identity of his eventual successor.

In his Daily Briefing for CaughtOffside, Romano explained that the 42-year-old doesn’t have a formal release clause in his deal at Leverkusen, but rather a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ which may allow one of three former clubs in Liverpool, Bayern Munich or Real Madrid to secure his services at a reduced rate.

The Italian outlined: “Alonso is a fantastic manager, and it’s no surprise to see links with other clubs now, though I’m told there is no proper release clause in his contract.

“There is nothing official for other clubs to trigger – I’m told it’s just a gentleman’s agreement between Alonso and the Leverkusen board. Alonso was on the list of some clubs this summer, but Leverkusen insisted he was staying, but that they would let him go to a top, top club in the future.

“Alonso will be the one with the final decision, and he will make that decision in the summer, but there is no normal release clause, so it’s about convincing Alonso, rather than paying a formal release clause to Leverkusen.”

This revelation from Romano could provide Liverpool with a tremendous opportunity to exploit if they want to bring Alonso back to Anfield, although there’s a danger that Bayern or Real Madrid could get to him first.

The Bavarian club can be a volatile hotbed where managers are under enormous pressure as a matter of course, while Carlo Ancelotti has been touted to leave the Bernabeu at the end of this season, thus leaving a vacancy to be filled in the dugout.

Merseyside chiefs may be secretly hoping that, if the 42-year-old goes to one of those clubs after Leverkusen, they’ll dispense with him by the time Klopp’s current deal ends in 2026.

Right now, Alonso’s managerial stock could hardly be higher off the back of the remarkable work he’s doing in Germany, with his side already scoring an incredible tally of 62 goals in all competitions this term while conceding only 14 (Romano).

Whoever eventually takes over from Klopp will have an extremely hard act to follow at Anfield, but few would likely be as well received and given as much leeway by the fan base as the Spaniard, given his excellent form as a manager and his genius as a former Reds player.

Manchester United willing to give into ‘madness’ for player – Ten Hag asking for ‘significant financial effort’

Manchester United are planning a huge move to jump ahead of Real Madrid for Brazilian youngster Estevão, also known as Messinho.

That’s according to Fichajes.net, who say Manchester United are willing to give into ‘madness’ to get the player ahead of their Spanish rivals.

They explain that the youngster has caused ‘massive madness’ ahead of the January transfer window, with several big sides in Europe all keen on him.

Real Madrid want him and after wrapping up a deal for Endrick had turned their attention to ‘a new gem’ in the form of Messinho.

However, that dream could be ‘frustrated’ because Manchester United ‘would be willing to go all out’ and put an offer of €90m on the table to secure his signature.

That’s a price Real Madrid nor any other interested teams would be willing to pay and thus put them out in front of the competition.
Manchester United’s interest is reportedly being pushed by Erik ten Hag, who is aware of Messinho’s potential and has asked the club to make a ‘significant financial effort’ to secure the signing of the one of future jewels of world football as he continues efforts to reconstruct the squad at Old Trafford.

Now, we’ll take this claim with a massive pinch of salt and a huge does of doubt as well given the source and the numbers mentioned.

€90m would be an insane price to pay for a 16-year-old who is yet to play outside of Brazil, even if he has been making big waves with his performances so far.

That’s even for Manchester United, who may not be averse to spending big sums by any means but would they really go this far for an unproven youngster who hasn’t even been valued by the likes of Transfermarkt yet?

Erik ten Hag makes feelings clear on throwing Kobbie Mainoo into intense Galatasaray clash
Kobbie Mainoo looks set to have a breakout season with Manchester United and could be in contention to make his Champions League debut in Wednesday’s make-or-break clash with Galatasaray

Erik ten Hag has no concerns about handing teenager Kobbie Mainoo his Champions League debut in Wednesday’s must-win game away to Galatasaray.

Midfielder Mainoo, 18, was United’s best player in Sunday’s 3-0 win at Everton – his first start in the Premier League. With experienced midfield duo Casemiro and Christian Eriksen both out, Ten Hag is expected to stick with Mainoo in what is certain to be a hostile and intimidating atmosphere.

But Ten Hag is certain Stockport-born Mainoo – who was primed for a regular first-team run before suffering an injury in pre-season – can handle the pressure, despite his relative inexperience. “If they are good enough, they are old enough,” said Ten Hag.

Erik ten Hag confirms double Man Utd injury boost ahead of crunch Galatasaray clash
“We were very pleased with the performance at Everton, but it’s one performance and you have to do it on a consistent basis. Kobbie is so mature, but you are only as good as your last game.

“You have to keep your focus on the game. You have to focus on your game, your performance and get the right levels in. When we observe that a player is moving away from football and getting distracted, we will tell them.”

United have lost on their last three visits to Turkey and suffered defeats in three of their four Group A games this season, leaving their hopes of making the last 16 in the balance. One man who will hope to be key to United edging towards the knockout rounds is Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese playmaker has also given a glowing assessment of Mainoo ahead of a potential senior European bow. Speaking after the win against Everton, he said: “I talk always about Kobbie.

“I think he’s a special player. Obviously, people will not talk as much as they will about Garnacho because Garnacho scores goals, does assists and everything. But what he puts on the game, what he gives to the team, it’s known to anyone (in the squad).

“I think he has great players in front of him to learn (from) because he plays with one of the best in the world like Casemiro. Also Sofyan (Amrabat) who plays in that position that is really good and he’s getting everything from them.

“He wants to learn, is eager to learn and I think that’s probably the best capability he has because he wants to learn every time. He’s eager to listen to everyone to get better and better.”
