REACTION Bobby Clark on first Premier League start, Forest win and Klopp backing
Bobby Clark reflected on a perfect end to his first Premier League start after Liverpool’s dramatic late victory over Nottingham Forest.
Darwin Nunez headed home a 99th-minute goal at the City Ground on Saturday – delivering a 1-0 win, maintaining the Reds’ place at the top of the table and sparking wild scenes of celebration among the travelling supporters.
For Clark the day was extra-special, with the 19-year-old handed the first league start of his professional career by Jürgen Klopp.
The midfielder featured for an hour before being replaced by Wataru Endo, and afterwards he spoke to Liverpoolfc.com about his pride and emotion.
“Oh, a great way for it to end!” said Clark. “Obviously I was grateful to get my first Premier League start.
“When I came off, obviously things were out of my control. But I knew that something was coming and [to do that] late was top!”
He continued: “It’s mad but I always had the feeling we were going to do something with the top players we’ve got in the front of the pitch, and Alexis [Mac Allister] with the calmness at the end and Darwin putting it in, it was top!”

Clark had previously started Liverpool’s Emirates FA Cup fifth-round win over Southampton at Anfield last Wednesday, and was one of seven players to retain their place in Klopp’s XI for the trip to Forest.
“It was [Friday] in training when we were doing our work for the game,” he said, when asked when he had found out he was starting again.
“I was decent but I thought I could have done a lot more in what I know I can do, but it was alright.”
Liverpool’s young players have been front and centre in recent weeks, with the likes of Jayden Danns, Lewis Koumas and James McConnell also attracting attention with their impressive showings at senior level.
Having followed up his own impact in the Carabao Cup final with outings in the FA Cup and now the league, England youth international Clark says he is enjoying the challenge of adapting to life at the top level.
“It all comes from the gaffer and all the players,” he said. “They fill you with confidence and they let you do your thing, so it comes from there.
“That’s the main thing. If you don’t have a manager like that, it’s going to be much harder. Whenever I’m coming on or starting, he just lets me do my thing and fills me with confidence.”

Liverpool caught cold as Bayern Munich near huge coup with five-year offer to be accepted
Steve Pearson 1 hour ago
Schalke starlet Assan Ouedraogo
Bayern Munich look to have beaten Liverpool to the punch
Bayern Munich have caught Liverpool napping, with a report claiming the German giants are primed to see a five-year contract offer accepted.
Bayern Munich and Liverpool are both entrenched in the race to appoint Xabi Alonso as their next manager. Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp will leave their respective posts at the end of the season. It’s been speculated Tuchel could be given his marching orders early if Bayern fail to advance past Lazio in the Champions League Round of 16.
At present, the signs point towards Liverpool being the ones to secure an agreement for Alonso.
TEAMtalk has learned a three-year contract offer is on the table and initial talks between the Reds and Alonso’s camp have been positive.
Furthermore, Sky Germany revealed Alonso has a ‘verbal promise’ with Bayer Leverkusen. The in-house agreement relates to Alonso having permission to leave the club THIS SUMMER if a suitable offer is lodged.
Sky Germany claimed that in the absence of a release clause, Liverpool must fork out a fee in the region of €15m-€25m to prise Alonso out of Leverkusen.
But while Liverpool look set to beat Bayern to Alonso, journalist Rudy Galetti claims it’s Bayern who’ll sink Liverpool when it comes to a key transfer target.
Klopp to be denied final transfer wish?
Back in October German reporter Florian Plettenberg confirmed Liverpool were sizing up Schalke sensation, Assan Ouedraogo.
The 17-year-old has burst onto the scene in the Bundesliga 2 this season and is a regular for Germany at Under-17 level.
Ouedraogo is a classy and powerful central midfielder and owing to his 6ft 4in height, has drawn early comparisons to Paul Pogba.
Pogba’s late-career decline and subsequent four-year ban for doping have left a stain on the Frenchman’s name.
However, it’s important to remember Pogba was among the world’s leading central midfielders during the early part of his career at Juventus and was a guaranteed starter for a hugely successful France side.
“Liverpool and especially Jurgen Klopp is monitoring the development of Assan Ouedraogo,” the Sky Deutschland reporter revealed in October.
“The 17 y/o versatile midfielder from Schalke has a release clause in 2024. Clubs from abroad have to pay around €20m (£17m).”
But according to Galetti on Monday, it’s Bayern Munich who’ll be the ones to snap up Ouedraogo.
Bayern nip in for German Pogba
Taking to X, Galetti stated: “Bayern are advancing in talks with Ouedraogo.
“The Schalke central midfielder – whose contract expires in 2027 – received a five-year proposal from Bayern and seems inclined to accept.
“RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt are still interested in him, while no concrete move from Liverpool so far.”
Why Liverpool have not made their move was not made clear. It may be that the Reds no longer hold serious interest in the player.
Alternatively, the impending exit of Klopp – who Plettenberg suggested was the driving force behind Liverpool’s interest – could be a factor.
Nonetheless, unless Liverpool act quickly, it appears Ouedraogo will be heading to Munich.

Liverpool CEO takes up new role with FSG – hints at new club appointment
March 4, 2024
Joanna Durkan
Liverpool are undergoing significant changes not only in the backroom but in the club’s hierarchy, with CEO, Billy Hogan, the latest to see his role altered at top level.
The club finds itself needing a new sporting director, manager and backroom staff all within the space of a few months, with a lot hinging on owners FSG making the right appointments.
And despite the season of change the club already finds itself in, last week, Hogan, CEO of Liverpool FC, was named CEO of FSG International.
The announcement came during FSG’s owners’ meeting, with Hogan to oversee the management of FSG’s entire enterprise, which is continuing to grow across various sports around the world.
A statement from FSG on Hogan’s promotion said: “This moment in FSG’s expansion marks a fitting occasion to formalise our leadership structure, recognising the ongoing contributions and responsibilities shouldered by Sam [Kennedy, Red Sox CEO] and Billy across our entire portfolio.”
SINGAPORE – Friday, July 28, 2023: Liverpool’s Chief Executive Officer Billy Hogan during a LFC Foundation and Special Olympics Asia event at the Tanglin Trust School ahead of the Singapore Festival of Football pre-season tournament. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)
“We know our people are our greatest asset, and in Sam and Billy, we have two of the most accomplished executives in the industry whose enduring contributions stand out even more as original hires by FSG over two decades ago.”
It has been suggested that the promotion will not impact Hogan’s day-to-day role at Liverpool, but it will to a certain extent considering how vast FSG’s portfolio is becoming.
The change follows Liverpool’s attempt to lure former sporting director Michael Edwards back to Merseyside, with a restructuring of the club on the cards as he seeks greater control.
In a report from the Times‘ Paul Joyce, Edwards would “seek total control of football operations at Liverpool in order to consider coming back to Anfield less than two years after his departure.”
Edwards, if he came back in that position, would effectively take on the role of FSG president Michael Gordon, who is heavily involved in the running of the club, and could lessen some of Hogan’s responsibilities.
It is no wonder, then, that Liverpool continue to push for Edwards’ return, as the transfer guru already knows the club inside out and a restructuring of the club and FSG as a whole makes this the ideal time to see him assume more power.
Nevertheless, Hogan’s promotion, the pursuit of Edwards and Klopp’s departure ensures this a significant period for a club that is soon to be in a period of transition, something they have not had to encounter for nearly nine years.

Fabrizio Romano thinks £79m player will leave after Liverpool started tracking him

Liverpool may have no sporting director, nor a new manager for the the summer yet. However, that doesn’t mean that the club’s recruitment team is sitting around idle. The Reds will already be tracking potential candidates, and seeking out prospective signings for the summer transfer window.
One area where Liverpool could be looking to strengthen is in attack. This season has shown that while Liverpool have some exciting attackers, the Reds could probably do with another option in attack.
All five first team offensive players have been out injured at some point this season. This has meant even midfielders like Harvey Elliott and Dominik Szoboszlai have been forced to play in the front three at certain points during the campaign.
Having another option in there could give Liverpool a much needed extra boost in attack. The kind of boost that could help the Reds propel forward again next season. And according to Fabrizio Romano, there is one player on Liverpool’s radar, who is considering leaving his current club this summer.

Pedro Neto latest
Pedro Neto has previously been linked with a £79m move to Liverpool. And now Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the player is looking to leave Wolves at the end of the season.
“Wolves have not communicated any price tag for Pedro Neto but the feeling, speaking to sources, is that in the summer he is expected to join a very important club,” Romano said on the Here We Go podcast.
“He has been on the list of many clubs in recent years, a few years ago he was really appreciated by Arsenal, and then Liverpool and also other clubs started following him.”
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Neto is a fantastic player, who really suits Liverpool’s style of play. His explosive speed can hurt any opponent, and there is no question he would be a huge boost for the Reds. However, the question will be just how much Wolves will want for his services.
The Reds will not want to overspend, and it seems like Wolves will be looking to hold out for a pretty hefty fee. If that will be the case, we can see Liverpool turning elsewhere.

Nottingham Forest fans were understandably upset after watching their side give away a late goal against Liverpool but their treatment of one young fan was disgusting.
As the full-time whistle blew, the fume from the home supporters behind our bench was toxic and it soon became clear that a young Red and his mother were in among it all.

This led to Andy Robertson and several members of our coaching staff collecting the youngster and taking him to safety.
Being upset after conceding a goal is understandable but there’s no reason to treat anyone like this, especially someone so young.

‘Exceptional’ 23-year-old Liverpool player finally returned from injury yesterday
Mon 4 March 2024 09:00
Bence Bocsak
During the last few weeks while everything has gone according to plan for Liverpool on the pitch, the same cannot be said for what’s happened off it. Injuries have haunted Jurgen Klopp’s side. It seems like game by game, more and more players have fallen due to injury.
However, things are changing in a positive direction. Over the weekend, both Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai returned to action. The former even grabbed the headlines coming to Liverpool’s rescue by scoring a last-minute winner for the Reds against Nottingham Forest.
There could be more positive news this week with Mohamed Salah expected to be back in action for the Reds. And it’s not just those three who are on the return. Yesterday, another Liverpool star returned to action for the club’s U21 side.

Rhys Williams returned to action for Liverpool
23-year-old Rhys Williams has been out injured for a while. After coming back from his loan spell at Port Vale, the Liverpool defender hasn’t been able to feature in training or in a competitive match. However, yesterday he finally returned.
Williams came back into action for Liverpool lining up for the club’s U21 side against Aston Villa. It wasn’t the best of returns though for the defender with the young Reds’ losing 2-0 to their opponents.
It’s great to see Williams back though. He has always been highly rated at the club’s academy. And he even impressed for the first team during the 2021/22 season. A few years ago in a press conference, Klopp described him as an ‘exceptional’ player.
Now, what comes next for Williams remains to be seen. He’s been quite unfortunate with his last few loans spells. He couldn’t get in the squad at Aberdeen during the beginning of this season. Meanwhile, he picked up an injury at Port Vale after going there on loan in January and returned to the Reds without having featured for his loan side.

‘It’s not great’: Roy Keane makes Liverpool admission moments after Man City beat Man United

Roy Keane admitted Pep Guardiola’s record at Anfield was ‘not great’ ahead of his Manchester City side’s trip to Merseyside.
Of course, there are far from many outfits with a glowing record at L4 in recent years since Jurgen Klopp took over in 2015.
“Well it’s not great, but the rest of his record is pretty good,” the Irishman spoke on Sky Sports.
“When you see records like that you think that can be broken in terms of the percentages of getting results there.
“But it’s going to be very difficult, because Liverpool are obviously hanging in there in terms of grinding out results like they did yesterday.
“It’s going to be very, very difficult, but Pep and Man City are more than capable of going down and getting a result – a result being maybe a draw even.
“But yeah, that record’s not great, but not many teams have great records at Anfield.”

Key men returning could be key
The sight of Dominik Szoboszlai making a cameo along with goalscorer Darwin Nunez will have been seriously reassuring.
Mo Salah, though not present at the City Ground, is also expected to make a recovery in time for City’s visit.
How much of a part the Egyptian is able to play remains to be seen.
In the meantime, we shouldn’t forget the contributions of younger stars Bobby Clark, Conor Bradley, Jayden Danns and the like.
Some, or all, to varying degrees, could be called upon to make an impact next Sunday.

(Images) What happened to Konate & Danns amid Forest furore should shock fans more than goal controversy

Before we begin an unnecessary witchhunt against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, it’s important to bear in mind a few other facts about the officiating that took place.
As James Pearce rightly noted on the contentious decision itself: “So much happened after [Caoimhin] Kelleher restarted the game and before the goal.”
Those suggesting that Paul Tierney – for goodness sake, actually repeat the referee’s name out loud five times – was tilted towards the Reds might need to give their head a good old wobble.
We’re talking about the same official Klopp has expressed concern about for quite some time now. The very sight of the 43-year-old’s name on our fixtures sets hairs on end.
The decisions that didn’t go Liverpool’s way
The failure to penalise a high boot on Ibrahima Konate, for one, is pretty poor on its own. Remember the failure to penalise Danilo after dragging down Jayden Danns in the Forest box?
If anything, Nottingham Forest got off lightly with the officiating at the City Ground.
You can catch the image and clip below, courtesy of James Pearce’s X account and LFCTV:
So much happened after Kelleher restarted the game and before the goal.
Forest should be more angry with Hudson-Odoi/Awoniyi for trying to dribble the ball out of their own box just before Mac Allister’s cross.

Liverpool have won the 2023/24 Carabao Cup, beating Chelsea at Wembley Stadium thanks to a 118th minute header from Virgil van Dijk.
Following a swathe of missed chances, disallowed goals and goalmouth scrambles, the final looked destined to go to a penalty shootout, however Liverpool captain popped up late in the game to nod home a Kostas Tsimikas corner kick to win the game.
The trophy is the first of a potential quadruple for the Reds in Jurgen Klopp’s final season in charge.
It was Chelsea who largely dominated the opening exchanges of the game, with Liverpool having to rely on a truly stunning stop from Caoimhin Kelleher to deny Cole Palmer and the offside flag ruling out a Raheem Sterling effort to keep Mauricio Pochettino’s side at bay.
The tide surprisingly turned in the game after Ryan Gravenberch was carted off following a heavy challenge from Moises Caicedo. Jurgen Klopp’s decision to shift Conor Bradley into the middle of the park as an emergency number eight proved to be a shrewd one, as the Reds began to assert themselves in the game thereafter.
This good period prior to half-time for Liverpool culminated in Cody Gakpo – in for the injured Darwin Nunez – cannoning a header off the post.
Liverpool’s ascendancy continued into the second half, and Virgil van Dijk had thought he’d given his side a vital 1-0 lead on the hour mark after he’d rose highest in the heart of the penalty area to head him. However, following a lengthy VAR check, the goal was ruled out due to Wataru Endo blocking Van Dijk’s marker Levi Colwill from an offside position. A contentious decision, to say the very least.
Buoyed by surving that scare, Chelsea went up the other end and created a few chances of their own in the dying embers of the game. The best of which fell to midfielder Conor Gallagher, who redirected a low cross from Palmer past a routed Kelleher and, unfortunately for Blues fans, off the wrong side of the post.
Despite a total of 31 shots being taken throughout the 90 minutes of action – 12 of which were on target – the game went to extra time.
The chances continue to come in the extra 30 minutes, with youngster Jaylen Danns forcing Djordje Petrovic into a smart save with a headed effort and Harvey Elliott drilling an effort into the side-netting.
Liverpool eventually made their dominance of extra time count with two minutes to go when Van Dijk headed home the winning goal.

Jamie Redknapp was left stunned by referee Chris Kavanagh’s decision not to caution Moises Caicedo for a “disgusting” challenge on Ryan Gravenberch.
The Liverpool man was forced off on a stretcher after Caicedo’s first-half lunge. Jurgen Klopp has been dealt several injury woes in recent weeks and Gravenberch looks set to join them on the treatment table.

Reds supporters raged online when Caicedo escaped treatment, with many believing the midfielder should have seen red. Klopp – as well as crocked forward Mohamed Salah – were visibly furious following the attempt to in the ball.
During the game, former referee Mike Dean agreed with the on-field decision, insisting the lunge did not showcase serious foul play. He said: “I think he’s caught his foot on his (Ryan Gravenberch’s) foot.
“I know the VAR can’t inform the referee but tackles like that, he’s seen a foul, tried to play on that’s when you say to the referee ‘It’s not serious foul play but it’s a yellow card’. It is a yellow card offence, no doubt whatsoever.”

However, former Liverpool star Redknapp went further, slamming Caicedo for his “clumsy” challenge. He added in the studio: “It’s not a great challenge. It’s extremely clumsy. I think it always is worse when a player’s foot is planted. You can see here, that as Gravenberch makes the challenge, his foot is planted. It looks disgusting.

“You can see here, that Caicedo is not looking where the ball is going. You can see why he (Gravenberch) comes off. It’s definitely a yellow card. I can see why Jurgen Klopp was so upset and disappointed with it.”

Van Dijk’s goal on the hour mark was ruled out.
Liverpool fans were left feeling hard done by after Virgil van Dijk’s goal in the second half was ruled out for offside.

Van Dijk headed home on the hour mark to give Jurgen Klopp’s side the lead after Chelsea had also had a goal chalked off in the first half.
But following a VAR check, the Dutchman’s header was classed as offside after Wataru Endo, who denied Levi Colwill the chance to get back and defend, stood in an offside position.

Fans felt though that Endo hadn’t interfered with play and were therefore baffled by the decision to disallow the goal.

“From a strictly neutral view, it feels at times as if VAR is using a fine toothcomb to find a reason to disallow goals. That Liverpool one would have stood in every single year pre-2020. Overthinking it all,” wrote one person on X (formerly.
“Absolutely shocking that is given as offside. The fact the rules are like this. Where we are saying that Colwell would have been there is a joke. Endo blocks. Doesn’t impede Chilwell at all. Blockers have been in the game since forever, for a reason,” added a second.
“Technical offside ? Deary me, what is happening to our game,” commented a third.

A fourth said: “VAR has ruined football fact…”

Carabao Cup final: Why Virgil van Dijk goal was disallowed for offside in Chelsea vs Liverpool

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk saw his goal against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final controversially ruled out for offside.
The defender held off Ben Chilwell to thump home what he thought was the opening goal in a tense clash at Wembley Stadium.
But after a long wait for a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check, the goal was ruled out for a “technical offside.”
Van Dijk was not offside, so why was it ruled out?
SKY SPORTS
Replays showed that Wataru Endo was in an offside position when the free kick was sent in and as he blocked Levi Colwill from marking Van Dijk, the goal was disallowed.
Both Colwill and Chilwell were tasked with marking Van Dijk, who scored in his last Liverpool game and has three goals to his name this season.
It is up for debate if Colwill even would have been able to prevent Van Dijk from scoring but Endo was deemed to be interfering with play so the goal had to be chalked off.
AP
Standard Sport’s chief football reporter Dan Kilpatrick reported on the incident from Wembley: “That feels like another big VAR decision which has set a precedent that will be impossible to uphold in future.
“Those kind of blocks happen at every set piece at this level. Are they all really going to be policed in the same way from now on?”

Chelsea vs Liverpool – LIVE!
The first major trophy of the English football season is the prize on offer this afternoon as Chelsea face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley. It is a repeat of the 2022 final in this competition, when Liverpool won a remarkable penalty shootout 11-10 after a goalless 120 minutes.
Chelsea go in search of the first trophy of the Todd Boehly era, while Mauricio Pochettino is also yet to pick up silverware as a manager in England. The Blues go into the match as underdogs, but will have taken plenty of confidence from their performance last time out, when holding Manchester City to a draw.
As for Liverpool, they are still in the hunt for four trophies as they look to send Jurgen Klopp out on a high in his final season in charge. They beat Chelsea 4-1 just a few weeks ago, but they do now have a huge injury list to contend with. Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai all miss out on the squad, in a significant triple blow. Follow all the action with Standard Sport’s LIVE blog below, featuring expert analysis from Nizaar Kinsella nad Dan Kilpatrick at Wembley!

Liverpool trio miss out
An obvious place to start – Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez are not even named on the bench for Liverpool.
Huge blow for Jurgen Klopp to be without the trio this afternoon, adding to a lengthy injury list.
It means Harvey Elliott and Cody Gakpo get their chance in the front three, with Ryan Gravenberch continuing in midfield.

Liverpool the favourites?
Mauricio Pochettino insists that Liverpool are favourites to win the Carabao Cup final.
The Argentine was commenting in response to Jurgen Klopp saying earlier this week that his depleted Reds side are “definitely not” the favourites.
Liverpool have between seven and 10 players out injured for the final, with Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai all facing late fitness tests.
“Of course, I think Liverpool are the favourites,” Pochettino said on Friday. “In the last few years, they have experience of competing as a team and being in finals.
“Our players are not only new to this competition, Premier League and Carabao Cup, but for some, this is their first final. In my opinion, I make them favourites.
“But he is clever enough to say, ‘no, it is 50/50’. Yes, for sure [they are favourites]. It is always like this.”

Beware of the press
Chelsea were dominated by Liverpool’s press in the 4-1 defeat at Anfield last month.
The intensity of Klopp’s famously dubbed ‘heavy metal football’ forced Chelsea into making mistakes, including giving away a penalty.
But Pochettino’s side showed since they could play through Pep Guardiola’s equally impressive press last weekend, creating several counter-attacks, including the opening for Raheem Sterling’s goal.
It could be another chess match this afternoon.

Silva set to miss out
Thiago Silva is not expected to be named in the Chelsea squad this afternoon.
The centre-back was a doubt for the Blues, having picked up a groin injury a couple of weeks ago.
He has stepped up his recovery in recent days, but Silva is likely to not even be named on the bench at Wembley.

Caicedo and Fernandez must deliver
Theoretically, the one area where Chelsea should outgun Liverpool is in midfield.
Chelsea beat Liverpool to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton for £115million, having secured Enzo Fernandez from under their noses.
After missing out on two key targets, Jurgen Klopp signed Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch instead.
Liverpool, however, have kept winning on the pitch, and it is up to Chelsea’s hugely expensive duo to change the conversation.

Can Chelsea outgun Liverpool?
No Premier League team has scored more than Liverpool this season.
The Reds’ five main attackers have 67 goals in all competitions — Mohamed Salah (19), Diogo Jota (14), Darwin Nunez (13), Cody Gakpo (11) and Luis Diaz (10).
By contrast, Chelsea’s top five forwards have scored 37 times. Amid such a huge disparity, the question is, who will be the match-winner?
The Blues’ task will be helped if Salah and Nunez are unavailable, with Jota already ruled out…

Liverpool now ready to move to sign £17million manager to replace Klopp – Report
February 25, 2024 Sahil 0 Comments newsnow
If reports in the media are anything to go by then Alonso is set to reject Liverpool, who are now ready to intensify move to sign Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP to replace Klopp.
According to an exclusive story covered by TEAMtalk, the Bayer Leverkusen manager has multiple reasons to reject a return to Anfield.
News – 4-3-3: Liverpool strongest possible XI vs Chelsea with Salah and Nunez
In such a scenario, Liverpool are ready to step up plans to hire the services of Amorim, who has done wonders at Sporting CP.
Alonso and his family are happy in Germany and the Spaniard would not mind staying at Leverkusen, who are favorites to win their first ever Bundesliga title this season.
On the other hand, the 42-year-old views the Liverpool opportunity as ‘right job, wrong time’ and has concerns about replacing a legendary figure like Jurgen Klopp.
Amorim has already won the Liga Nos title with Sporting CP, who will collide against Rio Ave tonight knowing that a point will put them back on top of the table.
Last month, Correio da Manha revealed that English clubs will have to activate the release clause of £17million to sign the Portuguese boss.
For now, the manager is focused on helping the Lions win the title and in the latest press conference, he stated:
“I’m not going to dwell on the future. What I had to say I have already said and when I talk about it the topic comes up again. I just want to beat Rio Ave and the rest will soon be seen.”
Have your say – Should Liverpool sign Ruben Amorim if Alonso decides to turn down a move to Anfield?

Predicted Liverpool lineup against Chelsea: Gakpo to start; Salah, Nunez doubts
by Saikat Chatterjee February 25, 2024 12:00 pm Reading Time: 3 mins read
Home » news » Predicted Liverpool lineup against Chelsea: Gakpo to start; Salah, Nunez doubts
Cody Gakpo will start for Liverpool against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
Liverpool are in impressive form right now, and they are well-positioned to do well across multiple competitions. They are currently on top of the league table and they have made it to the knockout runs of the UEFA Europa League as well.
The Reds are still very much in the race to win the FA Cup and they will want to win the League Cup as well when they lock horns with Chelsea in Sunday’s final at Wembley. However, they have a number of injury problems, which could be a major issue.
Liverpool are without star keeper Alisson Becker. Caoimhin Kelleher will deputise in his absence. In the back four, Trent Alexander-Arnold misses out with an injury. Conor Bradley will start instead of him. Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk will form the central defensive unit, with Andrew Robertson as the left-back. Bradley and Robertson will look to help out in the attack and protect the defensive unit.
In the midfield, Wataru Endo will start as the defensive midfielder, with Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch alongside him. The two players will add creativity and control. Endo will provide defensive cover to the side. Dominik Szoboszlai, Thiago Alcantara and Curtis Jones will miss out.
Diogo Jota is ruled out in the attack. Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez are doubtful. So, Cody Gakpo is set to lead the line for Liverpool here with Harvey Elliott and Luis Diaz alongside him.
Speaking about the fitness situation of players ahead of the game, Lijnders said, “We come in a crazy schedule again, so we play every three days. It’s important for us to use each minute, use each day to really look how the players are. This is for Mo, Dom and Darwin. Two training sessions to go, let’s see how they are and then we can make a decision in the last minute.”
“All the others, we know it’s longer. Ali has a muscle injury. Trent, LCL. Jota, medial ligament, MCL. Curtis [has] a high ankle sprain. They will be longer out. Curtis is probably the first one [to come back] around the international break. All the others will be after the international break.”
Predicted Liverpool XI: Kelleher; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Endo, Gravenberch; Elliott, Gakpo, Diaz

The Times report “world class” Liverpool favourite wanted in big-money move
BY
HENRY JACKSON
PUBLISHED 1 HOUR AGO
What a blow this would be for the Reds this summer.
john-henry-fsg-net-worth-liverpool
A “world class” Liverpool star is wanted in a big-money move during the summer transfer window, according to an update from The Times’ Paul Hirst.
Liverpool transfer news
Jurgen Klopp may be leaving Anfield at the end of the season, but that hasn’t stopped FSG already eyeing up summer signings, ensuring whoever comes in to replace the German is greeted with a couple of welcome gifts.
A shock move for Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite has been mooted, in a transfer that wouldn’t go down well at all at Goodison Park. Sporting CP ace Goncalo Inacio also continues to be backed to head to Liverpool, as has been the case for some time now, with the Portuguese seen as arguably one of Europe’s most exciting young defenders.
jean-clair-todibo-goncalo-inacio-liverpool-opinion
Another potential defensive reinforcement is Crystal Palace central defender Marc Guehi, with the England international likely to leave Selhurst Park in the summer transfer window. A move to a bigger club feels on the cards, given his quality as a player.
Brazilian youngster Luis Guilherme has also been linked with a switch to the Reds, and the same applies to Juventus and France midfielder Adrien Rabiot, should Liverpool feel the need to further bolster their midfield options. Almost as important as new signings is retaining the services of some of the most important players at Anfield, however, and a big update has dropped regarding one such figure.
Reds star linked with another big money move
According to The Times’ Hirst, Mohamed Salah is wanted by Saudi Pro League clubs for a big-money move again this summer, with the Liverpool star one of a number of elite players being looked at.
mohamed-salah-liverpool-fantasy-premier-league
Losing Salah doesn’t bear thinking about for the Reds, and while some may be willing to see him leave for an astronomical fee – he turns 32 in the summer – he still has so much to offer at the very top level. The manner in which the Egyptian King looks after himself means he should be able to replicate the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and play well into his 30s, and he is still comfortably Liverpool’s most consistent and productive attacking player.
In truth, it is no great surprise that Salah is wanted by Saudi clubs, considering they no doubt see him as a poster boy for the Saudi Pro League, but it would be bitterly disappointing to see him join what is a far inferior division to the Premier League.

Salah’s current deal runs out in the summer of 2025, so it is clear that this year is when a big decision needs to made when it comes to his future, but a new contract should be handed to him, not only as a reward for so many years of brilliance – he has been called “world class” by Klopp – but also because he still has so much left in the tank for Liverpool.
