Manchester City suffer huge transfer blow as Premier League rival agrees personal terms with £70 million

Manchester City have suffered a major setback in their pursuit of Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

The 21-year-old is expected to make a big-money move away from Goodison Park this summer, as Everton look to raise funds amid continued financial and ownership issues at the Merseyside club.

The sale of centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite could boost Everton’s financial outlook, with the Englishman emerging as a transfer target for several Premier League clubs this summer, including Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Branthwaite, who was surprisingly axed by Gareth Southgate for England’s 26-man squad for the European Championship in Germany, featured in 35 Premier League matches for Everton during the recent campaign.

The defender spent time at Blackburn Rovers and PSV prior to breaking into Sean Dyche’s first-team at Goodison, with three goals and 41 appearances across all competitions for Branthwaite this term.

The Englishman signed a new contract with Everton in October until 2027, but is reportedly a target for Manchester United, Real Madrid, Tottenham and Manchester City after an impressive campaign on Merseyside.

Etihad bosses were claimed in March to be ‘monitoring developments’ of the 21-year-old, with Manchester City believing that the defender shows similar traits to John Stones, and being ‘intent to keep competition high’ within Guardiola’s squad.

Manchester City could be set to miss out on signing the Everton defender however, after The Times revealed that Branthwaite had agreed personal terms with rivals Manchester United, offering wages of between £150,000 and £160,000 a week.

Manchester United still need to agree a transfer fee with Everton, who are set to command around £70 million to sell the centre-back this summer.

Manchester City currently have an array of defensive options, with Ruben Dias, John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake and Josko Gvardiol all at Guardiola’s disposal.

The Sky Blues paid £77.6 million to add Gvardiol from RB Leipzig last summer, with the 22–year-old having won the Premier League title and scored five goals during his maiden season at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola has been full of praise for Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan and says he’s one of the smartest players he’s ever coached.

Gundogan left City on a free transfer last summer and moved on to Barcelona where he was a virtual ever-present under Xavi.

Pep says that Gundogan’s intelligence makes him a cut above most players and explained why he found it so rewarding to work with the Germany international.

“İlkay didn’t talk much, but when he did, everyone listened to him, including me as a coach. It was clear and direct. He is a very intelligent player, one of the smartest I have ever coached. He was the key to our success,” he said.

“A player can be fast, he can have a good shot, but what makes him stand out from the rest and become an elite player is his intelligence. Making the right decisions under pressure, knowing what the team needs at all times, that’s the type of player I’m looking for. I love smart players. I only had to explain everything to İlkay once. He understood it and put it into practice immediately. That is extraordinary.”

Guardiola also went on to highlight Gundogan’s strengths and feels he has the potential to get into double figures when it comes to scoring goals.

“[He is best at] is playing the ball in small, confined spaces. For example, as a number ten, behind the center forward. But he also provides passes to the full-backs,” he added.

“The nose for finding the right moment, the control of the ball and the precision of his passes: all this is exceptional in İlkay. I have to add that İlkay himself is a good scorer. He can easily score between ten and fifteen goals per season.”

Gundogan scored just five goals in his first season in La Liga with Barcelona but is now set to link up with former Germany boss Hansi Flick in Catalunya.

The chairman of Manchester City, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, has stated that Rodrigo, a defensive midfield star, is very important to the way the first team team plays.

The Spaniard first joined the team in a high-profile summer deal from Atletico Madrid during the 2019 transfer window, and he has been a mainstay in the Premier League champions for the last five seasons.

When Rodri joined the team, duties at the Etihad Stadium were quite high due to the fact that the highly regarded Madrid graduate was expected to replace the iconic Fernandinho at the club.

Rodri has Now established himself as one of the greatest names in his industry thanks to his increased production at game-changing moments and midfield dominance. Khaldoon Al Mubarak, the chairman of Manchester City, is the most recent person to commend him.

“The level of standard of excellence is extraordinary,” Al Mubarak said during his annual end-of-season interview with ManCity.com, speaking off the back of yet another English top-flight success – City’s fourth in succession.

“He is extraordinary! The position he plays is not a glamorous position but he is absolutely fundamental to this team and one of the most critical reasons why we continue to win and succeed and achieve what we are achieving.”

Though officials in the Premier League champions’ recruitment staff are still searching for a more capable backup to Rodrigo than Kalvin Phillips; therefore, a defensive midfielder could still arrive at the Etihad this summer.

TRANSFERSFrom Sam Lee: Julian Alvarez’s ‘first-choice’ destination revealed amid Manchester City exit talkPublished: 15:30 on June 11th 2024 | Last Updated: 15:30 on June 11th 2024By Freddie Pye

The ‘first-choice’ destination of Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez has been named amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Argentine’s immediate future.

Despite his best season to date at the Etihad Stadium, scoring and providing assists from a number of positions in Pep Guardiola’s system, Alvarez is seemingly opening the door to a Manchester City exit in the coming weeks.

Unsurprisingly, the FIFA World Cup winner with Argentina will not be short of options should he look to formalise his interest in an exit with City bosses, with the likes of Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain understood to be interested.

Other reports have also linked Alvarez with interest from within the Premier League, with Chelsea listed as a potential suitor as Manchester City eye a transfer fee north of £70 million, according to some reports.

However, neither of the three aforementioned clubs takes the crown as the player’s ‘first-choice’ destination should he leave the Etihad Stadium, despite La Liga being his preferred next step in the European game.

That is according to the information of The Athletic’s Sam Lee, who reveals that not only has Alvarez been open to a move away from City for ‘several months’, but that the Argentine’s ‘first-choice’ destination is Real Madrid, despite that not going to happen this summer.

Despite the unlikely nature of a move to the Santiago Bernabeu in the coming weeks and months, the report details that the 24-year-old is thought to want more first-team football than what is currently on offer at the Etihad Stadium.

Los Blancos have already been active in the summer transfer period, despite the market not being officially open for business until Friday, having recruited Kylian Mbappe on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side will be more than familiar with the talents of Julian Alvarez, having come up against the Argentine in both of his seasons since moving into the European game from River Plate.

Alvarez already has history with Real Madrid however, having had trials with both Boca Juniors and the Spanish capital club; scoring twice in five games for Los Blancos in a youth tournament. However, Alvarez was unable to join Real due to age restrictions.

NEWSManchester City’s Erling Haaland says he is now ‘getting tired’ of hearing his own namePublished: 08:00 on October 14th 2023 | Last Updated: 23:55 on October 13th 2023By Freddie Pye

Erling Haaland has admitted while on international duty with Norway that he is ‘getting tired’ of hearing his own name, such is the level of fame he has now reached.

The Manchester City centre-forward has taken his global recognition to fresh heights since joining Pep Guardiola’s ongoing project at the Etihad Stadium, having won the Premier League and Champions League in his first season with the club.

Such is the level of fame that Erling Haaland has reached, that the 23-year-old Leeds-born sensation is now frequently hounded for photographs, autographs, or merchandise at both club level and with his international side.

Speaking after Norway’s 0-4 European Championship qualification victory over Cyprus earlier this week, Erling Haaland admitted that such is his level of fame in the game that he is now “getting tired” of hearing his own name.

Following a game in which the Manchester City striker netted another two goals, security personnel at the contest were forced on to the pitch to help the Norwegian striker deal with a number of supporters who wanted pictures and the chance to take his match shirt.

“Of course, I greatly appreciate the support,” Erling Haaland clarified after the incident and the game as a whole. “That’s what I wanted to do when I was little, so I’m not particularly complaining about it.

The former Borussia Dortmund and RB Salzburg frontman continued, “I’m starting to get a little tired of my own name, but that’s how it is. There is not much I can do about it.”

Haaland will be hoping to transfer his fine goalscoring form with Stale Solbakken’s side over to the east of Manchester when the international break concludes, having found himself struggling to some extent in front of goal.

Despite providing 10 goal contributions across all competitions this season – level with teammate Julian Alvarez – many would have expected Haaland to have notched yet further, especially considering chances created and quality of opposition faced.

City return with a Premier League clash against Brighton & Hove Albion following the second international break of the season, before the UEFA Champions League returns with a match against BSC Young Boys, as well as the Manchester derby at Old Trafford.
