Edwards Will ‘Prioritise’ Contract Talks With Liverpool Trio

Liverpool will be keen to hold discussions over new contracts with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah

HIGHLIGHTS
Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards will be eager to open talks over new contracts with Liverpool trio Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.
Alexander-Arnold is being monitored by La Liga title-chasers Real Madrid ahead of the summer transfer window opening for business.
Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth believes that Liverpool will have to consider selling the trio if they cannot reach an agreement over fresh terms.
Liverpool will make negotiating fresh contracts with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah one of their ‘major priorities’, and Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has told GIVEMESPORT that Fenway Sports Group will have to seriously consider cashing in on the Anfield trio if they cannot convince them to sign on the dotted line.

The Reds are preparing to enter a new era as boss Jurgen Klopp is set to walk away from the dugout at the end of the season, due to ‘running out of energy’ over the course of his trophy-laden spell in the hot-seat, but they are keen to hold onto their key men ahead of the summer transfer window opening for business.

Richard Hughes, who has been appointed as Liverpool’s new sporting director and will assume his role after the campaign reaches its climax, will be tasked with leading the Merseyside giants’ recruitment drive and holding talks over new deals after joining Michael Edwards in bagging a crucial internal role.

Real Madrid Will Struggle to Meet Alexander-Arnold Demands

Liverpool would seek close to ÂŁ100million if Real Madrid up the ante in their pursuit of Alexander-Arnold, according to Goal, but he has shown no indications of wanting to embark on a fresh challenge and the La Liga title-chasers would struggle to stump up the cash needed to strike a deal.

The report suggests that the Reds are desperate to hold onto their academy graduate, who has gone on to make more than 300 appearances since breaking into the senior squad, and he would demand a salary package of more than ÂŁ275,000-per-week if a move to the Bernabeu becomes a serious prospect.

It is understood that Real Madrid are monitoring Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation after being put on red alert due to Liverpool stopping short of opening discussions over fresh terms, while statistics highlight that he has been producing better figures in various departments than Los Blancos’ Dani Carvajal this season.

Transfer insider Dean Jones recently told GIVEMESPORT that Alexander-Arnold, van Dijk and Salah will be keen to learn Klopp’s successor before committing their long-term futures to Liverpool, but they are not expected to push for an exit when the summer window opens in the coming months.

The trio are preparing to enter the final 12 months of their respective agreements, which allow them to pocket a combined total of ÂŁ750,000-per-week, and seeing any of them walk away as free agents at the end of the 2024/25 campaign would go down as woeful business after they have made a huge impact at Anfield.

Salah was among the leading Saudi Pro League targets during the early stages of the campaign, which resulted in Liverpool being forced to fend off a ÂŁ150million bid from Al-Ittihad a matter of hours before the window slammed shut in September, and further offers may be forthcoming.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Mohamed Salah is the third-highest earner in the Premier League, with Manchester City duo Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland being the only stars on a more lucrative contract

Dharmesh Sheth – Reds Will Have to Make Decision on Trio With Klopp’s Successor

Sheth understands that Hughes and Edwards, who was recruited as Fenway Sports Group’s chief executive of football earlier this month, will have already pinpointed holding contract discussions with Alexander-Arnold, van Dijk and Salah as one of their key objectives for the upcoming months.

But the Sky Sports reporter believes that Klopp’s replacement will also need to have a say on whether to reward the trio with lucrative fresh terms as, if they do not fit into the new chief’s plans, the Premier League title contenders will have to seriously consider sanctioning their exit.

Sheth told GIVEMESPORT:

“New contract talks will 100% be among Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes’ major priorities over the next few months.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold will enter the final year of his contract come the summer. Captain Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are in the same position.

“They are three huge names who have been completely vital to the success that Jurgen Klopp has had at Liverpool, but they are going to be out of contract within a year.

“When a player reaches the point of having 12 months left on his contract, it’s a case of Liverpool having to sell or renew. But that is all going to depend on the hierarchy at Liverpool and, of course, the new manager. Everyone is going to have to work together to find out which is the best way forward.”

Diaz Wants to Challenge Himself in La Liga

Luis Diaz’s father Mane has admitted that there is hope that he will eventually earn a move to La Liga, according to Spanish sources, having previously wanted to join heavyweights Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid before Liverpool came calling for his signature after impressing in a Porto shirt.

The report suggests that the Colombia international had held discussions with fellow countrymen Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez about what it is like to be on the books of one of the Spanish capital’s most-supported clubs, but the Reds were more eager to secure his services and ended up striking a deal worth up to ÂŁ49million in January 2022.

GIVEMESPORT sources recently revealed that Liverpool have no intention of selling Diaz during the summer, particularly as fellow wide-man Salah is expected to be the subject of a fresh bid from Saudi Arabia as they aim to take advantage of his precarious contract situation.

The Merseyside giants are in a strong negotiating position ahead of suitors potentially coming to the fore as the 27-year-old still has three years remaining on his ÂŁ55,000-per-week agreement at Anfield, meaning admirers will only have a chance of luring him away from the Premier League if a significant offer is made.

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has relived his role in Emmanuel Adebayor’s infamous celebration against Arsenal for Manchester City back in 2009.

The former Togo international spent two-and-a-half years at the Emirates before joining City ahead of the 2009/10 campaign. He came face to face with his old club in the early weeks of his career in Manchester and his emphatic response to scoring in a 4-2 win against the Gunners in September 2009 is widely regarded as one of the most memorable moments in Premier League history.

After scoring against his former employers, Adebayor sprinted the entire length of the field in order to goad the visiting Arsenal fans in the away end with an epic knee slide. He was subsequently booked for his actions by Clattenburg, who took charge of the match.

Clattenburg, who joined Nottingham Forest as a referee consultant earlier this year, has now bizarrely claimed he deserves credit for that moment – because he played advantage during the match.

“I cautioned Adebayor for inciting that small riot, of course, but it is amusing to think that infamous celebration might never have happened were it not for what I decided to do seconds earlier,” he explained in The Mail.

“Shaun Wright-Phillips had been fouled by Gael Clichy over on the right wing. My assistant had flagged for the foul but I signalled for the advantage to be played. Wright-Phillips got up off the ground, crossed the ball, and Adebayor headed it beyond Manuel Almunia before all hell broke loose.”

Adebayor defended his actions years later and urged Arsenal fans to “forget” his celebration. Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Gunners fan favourite said: “I think the fans can forget what happened in 2009 when I ran the length of the pitch.

“Today I will make it clear, I don’t think any human being would accept it if people were singing about and insulting your family, especially your mother and your father.”

He continued: “It’s behind me now, I hope it is behind them. We all love football. And every once in a while when they see that celebration on television and social media, hopefully now they can laugh it off and move on. That’s what I wish for the Arsenal fans and I wish them the best of luck this year.”

Jurgen Klopp registered his 300th win in charge of Liverpool with an enthralling 2-1 victory over Roberto de Zerbi’s Brighton to send them temporarily top of the Premier League.

Ahead of Manchester City’s meeting with Arsenal, live on Sky Sports, the Reds had the chance to succeed both fellow title challengers at the summit, but did not enjoy the start they envisaged after falling behind within 87 first-half seconds at Anfield.

Plucky Brighton are deliberately bold in De Zerbi’s mould, as proved by Simon Adingra, who flew down the left wing from kick off and fizzed a ball centrally towards Danny Welbeck. The forward benefitted from a ricochet off Pascal Gross, but there was no luck in the finish, as he lashed an instinctive volley inside the far post.

But Liverpool, embroiled in an intriguing three-way title hunt, were not to be denied. Luis Diaz found a response in the 27th minute to halt Brighton’s early momentum, capitalising on some clumsy Joel Veltman defending to pounce from close range and steer the ball beyond Bart Verbruggen.

That began Liverpool’s impressive road to recovery, as they abandoned their full-throttle first-half approach in favour of more measured, patient build up. It worked. Alexis Mac Allister, at the heart of everything good for the hosts, threaded a ball through to Mo Salah in the 65th minute and the Egyptian struck the decisive blow.

Chances came and went to kill the game dead, particularly for misfiring Salah, who attempted a record 12 shots (his most in a single game), but a one-goal margin of victory will satisfy Klopp as Liverpool chase Premier League glory in the German’s farewell season.

Liverpool edge out in front on 67 points, with Arsenal three points behind and Man City four adrift ahead of their heavyweight clash at Eithad Stadium on Super Sunday.

‘Absolutely outstanding’
Jamie Carragher thought £35m Liverpool man was incredible against Brighton

Jamie Carragher was left blown away by one Liverpool performance against Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield today.

Jurgen Klopp went into the game knowing that there was no margin for error, he needed his Liverpool players to do their job before Manchester City hosted Arsenal.

And with that in mind, Danny Welbeck’s early strike was less than ideal.

A moment of class meant it was going to be an uphill struggle for Liverpool against an impressive Roberto De Zerbi side.

Simon Adingra stood out in particular, perhaps a player Liverpool could show interest in were De Zerbi chosen as Klopp’s replacement.

And whilst that’s all very hypothetical for now, there was also an outstanding display by one player in a Liverpool shirt today.

Luis Diaz certainly deserves his praise for tirelessly inspiring the comeback, but it was Alexis Mac Allister who ultimately decided the game.

The ÂŁ35m-midfielder was exceptional playing in the pocket, and was at the heart of everything Liverpool did well.

Jamie Carragher amazed by Alexis Mac Allister’s Liverpool performance against Brighton today
Speaking during Sky Sports’ coverage of the game, Jamie Carragher was almost lost for words at how good Mac Allister was for Liverpool against Brighton today.

Carragher thought everything was going through the Argentinian, who was so key to the vital comeback.

Praising Mac Allister in the first half, he said: “Again that combination, Mac Allister to Mo Salah, Mac Allister has been absolutely outstanding in these first 39 minutes – best player on the pitch.”

Carragher then commented on the 25-year-old’s assist for Mohamed Salah’s goal.

He said: “Mo Salah has took till the 65th minute to find his shooting boots and what a relief it is to those people he’s saluting.

“But again, this is all down to that man Mac Allister, he’s been the best player on the pitch by a mile.

“When the game has been frantic, he’s been the man with the cool head.”

A brilliant display, and one that proved how vital Wataru Endo’s role in the team has been as well, allowing Mac Allister to play higher up the pitch today.

Carragher seemed to recognise very early on that Mac Allister would be the key for Liverpool against his old sign Brighton today, and he was certainly proved correct.

All that being said, Ian Wright wasn’t so convinced about a different performance.

Mo Salah had been enduring a frustrating afternoon at Anfield, but persistence paid off for the Egyptian, who fired Liverpool into the lead against Brighton on 65 minutes.

The Egyptian had already taken eight shots before he finally found a way past Bart Verbruggen, slamming the ball into the corner of the net from inside the penalty area.

It was an emphatic finish by the 31-year-old, who ensured that Alexis Mac Allister could be credited with a Louvre-worthy assist, playing the most exquisite of through balls to pick out the Reds’ number 11, who duly finished the chance.

A lethal combination coming good in Liverpool’s hour of need!

It’s fair to say that Liverpool fans at Anfield were far from pleased with one man in particular during the first half against Brighton this afternoon.

The teams were level at 1-1 going in at half-time, and while neither goal was controversial, a series of soft free kicks given against the home team had almost 60,000 Reds inside the stadium fuming at David Coote.

In the Liverpool Echo’s live matchday blog (14:53), it was noted that there were ‘huge boos’ for the official as the teams made their way off at half-time, with Ian Doyle adding: “It must be said the referee, though, is having an absolute shocker. [Jurgen] Klopp certainly won’t miss David Coote when he leaves Liverpool at the end of the season.”

Liverpool fans won’t be surprised in the least to see the free kick count at half-time – 11 to Brighton, just four for the Reds (Sofascore), with the visitors getting a series of charitable fouls given in their favour.

Coote also saw fit to show Alexis Mac Allister a yellow card for a foul on Simon Adingra which was soft, to put it mildly, and there was also a penalty shout when Pervis Estupinan impeded Darwin Nunez in the box in the opening minutes at Anfield.

Referees will always give debatable free kicks over the course of a match, but there was definitely a disproportionately high number of decisions called against the Reds which ranged from harsh to downright inexplicable.

As Doyle said during his half-time analysis, Klopp certainly won’t be sorry to see the back of some officials in the Premier League.
