Crystal Palace now want to sign Athletic Bilbao No.7 Alex Berenguer on a free transfer this summer.

That is according to AS in Spain.

So, what is the situation involving Alex Berenguer and Crystal Palace? Let’s take a look…

Well – according to AS – Dougie Freedman is paying close attention to the Spaniard, who will leave Athletic Bilbao when his contract expires in July.

Berenguer also has interest from Brentford and Wolves.

AS explain how Athletic Bilbao have already signed Alvaro Djalo in a €15m (£13m) deal from Braga to prepare for the 28-year-old’s summer exit.

Berenguer has become a fan favourite in the Basque Country ever since arriving in a £10m deal from Torino back in October 2020.

The man from Barañain has made a total of 159 appearances – scoring 27 goals while also providing 19 assists – and it speaks volumes about his reputation that fans even continue to herald him throughout games, according to AS, despite his decision to leave this summer.

Berenguer’s finest moment with Athletic Bilbao arguably came back in the 2021/22 campaign, when he scored a stunning 89th minute winner against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey quarter-final.

The Spaniard has seven goals and three assists in 31 appearances across all competitions this season.

Freedman has previously stuck gold with a free transfer from Spain when signing Vicente Guaita for nothing back in 2018.

Now, the Glaswegian could strike again with a clever move for Berenguer – who can play on either wing.

Oliver Glasner’s attacking options on the flank are pretty thin, with Jeffrey Schlupp far from the player he once was, and doubts over the future of Michael Olise at Selhurst Park.

Therefore, a free transfer for Berenguer – who has made 13 appearances on the left this season and six on the right – would make plenty of sense.
