Only referee could stop Dominik Szoboszlai as Hungary offers Liverpool an Andy Robertson ‘fix’
Dominik Szoboszlai stayed true to form during the international break and may have even given Liverpool a potential Andy Robertson solution with a slight formation twist.
He may look the same, he may run the same and he may hit the ball the same as well. But the Dominik Szoboszlai we see running around in a Hungarian shirt is a little bit different from what Liverpool fans are accustomed to at Anfield.
Naturally, he is the captain of his country, and the quality of the Hungarian national team is incomparable to the level of world-class talent Liverpool possesses. That means Szoboszlai often has to refine his game, cover more ground, and dictate the play even more than he has been doing for Liverpool.
On Saturday night, Liverpool’s number eight faced arguably his biggest challenge yet as captain, facing a strong Serbian side on home soil in front of a sell-out crowd.

Living up to the boisterous atmosphere Szoboszlai naturally thrived in that environment and delivered key contributions that helped Hungary triumph in the end. Liverpool.com was in attendance for the game. Here are three things we spotted.
Only the referee could stop him
Szoboszlai has stood out with his energy for Liverpool ever since he arrived at the club. But way before he came to Anfield, he’d been doing that same kind of pressing and covering large swathes of ground for the Hungarian national team.
Saturday night was no exception. The Hungarian ran his socks off, often covering for his teammates and bombing up and down the pitch until the very dying embers of the game.
Serbia struggled to contain him. The only time he was really stopped in his tracks is when he collided with the referee, who sent him sprawling to the ground as Hungary surged forward in the 67th minute.
An irate Szoboszlai thumped the ground in frustration but with Hungary having retained the ball and capable of mustering an attack the referee never blew his whistle. Instead, he offered an apology a few seconds later when the ball had gone out of play.
Taking goal kicks
When we say Szoboszlai was everywhere on the pitch for Hungary we mean it. He didn’t just cover ground in midfield he even diligently took goal kicks on a few occasions with Hungary trying to maximize his extreme kicking power.

It’s not an experiment we are likely to see at Liverpool anytime soon, especially with Alisson’s prowess at distribution and it didn’t really reap Hungary too many benefits either.
When Szoboszlai took the goal kicks, he was missed in the middle of the park or to get on the end of knock-downs to latch onto loose balls and instigate a new attack.
Andy Robertson solution offered
At times this season, Andy Robertson has struggled in defensive transitions to cover his left-back role and make it back in time to his rightful position. With Trent Alexander-Arnold inverting into midfield that’s been exposed even more acutely at times. But Szoboszlai could offer a solution based on his performance for Hungary on Saturday night.
While he covered most of the pitches, the Hungarian often popped up on the left side of midfield where he diligently covered for Hungary’s left wing-back, Milos Kerkez. When he bombed forward to join the attack, Szoboszlai was constantly slotting into the left-back position and making sure Hungary’s left flank was not left exposed.
For Liverpool this season, Szoboszlai has been mostly used in the right-sided midfield role but Jürgen Klopp did deploy him on the left in his first-ever game for Liverpool in pre-season. He switched across there when Curtis Jones was suspended for Brighton too.
Based on his showing against Serbia, playing him there again alongside Robertson could be an interesting experiment and one that could easily provide a solution to a lot of Liverpool’s vulnerabilities with the former Hull City star’s natural inclination being to bomb forward. Szoboszlai can do the running to get back in and plug the gap.

Liverpool’s most recent signing, Ryan Gravenberch, has expressed his admiration for one of his new teammates. Gravenberch, who joined the Reds from Bayern Munich on deadline day, has been impressed by one man’s ball-striking ability, describing it as “crazy”.
The 21-year-old midfielder is part of Jürgen Klopp’s revamped midfield, which also includes summer signings Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. Szoboszlai, 22, has made a significant impact since joining Liverpool, featuring in all of the team’s games this season and scoring two goals.
His stunning long-range strike against Leicester in the Carabao Cup was a standout moment. Gravenberch has praised Szoboszlai’s ability to excite Liverpool fans about the future.

“I think it was Dom Szoboszlai,” Gravenberch told Sky Sports when asked which player surprised him in training. “Because this guy’s shot is… it’s crazy! Also sometimes in training, sometimes we shoot after training and it’s like ‘one, two, three’, they go all in. Crazy things. So I think it’s Dom with his shot.”
After a challenging 2022/23 campaign that saw Liverpool miss out on Champions League qualification and fail to win a major trophy, the team is determined to bounce back.
Under Klopp’s guidance, they have shown significant improvement this season, currently sitting just three points behind Premier League leaders Tottenham in the title race. Liverpool has also performed well in Europe, winning both of its Europa League games and reaching the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Gravenberch also detailed how Klopp and Virgil van Dijk played influential roles in convincing him to join Liverpool. Van Dijk, who was appointed as the team’s captain during the summer, spoke highly of the club, assuring Gravenberch that he would have ample playing time. The midfielder, considered one of Europe’s most talented young players, revealed that Klopp’s plans and vision for the team were instrumental in his decision to move to Anfield.
Liverpool.com says: Gravenberch has made a really good start to life at Liverpool, just as Szoboszlai has. There have been very good signs in moments from Mac Allister as well.

ESPN pundit claims Jurgen Klopp is having to hide Liverpool player
Jordan Harris
Sun 15 October 2023 8:15, UK
ESPN pundit Alejandro Moreno has insisted that Trent Alexander-Arnold cannot be the most valuable player in the Liverpool squad as he believes that Jurgen Klopp has had to hide him to protect him defensively.
Moreno was speaking on ESPN after journalist Sam Tighe put the England international at number three in his own list of Liverpool’s most important players this season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold continues to divide a lot of opinion. Last season was a really tough one for the 25-year-old as he seemed to come in for an endless amount of criticism over his defensive frailties.
Trent Alexander-Arnold criticised again
He remains one of the very best passers of the ball. Speaking on his own YouTube channel, Ben Foster said that Alexander-Arnold was outrageous in Liverpool’s win over Aston Villa.
Photo by David Horton – CameraSport via Getty Images
That may help explain why Tighe put Alexander-Arnold at number three on the list behind Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker.
Moreno was clearly baffled by how high Alexander-Arnold found himself. And he insisted that there was no way that the academy graduate could be considered their third most valuable player.
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
“Here’s the thing about Trent: Jurgen Klopp has had to find a place for him on the field to hide him. So that defensively he doesn’t get exposed. If there’s a player that you have to hide on the field, then he cannot be your most valuable player,” he told ESPN.
“The reason that Trent Alexander-Arnold is not playing right-back for Liverpool is because he is horrendous defensively. So they’ve had to find a different way for him to play.”
Jurgen Klopp right to try and play to Liverpool star’s strengths
Moreno is extremely unfair on Alexander-Arnold in his comments. Yes, he is not the best defender. And some of the mistakes he made, particularly last season, would have led to many players being dropped a lot sooner.
However, he is absolutely world-class going forward. It is almost ridiculous to suggest that Jurgen Klopp is hiding Alexander-Arnold rather than working on a way to play to his strengths.
If he felt that he needed hiding, Klopp would not be working so hard to get him in the team. It would just be easier to drop him altogether.
It is no different to a manager moving a player around the attack to find their best spot. If there was a way to keep Alexander-Arnold in your team, why would you not do everything you could to make that happen?
