FA reveal Liverpool letters over Curtis Jones red card – ‘inappropriate’ use of VAR angry massage
Curtis Jones is currently serving a three-match ban after a yellow card at Tottenham was upgraded to a red after VAR intervention, which Liverpool argued was ‘inappropriate’.
Jones is one match into his three-game ban and will not return for domestic action until the trip to Bournemouth in the League Cup at the start of next month.
His challenge on Tottenham‘s Yves Bissouma was upgraded from a yellow card to a red after referee Simon Hooper was advised to consult the pitch-side monitor.
Hooper was instantly shown a freeze frame of the worst possible angle of Jones’ challenge, and Liverpool subsequently submitted an appeal.
The club’s argument was two-fold, as revealed by the FA.
First, the club submitted that Jones’ red should be rescinded due to the referee making an “obvious error,” with their next argument being that the “three game ban is ‘clearly excessive’.”
The commission presiding over the case were “unanimous in deciding the player clearly endangered the safety of his opponent” and that referee “had not made a clear and obvious error.”
But to Liverpool, and the Reds faithful, there were faults with the use of VAR, which the club said: “Was not appropriate and has pushed the referee to arrive at a decision which he should not have.”
Liverpool cited that there was “no ‘clear and obvious error’” with the initial on-field decision of a yellow card and reiterated that the technology is “not intended to re-referee” the match.
The panel “acknowledged” the argument but, unsurprisingly, moved on with the case, which was Liverpool’s argument that three games was an excessive ban.
Liverpool cited that Jones made “a genuine attempt to get the ball fairly,” there was no injury to Bissouma and that the club and player had already “suffered a significant impact” after playing over 70 minutes with 10 men and losing the match.
This, again, was rejected as “no truly exceptional circumstances existed within this case” – though, many fans will point to the lack of consistency after seeing Man City‘s Mateo Kovacic escape a red for a challenge worse than Jones’.
As for Jones’ view of the challenge, his statement said: “My sole intention was to touch the ball away from my opponent and into the path of my team mate, Luis Diaz who I could see to my left hand side.
“I did not consider myself as challenging an opponent for the ball as I felt I had possession of the ball and was trying to move the ball to stop my opponent gaining control.”

Uruguayan national media claim Darwin Nunez did something outrageous last night
Wed 18 October 2023 07:00
James Brooke
Darwin Nunez was once again the star of the show in a huge night for Uruguay yesterday.
Nunez has been in terrific form for club and country, heading into last night’s clash with Brazil brimming with confidence.
And according to Uruguayan paper El Observador, that showed, completely. The Liverpool striker reportedly cut a ‘determined’ figure as he took on the role of match-winner for his country.
‘Scorer of a great goal’ in the first-half – a lovely, stooping header – Darwin is said to have come out at ‘high speed’ for the second, before producing the game’s outstanding moment.
Taking the ball on the bounce virtually on the touchline by the six-yard box, Nunez somehow spun between three Brazil players to lay on a lovely assist for Nicolas De La Cruz.
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
El Obersvador call it a ‘shocking’ piece of play, and it really was something. Watching it back, you can see that Nunez’s flick to deceive all of Casemiro, Marquinhos and Gabriel was very deliberate, though. Outrageous.
His superb all-round display earned him an 8/10 from his national press, and gave Uruguay their first win over their hated neighbours for 22 years.
Nunez continues great form
If Nunez was in confident form already, then this should really kick him up another notch now.
For Uruguay, this is the game they really want to win. Having had a dismal run against Brazil for such a long time, Tuesday’s victory will have been celebrated into the night.
And right at the centre of it all was Liverpool’s No.9
Photo by EITAN ABRAMOVICH/AFP via Getty Images
After such a polarising start to his Reds career last year, it really is a delight to see Darwin now making so many people eat their words.
It’s still early days of course, and the season has a long way to run yet. But you get the feeling that the former Benfica man is potentially about to have a really memorable campaign.
After being handed Uruguay’s No.9 shirt by the legendary Luis Suarez, it could have gone one of two ways for Nunez. Either he stepped into Suarez’s enormous boots, or he failed to live up to his predecessor completely.
Thankfully, it looks like the former has happened. Watch out Everton, there’s a panther on the loose.

News – Liverpool will press to finally sign £34.5m star – Report
As per today’s version of Sport (news image provided below), Liverpool are willing to pay a ‘significant sum’ to sign Sane from the Bavarians.
The Catalan news source claim, Saudi club, Al-Ittihad failed with a bid worth 150 million euros in the summer to lure Salah but are expected to return next year.
The Egyptian superstar was only lured for a fee of 42 million euros from AS Roma in 2017 and the Reds hope to receive even a bigger offer from the Middle East sides in 2024.
Liverpool have set their sights on signing Sane on finally replace Salah at Anfield.
Last year, the Reds agreed a deal worth 100 million euros to sign Darwin Nunez from Benifca. Sport claim the Anfield side are now prepared to break the record to sign the German international
Sane made 135 appearances for Manchester City and directly contributed in 85 goals in all competitions under Pep Guardiola.
Since moving to Bayern, the £386,000 a week star (The Independent) has won the Bundesliga three years in a row and has regularly scored/created goals.
There is no doubt that Sane is a proven quality player but the question is, should Liverpool break their transfer record to sign a player who will turn 28 next in January 2024?

LIVERPOOLLiverpool remain keen on signing Khephren Thuramby JitOctober 16, 2023

Khéphren-Thuram
Liverpool are reportedly still interested in signing OGC Nice star Khephren Thuram in the upcoming transfer window, as per the Italian outlet Sport Mediaset.
Having endured a dire campaign last term, the Merseyside club opted to revamp their engine room this summer to challenge on all fronts. They have signed Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch after letting Naby Keita, Alex Olexlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho leave the club.
However, although the Reds have purchased four new midfielders, they were linked with numerous other options with Thuram being among them.
According to the report by Sport Mediaset, although the Merseyside club didn’t opt to make a concrete approach to sign Thuram last time around, they remain interested in acquiring his service and could formalise their interest next year.
Thuram to Liverpool
However, the report claims that securing the 22-year-old’s signature won’t be straightforward for Liverpool as Juventus are also eyeing a swoop for him.
It was suggested that Nice wanted at least £34m to let their star man leave this summer. But, it is likely that they could be forced to cash-in on Thuram for a cheaper deal at the end of this season if he doesn’t sign an extension as he will enter the final year of his current contract with the French side next summer. So, Liverpool can manage to secure his signature in a cut-price deal should they formalise their interest.
Thuram is dynamic, technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, works hard without possession and can contribute defensively as well.
So, the Frenchman, standing at around 6ft 3in tall, possesses the necessary attributes to play in Klopp’s system, therefore he would be a great coup for Liverpool if they manage to lure him to Anfield next year.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Liverpool eventually decide to formalise their interest in signing Thuram to beef up their engine room.
Meanwhile, after failing to win back-to-back games in the Premier League, Klopp’s side will return to action when they welcome city rivals Everton at Anfield after the international break. The Reds have been dominant over the Toffees in recent times and the Reds fans will be hoping that they will be able to continue their impressive form versus Everton in this fixture.

Journalist details Qatar’s Liverpool stance after Man Utd takeover collapse

Qatar reportedly still have money set aside for taking over a Premier League club amid rumours that Liverpool are on the Middle Eastern state’s agenda.
According to the Daily Mail’s Mikel Keegan, Qatar have set aside as much as $8bn (£6.5bn) to take over an English club, with news breaking recently that a deal to buy Manchester United had collapsed.
As a result, Liverpool could now be on Qatar’s radar, with the Arab state still eager to follow in Saudi Arabia’s footsteps and buy one of the Premier League’s most historic sides.

Keegan said: “What I know about is that they set aside $8bn for this project. That money is there and ready to go. It will be burning a hole in their pocket.
“What a story that would be, if they were that way inclined. From what I am led to believe they are very disappointed and angered at how this has played out.

Nation states getting involved with football is a worrying trend that’s showing no sign of slowing time, and Liverpool fans should be hoping that a Qatar takeover isn’t on the cards.
Whilst there is an appetite for new owners to come to replace FSG, few supporters will stand with a nation-state like Qatar buying Liverpool given their reported human rights abuses.
Indeed, Liverpool fans know that a change at the top is needed, yet with the situation not as desperate as United’s supporters need to ensure that they are against a Qatari bid.

‘I WOULD BE SURPRISED’: £200K-A-WEEK ARSENAL STAR NOW A DOUBT TO START AGAINST CHELSEA

Charles Watts says he doesn’t expect Thomas Partey to start for Arsenal against Chelsea when the Premier League returns this weekend.
There was a bit of a scare amongst Arsenal fans when Thomas Partey was subbed off at half-time during Ghana’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico.
But as Arsenal expert Charles Watts shared ‘panic over’ because it was all pre-planned by Ghana coach, Chris Hughton, as he told his own YouTube channel.
There is a reason why fans hate the international break. On one hand, it halts domestic football and, on the other, it puts their players at risk of injury and means that they travel back very late after duty.
Well, in Thomas Partey’s case, he will be in action for Ghana on Wednesday night against the USA in Nashville, which means a late trip back to London.
Mikel Arteta’s side travel to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea for the evening kick-off on Saturday and Watts doesn’t expect the £200k-a-week star to feature (Spotrac).
Ghana v Mexico

Thomas Partey injury update
“My understanding of Thomas Partey’s early withdrawal from Ghana’s game against Mexico at half-time was that it was a pre-determined thing,” said Watts.
“They were just trying to manage his minutes after being so long out with injury and Chris Hughton has now confirmed that speaking to the press following the game.
“So, panic over. No need to be concerned. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s very, very similar for Thomas Partey when they play on Wednesday night in Nashville against the USA. I can’t see Thomas Partey playing the full 90 minutes. It might be another 45-minute type of thing for him, which is wise and sensible. These are friendlies, not qualifiers.
“It’s still a long journey home for him. Wednesday night in America. Arsenal are playing on Saturday. I would be surprised if Partey starts that game against Chelsea.”

Partey yet to get going
It has been a stop-start season for the 30-year-old, who is yet to consistently play in his midfield role this season because of Declan Rice.
When Partey was fit, Arteta opted to use him as a right-back with the duo yet to start alongside each other.
The hope from the Arsenal fans is that they do play together as soon as possible because it will elevate the team even further.

£5m Arsenal player admits he’s trying so hard in training, wants to start more often
Milo Clay
Mon 16 October 2023 18:15, UK
Mohamed Elneny has admitted he’s been ‘fighting’ hard in training in an attempt to start more often at Arsenal.
Elneny has been speaking to The Evening Standard after returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines last month.
The 31-year-old picked up a serious knee injury in January that kept him out of action for the remainder of last season.
The Egyptian midfielder returned to action in the Carabao Cup last month as he came on for the final 10 minutes in the 1-0 win over Brentford.
And while Elneny is fully aware that it will take time for him to get back to full match fitness, he’s admitted he’s desperate to force his way into the Arsenal side.

Elneny admits he’s ‘fighting’ for starting role at Arsenal
Speaking to the Evening Standard, Elneny admitted his goal is to become a starter for Arsenal once again this season.
“I want to finish my career when I’m 37 or 36, so I still have five or six years left to go,” he said. “I’m working really hard like always and trying to go back into the first XI for Arsenal. For sure, it’s my goal this year.
“I know I’m coming back from a long injury and this is what I’m doing in the training ground; fighting, fighting and fighting to come back and be in the starting XI.
“That’s why I’m giving 100 per cent every day to show I’m ready to play and then when I get the chance to play, I have to show I can still be there and give my everything to this club.”
Photo by Stuart MacFarlane/Arsenal FC via Getty Images
Elneny had proven to be an important squad player for Arteta before picking up a serious injury last season.
The midfielder had stepped in several times in Thomas Partey’s absence but he now faces increased competition for a place in the side after the arrival of Declan Rice.
While it seems unlikely that Elneny will force his way into Arteta’s first XI anytime soon, it’s brilliant to have players who are ready to fight for their place.

Gary Neville aims FSG dig at Jamie Carragher after ex-Liverpool star mocked Man United takeover tweet
Gary Neville was not pleased after Manchester United’s Qatar takeover collapsed, but former Liverpool man Jamie Carragher saw the funny side

Gary Neville hit back at Jamie Carragher with a sly dig about Liverpool owners FSG after his fellow Sky Sports pundit made light of Manchester United’s failed takeover.
Over the weekend it became apparent the Reds’ fierce rivals would not come into contract with the Qatari riches of Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, as the businessman withdrew from the bidding process to take control of the Old Trafford outfit.
That was despite offering £5bn for the club back in May, with Rio Ferdinand making a poorly-aged statement that the deal was to be wrapped up quickly.
Now it appears the Glazer family will only part of United with a minority 25 percent stake going to English businessman Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

READ MORE: Liverpool may have midfield transfer problem if Sir Jim Ratcliffe seals Man United deal
These events prompted a response from former player and now Sky Sports pundit Neville, clearly unhappy that his old club would not be taken over entirely given his recent track record speaking against the current ownership.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, he published a long rant outlining six “non-negotiables” about a takeover, plus a further list of 16 questions to tackle worries about a new minority shareholder coming on board.
In due course Carragher, a regular on TV alongside his ex-United rival, rubbed salt in the wounds. He joked: “That para is my personal favourite, there’s a few other crackers as well,” screenshotting a section of the original post about Neville’s ‘non negotiables’.
Clearly a sensitive topic for Neville, he sharply clapped back at his co-pundit. “You can use it when you’re trying to kick your owners out in a few years,” was the last word in the public war of words.
Ownership is a subject both have clashed on at various stages dating back to when FSG announced they were exploring their options for investment 11 months ago. Around the same time Man United began their process to achieve a similar outcome.
John W. Henry then made it clear Liverpool were not for sale, culminating in a minority investment from Dynasty Equity at end of September. Whether this is the correct decision will be up for debate down the line, depending on the club’s on-field performance.
By this point Neville has taken Carragher on many a time, whether that be after Liverpool’s loss to Brentford in January live on air with Sky or again on X, there for all the world to see.

Tottenham Hotspur could be about to become one of the richest football clubs in world football.
While things go from strength to strength on the pitch for Ange Postecoglou and his newly-assembled Tottenham Hotspur teams, an influx of money off the pitch could help the club’s plight even further.
Currently the ninth most-valuable side in the world, according to Forbes, Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to receive a mega-money offer from Qatar – and it’s all thanks to the Glazers.

According to the Mirror, Sheikh Jassim could be set to reignite Qatar’s interest in investing in Tottenham Hotspur, after withdrawing his bid to buy 100 per cent of Manchester United last week.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos now set to purchase a 25 per cent stake in the Red Devils, Qatar have now turned their attention back to Tottenham. In January earlier this year, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the president of PSG and chairman of Qatar Sports Investments, reportedly met executive chairman of Tottenham Daniel Levy in a meeting that Spurs deny.
While the two parties couldn’t come to an agreement over a minority investment, Al-Khelaifi then played a role in Sheikh Jassim’s proposed bid to buy Manchester United. Sheikh Jassim consulted the PSG president’s advice over the club’s valuation, and could now do the same for Spurs.

The report highlights that Sheikh Jassim will lead a consortium aiming to take complete control of Tottenham Hotspur, similar to QSI’s 100 per cent ownership of PSG.
It is worth noting, however, that while QSI is a subsidiary of Qatar Investment Authority, the state-run sovereign-wealth fund in Qatar, Sheikh Jassim is not directly connected to Al-Khelaifi’s ventures. Both parties would clearly have mutual interests, though.
Regardless, with Sheikh Jassim tabling an offer of £5bn to buy Manchester United, the Qatari businessman clearly has the funds to finance a project at a club as widely-respected as Spurs.

Tottenham ‘discover’ whether sponsorship deal will be ripped up after Man Utd buy-out
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s petrochemicals company has a multi-year agreement with Manchester United’s top-four rivals.

Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou said he has never been a fan of VAR after their 2-1 win over Liverpool
Tottenham are set to maintain their affiliation with petrochemicals firm INEOS, according to reports, despite company owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe closing in on the Manchester United boardroom. The two sides could be in direct competition this season, with Ange Postecoglou and Erik ten Hag each chasing down a top-four finish.

INEOS struck a lucrative multi-year sponsorship deal with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy late last year, shortly after the Glazers announced that they were exploring strategic alternatives to their current Man Utd ownership model.
Sir Jim’s company branding can be seen in various locations around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, including in the dugout. Furthermore, players have taken part in corporate videos to promote the INEOS Grenadier 4×4 offroad vehicle.
Even so, The Telegraph claim that INEOS have no plans to scrap the agreement with Tottenham, and it will have no effect on whether the proposed Man Utd buy-out goes ahead.

A boardroom vote is reportedly scheduled later this week to determine whether Sir Jim is welcomed into the fold at Old Trafford. The boyhood United fan finally convinced the Glazers to do business by proposing a 25-per-cent shareholding, leaving the Americans in control.
Despite heading towards Red Devils ownership in a minority capacity only, Sir Jim is reportedly keen to establish a measure of control over sporting decisions. A thorough assessment of the squad and staff is therefore on the horizon, although Ten Hag’s job is presumed safe.

As for Tottenham, Postecoglou put the funds from INEOS’ sponsorship agreement to good use during the summer. That much is evidenced by their dizzying league position, with Spurs sitting top of the table during the international break.
Micky van de Ven has been a star turn at centre-back, while James Maddison is one of the Premier League’s in-form players. Postecoglou will hope that the two-week hiatus has not ruined his side’s momentum when they welcome Fulham next Monday night.

On Maddison’s red-hot start, the Tottenham boss told TNT Sports: “For me, having players like that in your team can make you an effective attacking force. The unpredictability in his play, and he is always looking for the passes and the runs that maybe others don’t. He will always provoke rather than play safe and with the first few weeks with us, you’ve seen that already.
“Irrespective of how our opposition set up, he’s constantly looking at areas and ways to provoke the opposition and to try and hurt the opposition. For us he gives us that extra strength when we’re going forward.”

Kyle Walker now gives his honest reaction to Liverpool’s recent VAR farce
Tue 17 October 2023 07:00
James Brooke
Manchester City defender Kyle Walker has given his take on the VAR decision which robbed Liverpool of a goal against Tottenham Hotspur.
By now, we all know the story. Luis Diaz ran through to open the scoring for 10-man Liverpool against Spurs in September, only for VAR to incorrectly communicate an offside call.
The incident has created much debate in the football world, with City man Walker the latest to weigh in. Speaking via Manchester Evening News, the 33-year-old admitted that he has mixed views on VAR.
Kyle Walker
“I like it when it helps us out and I don’t like it when it doesn’t help us out!” said the former Tottenham player.
“Sometimes it does take away the talk about football when you’re talking with your mates about whether it was a goal or if it was offside, so it does take that out of it. Sometimes that does make it not go well.”
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Commenting on the Diaz decision specifically, Walker suggested that two weeks on, the matter should now be closed.
“They’ve come out and said sorry to Liverpool about that,” he added. “It’s football, it’s going to be opinions about who’s right and who’s wrong.”
Walker misses the point
What Walker seems to be missing here is that this was not ‘about who’s right and who’s wrong’ at all. Perhaps he missed the incident in question.
For the Diaz non-goal, there was no other opinion to be had at all: it was onside, that was the whole reason for the controversy.
Nevertheless, the appetite for Liverpool to do something meaningful about the debacle seems to have dissipated.
Kyle Walker
Just as these things usually do, it has faded into the background as the game ticks on and on.
That’s all well and good, and it’s no use getting bogged down in the injustice of the situation. But what about when this simply happens again? It may not be Liverpool on the wrong end of it, but that’s not the point.
Indeed, VAR almost caused another scandal just a few days on from their mess at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. During Burnley’s game against Chelsea the weekend after, Raheem Sterling’s dubious goal hadn’t been fully checked before the referee restarted the game.
Luckily, the decision of ‘onside’ was the right one and the officials got away with it. But it won’t be long before this happens again. As Walker says, we all like it when the decision goes for us, but let’s hear his thoughts when City get one illegitimately taken away themselves.

Liverpool are prepared to pay a huge sum to sign Leroy Sane from Bayern Munich to eventually replace Mohamed Salah.
Multiple sources in the media have covered the story and today, a renowned Spanish source have shed light on the rumor.
