The Premier League could decide to replay Tottenham Hotspur’s game with Liverpool – if an appointed commission rules that the match officials breached the Laws of the game when it came to ruling out Luis Diaz’s goal.

Audio of the incident will be released soon by referees’ body PGMOL, who are striving to be as transparent as possible following Saturday evening’s embarrassing howler, but only after Liverpool have been allowed to assess what communication took place between the ref Simon Hooper, the VAR Darren England and his assistant Dan Cook.

Both England and Cook have been sidelined by PGMOL but Hooper acted as fourth official in Monday night’s game between Fulham and Chelsea, indicating that he has been exonerated from blame.

The Reds have not called for the game to be replayed but a carefully-worded statement said they would “explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution.”

That, according to experts, suggests they have already sought legal advice and should they end up lobbying for the match to be replayed after digesting the audio, there is a pathway for that to happen.

Stephen Taylor Heath, co-head of Sports Law at JMW Solicitors, told Mirror Football: “Rule L18 outlines that the Premier League board has the power to order a league match to be replayed provided that recommendation to that effect has been made by a commission under rule W51.

“In addition to this, under rule W1, the Premier League’s board has the power to inquire about any suspected breach of rules, including those made by a match official, while rule N4 ensures that each match official agrees to be bound by the laws of the game as well as any protocols and FA rules.

“There is therefore a possibility that Liverpool could lobby the Premier League board to convene a commission which would have the power, among others, to order the match to be replayed.

“To mount a general legal case outside of the Premier League regulations, a starting point would normally have to be to establish a contractual nexus between the club and the officials that has been breached or a duty of care and negligence causing loss.”

Yet it would be legally difficult for Liverpool to argue that they lost points in the circumstances – and it would not be until the end of the campaign that the possible impact of the officials’ mistake can be fully assessed.

Taylor Heath added: “While it has been established sports participants owe a duty of care to each other – such as personal injury – it would be very difficult for Liverpool to establish that the error itself cost them points in a legal sense given the infinite scenarios that could have arisen had the goal stood – for example, it is not the same as a horse race where the error is as to the winner at the end of a race.

“It is also worth noting that Liverpool can only really assess the potential impact of this decision come the end of the season.”

Man City boss Pep Guardiola has shared his sympathy with Liverpool after the Reds had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside in their loss to Tottenham on Saturday.

Finishing the game with nine men in an encounter littered with controversial officiating decisions, Luis Diaz thought he had opened the scoring in the first half only for it to be disallowed by the on-field officials. VAR did not intervene, thinking a goal had been awarded, with the PGMOL later admitting a ‘significant human error’ had been made.

Since Saturday, Liverpool have released an explosive statement demanding transparency and change, and received the match officials’ audio from their loss to Tottenham following an official request to PGMOL.

But as the fallout from Saturday’s game continues, Guardiola has weighed in on the debate after being asked for his thoughts on VAR ahead of Man City’s Champions League clash with RB Leipzig.

“It changed the job of the referees because now they don’t make the decisions, it goes to the VAR,” he told reporters. “I understand the feeling of Liverpool but the bosses of the referees will decide.

“No (I don’t have any ideas how to improve it). I’m not a professional in that to apply it as best as possible. I’m not involved in that and I don’t care.

“We have to rely on the people there. Everyone knows they did a mistake and Liverpool suffered a big consequence of that cause in these games is super important.

“They will have to find a system where the main roles are the players and the game itself. In all the countries, not just here. The referees and the VARs are the leading roles. And the Oscar goes to… they have to make a step back. It’s the players.

“Some games, be more humble and leave the players to do what they have to do, and they will be better. They will be better.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has spoken to the media ahead of Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash against RB Leipzig.

The treble-winners travel to east Germany to play Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in matchday two of the UEFA Champions League Group Stages, and face a familiar opponent in Marco Rose’s side in midweek.

Manchester City thumped RB Leipzig 8-1 on aggregate in the last-16 of the competition in March, as Erling Haaland scored a record-equalling five goals during the second-leg of the tie at the Etihad Stadium.

Both Manchester City and RB Leipzig won on the opening matchday last month, with the Sky Blues coming from behind to beat Red Star Belgrade 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez and Rodri.

Guardiola’s side could move three points clear at the top of Group G with a victory at the Red Bull Arena, and have been boosted by John Stones and Bernardo Silva returning to first-team training ahead of the fixture.

Josko Gvardiol could feature against his former club this week following his move to England during the summer, as Manchester City look to bounce back from underwhelming back-to-back losses, against Newcastle United and Wolves.

Here is every word from the boss ahead of the Wednesday’s Champions League clash against RB Leipzig.

On Francis Lee

“Part of what we are. It looks like the reality, the day by day, it looks like only exists the people who are here – but we are here for people like Franny Lee, Mike Summerbee, Colin Bell, part of the generation of that created a part of this organisation, this club. On behalf of the team, of course there was the statement of the club, but to his wife and all the family a huge hug.”

On disruption to Manchester City’s travel plans

“It’s no problem. It’s fly safe and land safe, that’s the important thing. It’s not at 7pm, you have to do it at 9pm and it’s not a problem. The authorities said it was so risky to fly before so that’s why we made the training session longer and the lunch longer. We have time to rest and now we are going to fly to Germany.”

On whether last season’s 7-0 win vs RB Leipzig will have any impact

“And we draw 1-1 there. It’s another game, another competition. It was a really good game for us, we had an incredible run at home we had a feeling in our bones, we wanted to make the final again and we did it. Now is the group stage, it’s completely different. They are doing really good things, how they attack the space, we try to go there cause it’s a huge step for us if we get a result to get to the next round.”

On John Stones and Bernardo Silva

“They feel better. Bernardo better than John. Both travel, we decide tomorrow. Really happy they’re back. John not played one minute this season, Bernardo had injury and the birth of his beautiful baby daughter but they’re back and it’s good news for us.”

On Erling Haaland’s recent struggles

“He had a lot of chances to score the goals. It gets more difficult with five defenders, on the 18 yard box, there but not just for him for any player around the world. If you see the chances he’s had and the goals he’s scored, he’s at the same level as last season.”

On Manchester City’s run of away games

“It is what it is. Many away, then many at home. The calendar dictates the draw and we adapt.”

On VAR

“It changed the job of the referees because now they don’t make the decisions, it goes to the VAR. I understand the feeling of Liverpool but the bosses of the referees will decide.”

On whether he has any ideas as to how to improve VAR

On the defeat to Wolves

“I don’t know what’s going to happen this season. What the players have done is unbelievable. We conceded two shots on target and we lost the game, that’s football. We have to improve yeah, the bases of what we did last season was (John) Stones, Rodri, Bernardo (Silva, (Kevin) De Bruyne, (Ilkay) Gundogan, (Jack) Grealish and they weren’t there. Sometimes you have to adjust something, it’s normal.

“Mateo (Kovacic), Julian (Alvarez) have been amazing, I could not expect much more from Mateo this early, Jeremy (Doku). But there are some players who know exactly what they have to do because they’ve been here seven years together, I breathe and they know what to do, some don’t. It will take games and games for them to.

“Now we have to move forward Leipzig, then away to Arsenal. We’re not going to win the Premier League at Wolves or lose it. We’ve behind many times. Get back to our principles, learn from the game. I’m more than pleased at what they’ve done so far and you have to move on.”

On whether Rodri will play against RB Leipzig

“Of course. You always have to take the positive and Rodri’s going to play tomorrow and then I’ll give him a rest for the Maldives for a few days before joining the national team.”

On changes to the Champions League and the addition of more games

“Apparently yeah. The format of the Champions League, they’re changing, but I don’t know the disadvantage if you reach the quarters or the semis. There are more teams but I don’t know how many more games. 15 or 17 matches. Two more or three more is like one month… we say quality and quantity. Exhausted? Go and play the Club World Cup in the States. You finish the season two weeks later. And maybe we’ll have some international games! It’s the same argument.

“The managers who play in Europe say it. They made the competitions. Have they spoken to the players? Captains of big clubs? Managers of big clubs? I read the newspapers and say, ‘Oh, there will be more games’. You ask me and I answer. Is me answering going to change anything? No.

“In Spain, (Carlo) Ancelotti is saying the same, In Italy, (Maurizio) Sarri the same. We don’t have time to analyse what we’re doing. I’m a manager but I’m not a trainer. I don’t do training with the team. You think we give Mateo (Kovacic) or Jeremy (Doku) time to understand what we do?

“Good food needs time to cook. Microwave is not the same. Everything is so quick. It’s all more difficult because the demand is higher. The demand is from chairmans, bosses, media, fans, they want more and more – do better – and the day we were out, the question was are we disappointed not to win the Quadruple? Are you serious? Everything is too much. We’ll play the competitions. It’s what I said the other day: only the players can stop it.”

On the success of RB Leipzig and the Red Bull group

“Normally when things happen there’s two or three reasons. The board know they how they want to play, the manager plays that way and players are signed for that way. At Leipzig, Salzburg and many teams in Red Bull they know for many many years it doesn’t matter after all the managers they play the style.

“They develop players and sell to become one of the richest clubs in the world. That is the reason why they’re a success because they have a clear strategy and all three departments are pulling in the same direction.

“They win the Pokal, always in the Champions League, the battle with Bayern (Munich) is difficult but they’re always there. I have huge admiration for that and try to do the same at (Manchester) City.”

On the impact of Josko Gvardiol at Manchester City

“He’s not had time to train much with us but we’re really impressed. He can play at centre-back, left-back, midfield. The impact with us is massive. We’re really impressed with him on and off the pitch and I’m very pleased Manchester City have done what they’ve done with him.”

Former Tottenham and England defender Graham Roberts is calling for people to ‘move on’ from the controversial incidents in Spurs’ victory over Liverpool last Saturday.

The game in north London was overshadowed by the officials on VAR failing to overturn the erroneous on-field offside call which saw Luis Diaz deprived of a perfectly fair goal which would’ve given the Reds a 1-0 lead in a match they lost 2-1.

The Merseyside club duly issued a statement which suggested that ‘sporting integrity’ had been ‘undermined’ by the referees’ failings, and that they intend to ‘explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution’.

However, while Roberts – seemingly misinterpreting that as Liverpool asking for a replay – admitted the goal should’ve stood, he otherwise had little sympathy for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who had two players sent off.

The 64-year-old posted on X: “I’ve been listening to Sky Sports News, am I going mad? Yes the refs mucked up on Saturday re the goal, the sending offs were right, now they saying we should replay the match. JOKE.

“Should Man Utd v Wolves get replayed when Wolves didn’t get [a] penalty? Everybody needs to move on”.

As a former Tottenham player, Roberts will naturally be biased towards the club, and one would highly doubt that he’d be pleading for everyone to ‘move on’ if the VAR farce which transpired on Saturday happened the other way around.

It’s this shoulder-shrugging ‘it happens’ mentality which facilitates weekly eruptions over refereeing controversies in the Premier League, and every club has been affected by it in recent weeks and months.

If the authorities simply moved on from the weekend’s mess and failed to take steps towards preventing a repeat occurrence, it’d be negligence of the highest order. In fact, it’d arguably be an admission that they’re happy for clubs to be messed about by inexcusable errors which are the fault of others.

Also, even if Roberts interpreted the reports he saw as Liverpool asking for a replay, one look at the club’s statement would be enough to determine that that particular word wasn’t mentioned once by LFC.

They’re not begging for replays or points to be restored, but rather a deeper discussion towards improving the standards of officiating and VAR usage for the benefit of every stakeholder involved.

This saga is far from over, not until necessary lessons have evidently been learned.

Two officials at the centre of the VAR storm in Tottenham’s win over Liverpool have been stood down for another round of Premier League fixtures.

VAR officials Darren England and Dan Cook were initially replaced for two games after Luis Diaz’s goal was wrongly chalked off last Saturday but have now been banished for an extra round of fixtures.

Referees’ body PGMOL have come under increasing scrutiny following a host of wrong calls often leading to public apologies.

Diaz’s strike – which would have seen Liverpool take a 2-0 lead – was another contentious decision in a game the Reds went on to lose 2-1.

PGMOL announced they will conduct a full review into Saturday’s events after releasing a statement shortly after the game claiming ‘significant human error’ was the reason behind the decision to disallow Diaz’s goal.

Liverpool later responded saying “sporting integrity has been undermined” by the VAR mistake and asked for the referee’s audio to be released to gain an understanding of why the decision was made.

The club also said they will ‘explore the full range of options’ available ‘to find a suitable resolution.

England’s next assignment was to officiate Leicester City’s Championship clash with Preston on Wednesday but will now be replaced by Thomas Bramall.

Ben Foster has hit out at both the VAR officials, PGMOL and Sky for not performing due diligence in regard to Luis Diaz’s goal being chalked off against Tottenham Hotspur. The goalkeeper, formerly of Manchester United, was not best pleased – like the majority of fans – with the decision and has made his feelings known.

Liverpool winger Diaz put the ball in the back of the net in the first half of the highly anticipated affair but referee Simon Hooper wrongly called the goal off as he deemed the Colombian to be in an offside position. A worryingly quick check with those operating VAR deemed the on-field decision – made by Hooper – as being correct, though shortly Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) were on hand to act quickly.

Shortly after the final whistle, they released an apologetic statement, claiming that “significant human error” was the reason behind the poor decision-making on show. The Stockley Park personnel, headed by Darren England, were under the impression the decision was that the goal had been given and, therefore, waved play on without further inspection.

As a result, VAR official England and his assistant (at the time of the incident) Dan Cook were relieved of their duties against Nottingham Forest vs Brentford and Fulham vs Chelsea, respectively.

Ben Foster’s response to Sky and PGMOL controversy – ‘VAR is a disgrace’
Now, Foster has made a scathing assessment of Sky and VAR’s relationship and has claimed that the two parties would have conversed in order to keep the controversy under wraps.

While dubious VAR decisions are often the topic of conversation during the half-time break, those on the panel during Liverpool vs Tottenham kept relatively coy about the situation as if they were ordered not to comment on the inexcusable mistake – and this irked Foster into making a public statement.

“The bit that I found really disappointing about this Luis Diaz goal is that they never showed a replay of it. Well, they showed one, didn’t they? They showed one very quick replay as soon as it had happened, and the game was moved on already.” the 40-year-old stopper said. “It’s like the game was already restarting, and I’m thinking ‘Well, that was quick, they must be double sure’. And every image we saw, we though ‘That’s onside, that looks onside.’

“They didn’t show another replay for the rest of the first half and then at half-time, they didn’t talk about it not once until 10 seconds before the start of the second half. That tells me that Sky are in bed with the people at VAR. They’re in bed with them because they must have got straight on the phone and said ‘Do not highlight the face that we cocked up here, do not show it. Do not talk about. Do not bad mouth us.’ I guarantee you that is what’s happened. So that’s why Sky were under direct orders to not say a single word about it.”

Co-host and Manchester United fan Mark Goldbridge also added to Foster’s claim saying that is commonplace in mainstream media and that fans will not be deceived by such poor decisions, both on-field and via video technology.

“But it does happen. I mean, we’ve all operated in mainstream media and that is what has happened. And this is the problem as it’s a dictatorship and the fans are the lifeblood of football. We’re not stupid, we’re like ‘Where’s the replay? Where’s the replay? Where’s the replay?’ and they’re not showing it,” Goldbridge said. “Is it because they think we’re going to forget? It’s like you’re absolute idiots, we’re not going to forget. Own it and own it quick!”

This Tottenham and Liverpool VAR drama seems to be never-ending!

That Luis Diaz goal that didn’t stand still continues to hit the headlines on Tuesday and the media, nor Liverpool, will probably stop until they get clear answers – the player himself has posted a two-word message on Instagram amid that drama.

But as Tottenham legend Graham Roberts switched on Sky Sports, he couldn’t believe what he was hearing because there seems to be suggestions by some that the weekend encounter should be ‘replayed’.

That has left Graham Roberts pulling out his hair, as he stated on Twitter ‘Am I going mad?’, as he urged all parties involved to ‘move on’.

Well, it’s pretty obvious that Liverpool won’t be doing that because they want answers and, firstly, in the form of the VAR recordings of that Luis Diaz decison being shared with the public.

But, in the meantime, a lot is being said of this matter and you assume it’s going to even swim its way into this weekend’s action.

“I’ve been listening to Sky Sports News, am I going mad,” said Roberts. “Yes, the refs mucked up on Saturday, re the goal.

“The sending-offs were right. Now they (are) saying we should replay the match JOKE. Should Man Utd v Wolves get replayed when Wolves didn’t get a penalty? Everybody needs to move on.”

A replay would never happen
It’s utterly daft for anyone to suggest that a replay is on the cards because that would just open a can of worms.

Every team up and down the land would then pipe up and want certain games replayed. Everyone has been in the position Liverpool finds themselves in now.

This fallout will just continue and continue until the conversation between those in the VAR hotseat and the on-field referee is released.

That way fans can, for themselves, judge how it all unfolded.

‘Incredible’ Liverpool youngster now ranked as one of the world’s best prospects

Liverpool winger Ben Doak has been named as one of the best youth prospects in the world for the upcoming season.

Scouted Football released their Scouted50 list yesterday which has identified 50 wonderkids to watch over the next year.

Liverpool have a habit of developing some exceptional talent, with current vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold the perfect example.

The intrepid right-back is one of England’s most impressive technical players and the fact there are debates over whether he should be playing in defence or midfield shows how capable he is in possession.

Liverpool also have a knack for identifying some of the best young talent from around the world.

They’ve raided Fulham in recent years to sign Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho, although the young Portuguese has failed to make an impact at Anfield yet.

Liverpool also spotted that Ben Doak was one of the best prospects at Celtic and acted quickly to sign him last March for £600,000.

Now, he’s among some of the best wonderkids in the world and ranked ahead of players such as Brighton’s Carlos Baleba who cost £23m this summer.

The ‘incredible’ winger is already featuring for the first team and this season’s Europa League could be the perfect opportunity to showcase his talents.

Liverpool star Doak named one of world’s best prospects
Doak has been ranked 15th among Scouted Football’s best youngsters, with Brighton star Evan Ferguson at the top of the list.

They tend to overlook some of the most obvious wonderkids in the world with the likes of Jude Bellingham unlikely to feature, although his younger brother Jobe is included.

When commenting on Doak, they say: “If you’re of a Liverpool and or Scottish persuasion, you should be very excited about Ben Doak.

“There’s every reason to expect that he’s Liverpool’s replacement for Mohamed Salah not only in the long run but for this season too.”

Liverpool are going to have to address how they replace Mohamed Salah sooner rather than later.

Jarrod Bowen has been linked but Doak is the prospect at Liverpool that has the best chance of stepping up into that role.

He’s been likened to Arjen Robben by one Liverpool coach which is a very flattering comparison.

If he can cut inside and score from the right like the legendary Dutchman then he’ll be a very popular player at Anfield in the future.
