Premier League edges closer to extra Champions League spot

That’s a great news for Premier League clubs

The Premier League is getting closer to securing an extra Champions League spot, thanks to recent developments in Belgium.

This season, the English top-flight has four teams in the Champions League. However, the race for the top four might expand to the top five. Belgian club Club Brugge recently beat Osasuna 4-3 in a UEFA Conference League play-off, benefiting English clubs.

ADVERTISMENT
Starting from the 2024/25 season, the Champions League will be expanded, adopting a league format. Four additional teams will be included, and two of these spots will be awarded based on the “country coefficient” chart each season.

England is well-positioned to secure one of these additional spots, thanks to the strong performances of clubs like Manchester City and West Ham in last season’s European competitions.

The country coefficient considers performance in all three European club tournaments and assigns bonus points. The final figure is then divided by the number of clubs each nation has representing them in Europe. In six of the last seven seasons, England would have earned an extra spot, indicating a positive outlook.

Spain’s chances are slim, leaving Italy and Germany to compete with England. This season’s Champions League is the last under the traditional format, with a new league format starting next term.

Teams will play eight games against seeded opponents in the first phase. The top eight reach the knockout stages, and teams from ninth to twenty fourth will participate in a play-off to determine additional spots. Exciting changes await European club football.

Pep Guardiola says £77m Man City star can actually do something rare not many players can

Pep Guardiola has claimed that Manchester City have a player who possesses quite a rare trait in his game.

Upon first reflection, Guardiola’s comments can be attributed to several players in their squad, who have their own one-of-a-kind assets.

For instance, is there any attacker in the Premier League as proficient across a range of roles such as Phil Foden is?

It is tough to name too many.

Similarly, there are not many full-backs in world football who are as synonymous with keeping wingers quiet as Kyle Walker is, with only Aaron Wan-Bissaka known for having a similar reputation.

Not many other strikers under the age of 25 have dominated two of Europe’s top five leagues in the same vein as Erling Haaland has.

Guardiola says Man City star has a trait that is “difficult to find”
There are not many central midfielders in Europe, perhaps apart from Frenkie de Jong who can carry the ball over large distances like Mateo Kovacic does.

As for being able to play every position across the backline to a high level, not many defenders can do so like Manuel Akanji.

The list goes on for Manchester City players.

The treble-winners have built of squad of players who have irreplicable skills, which makes them such a challenge to beat.

Whether it be in a title race, a two-legged knockout tie or a potential fit.

In their latest outing, the Sky Blues thrashed Luton Town 5-1 on Saturday.

As Josko Gvardiol scored a peach of a goal with his right foot, Pep Guardiola emphasised how much of a rare characteristic the mastery with his weak foot was.

“It’s difficult to find, the left footers, they don’t use their right feet much and he’s really good with the right. He’s more comfortable with the right and the left. And yeah, he scored a good goal in Madrid, today, again in the first half, he had a chance and is now another threat we have in the final third”, he said about the £77.6 million man [via HaytersTV].

“So, he receives in central positions when the wingers come, two or three players to make two against one, three against one against [Jeremy] Doku, Jack [Grealish] or whatever, he’s free and close to goal, have an incredible talent so I encourage him to try it again and again.”

Pep Guardiola makes a fair point about Josko Gvardiol
If there were any suspicions that the screamer from Josko Gvardiol against Real Madrid was a fluke, his strike against Luton and the post-match assessment from Pep Guardiola is proof that he has a seriously good weak foot.

As Guardiola stated, left-footed players tend to use their right foot as merely a standing leg.

Names like Arjen Robben, Bernardo Silva, Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria spring to mind.

However, Gvardiol has shown that he also has a wand of a right peg on him, which is perhaps why Guardiola has given him the freedom to take shots from outside the box by putting this trait to use.

The 22-year-old’s unique asset is helping City to say the least.

Man City agree personal terms with “elegant” £150,000-a-week target

The Cityzens have made a breakthrough.

pep-guardiola-man-city-premier-league
Manchester City were held to a thrilling 3-3 draw against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League tie in Spain on Tuesday night.

The Cityzens are still competing to land the treble for the second season in succession, as they eye the Premier League and the FA Cup alongside Europe’s major prize.

Despite their continued success on the pitch, Pep Guardiola’s side are already looking at possible targets to improve their playing squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.

City are reportedly eyeing up a swoop to sign a current Premier League star to bolster the Spanish manager’s options in the middle of the park.

Man City agree personal terms with Premier League magician
According to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna, Manchester City have now reached an agreement on personal terms with West Ham United star Lucas Paqueta.

The reporter claims that the Cityzens have ironed out a long-term contract, including the exact duration of the deal and the salary included, with the Brazil international ahead of the summer.

However, Aouna adds that there have not been any talks between the two clubs at this moment in time, which means that a fee has not been agreed.

The post states that Paqueta’s agents are now expecting City and the Hammers to hold negotiations over a deal for the Brazilian wizard at the end of the season, although it does not reveal how much the London-based outfit are set to demand for their star performer.

An agreement on personal terms with the former Lyon maestro does, however, indicate that they already have the green light on the player’s side, which could play into their hands in transfer talks.

West Ham would then know that they have someone who wants to move on this summer, and they may not want to keep an unhappy and unsettled player if City offer a significant fee to secure his services.

Lucas Paqueta’s Premier League form
With his combative and creative performances, the 26-year-old whiz has showcased his quality as an all-round midfielder in the Premier League for the Hammers this season.

Paqueta currently ranks within the top 6% of attacking midfielders in the division for tackles (2.60) per 90, and the top 11% for interceptions (0.77) per 90, which speaks to how hard he works out of possession to win the ball back for his team.

As you can see in the table above, the £150k-per-week star has also provided attacking quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals from midfield.

Paqueta, who has been described as “elegant” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, ranks within the top 7% of Premier League attacking midfielders for progressive passes (6.53) per 90 this season, which shows that he is constantly looking to play forward and progress play for his team.

Meanwhile, Matheus Nunes ranks within the bottom 45% of midfielders in the division with 4.14 progressive passes for City, and has produced zero goals and two assists in 15 games.

This suggests that the potential is there for Paqueta to arrive as an upgrade on Nunes as a rotation option for Guardiola in midfield, which may be why he has been targeted ahead of the summer window.

Foden sidelined for up to four weeks with foot injury

Foden will miss City’s start to the season. AFP
Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden is set to miss the first month of the Premier League season due to a foot injury he sustained at Euro 2020.

The 21-year-old missed England’s final defeat to Italy due to the problem and is unlikely to feature before September’s international break. City open their Premier League defence away to Tottenham on Sunday with Foden also set to miss clashes against Norwich and Arsenal.

“It is still a little bit sore,” Foden told Sky Sports. “It was such a shame to do it just before the Euro final. It was really unfortunate but I am working hard in the gym and hopefully I can get back as soon as possible. I would say it will be around three to four weeks. Hopefully it flies by and I can just get back on the pitch.”

Foden’s injury will means he will have to wait to line up alongside international teammate Jack Grealish, who became the first ever £100 million English player last week after sealing a move from Aston Villa.

“I am really happy he has signed here and hopefully I can just get back playing with him and enjoy my football,” added Foden. “He’s fearless on the ball and can change a game on his own. He’s a really special player for us and he’s going to be key for us.”

City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne is also set to miss the start of the Premier League season with the ankle ligament injury he sustained on international duty with Belgium at Euro 2020.

VIDEO: Xabi Alonso says Leverkusen’s main focus is on West Ham

Leverkusen are unbeaten in 41 matches this season. DUGOUT
Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso did not want to talk about the possible early championship win at the weekend on his press conference ahead of the quarter-final against West Ham United and stressed that all the focus was on the Europa League game.

Bayer Leverkusen head into Thursday’s home first leg against West Ham in the Europa League quarter-finals unbeaten in 41 matches this season, with 36 wins and five draws.

Despite having his side on course for a first Bundesliga title alongside qualifying for the German Cup final, Alonso said his team’s good work would come to nought in Europe should they fail to beat West Ham.

“The Europa League is just two legs. It’s make or break. We want to give ourselves a good starting point for the second leg in London next week. It won’t be easy because West Ham have a fantastic team, but these are exactly the games we look forward to. We want to test ourselves against top teams,” he told reporters on Wednesday.
